Playing Faster Has NOTHING To Do With Your Finger Speed!

Now, you can probably guess what makes the most difference (if you know me, you know where I’m going here.)

But let me prove it to you – or rather, show you how to prove it to yourself – in this video:

Oh yeah… the Blues Speed Building Blocks I mentioned is at https://bluesguitarunleashed.com/get-blues-speed-building-blocks/

I understand that if my upper limit on 8th notes is 140 bpm (280 notes/min)
if I can’t play 16ths at 70 bpm (also 280 notes/min) it could be my inability to subdivide the beat properly.

But if I can, my finger speed is still limited to playing 280 notes/min.

The question remains: How can I get my fingers to move faster?

      • Ricardo

OK. Upon further reflection the question is “faster” with respect to “what”.

If I can’t play 16ths at 70 bpm I should be able to play them “faster” if I can play 8ths at 140 bpm.

My finger speed should be equally as fast, however my “absolute” finger speed is still the same, i.e. limited to 280 notes/min.

And I want increase my “absolute” finger speed.

Great lesson.I like your ears tell you when and where your fingers go. Wow!!! And counting. Thanks Griff 🎸🎼

Weird thing for me. I was counting while Griff was plucking the notes just to see if I was keeping time with him. Straight 8th notes were no problem. Triplets worked too (ended up on an “ah”) but 16th notes wouldn’t work…kept ending up at 3 and sometimes the “ee” after beat 3.

Man, sometimes I feel hopeless on this journey.

Big Help Griff ! Makes sense to me…now I know.

Another valuable lesson clearly explained. Thanks Griff!

I am lucky to have been a drummer before I played guitar – because you are exactly right about counting

ALTERNATE PICKING, PULL OFFS AND TWIRLS. THAT MAKE YOUR SPEED. JUST THESE OLD HANDS ARE GETTING STIFF.
SHREDDING IS FOR MEAL HEADS. I USE THE METRONOME ON MY ZOOM R8. RECORDER.

Griff Really good explanation. Good exercise not just for finger movement but for timing and counting the beat. One of your favourite subjects.
      thanks
