The common “Box 1” pattern is a place where a lot of great music is made… so I don’t mean to knock it at all…

But sometimes, you feel like you want to get up and out and it’s helpful to have some licks in your back pocket that will “escape” the pattern that you’re in right now.

Getting from Box 1 up to Box 2 using this move is something you should absolutely have in your bag of tricks as you’ll use it A LOT.

Is there a lesson or drill to move up and down the neck to connect all the boxes. Would love a drill on that.

I figured out that slide technique back in the 80’s, but I had no idea what I was doing at the time. I discovered it trying to play along with different songs. I also figured out the slide down at the lower end of box one as well. But again, I had no idea what I was doing. I didn’t even know what a pentatonic scale was back then, let alone what box one or box two was. I just knew that I could connect the patterns with a slide and continue on with the proper notes.

Is anybody else not receiving the audio portion of this video?
All of my phone settings are good.

A lesson on tone is a great request. I hope you can make one or provide a link if you’ve already recorded such a video.
      Thanks so much, Griff.

Please add tab to these great licks!

    • Dennis

Love it! Wish you had a ‘simpleton’ course on, say Box 1, or some very limited area, where simple guys like me, that just want to play a ‘little’, at my age (72), and sound good, without having to really ‘get good at blues’ as a genre. Just get good at a small piece of real estate on the fretboard. Basic limited proficiency!:-) You’re the BEST!!

Try Griff’s 4 note solo! Doesn’t get much easier than that!.
I believe he’s got a download for that.

    • Mike

Thank you Griff, for another great lesson.

    • Lynne

Thanks for another great lesson especially the counting . Could you please post the tabs

      • HHaHaHarry

Lynne, hit full screen on the video and screen shot the part where the tab is displayed at the foot of the screen should do the trick.

One comment that you casually made about closing your eyes hit home with me. I don’t do that nearly enough and I’m certain it hurts my ability to take my playing to the next level. Thanks for the video and the quick lesson.

    • Rod

      Griff thanks for great lesson

    • Ken

Your vibrato control is as good as any I have seen. I would like to go on record as
noting I had to PRINT OUT MY OWN FRETBOARD to copy the tab! OH, The Humanity!!
These kids today…I tell you…If some of Today’s Youth were to win a lottery check they
would say:”Just roll me over and put it in my pocket!” YEP! Great Stuff, Griff.

    • John

is there a printable tab available?

    • Emanuel

      Nice one as usual

    • tony

great moves like it . never did think of the moves. from 1 to 2 like that . could be why i have been stuck on box one a lot . every time i see you playing that green guitar it reminds me of Steuart Smith`s playing at the 2008 concert i saw. he`s the silent eagle if ya do not know that .
