So… I was in the studio yesterday and did a little Live stream on Facebook about the pedalboard I used in Memphis back in October for BGU Live.

It seemed to answer some questions so I figured out how to migrate it over to YouTube and embed it here (jenius!)

It’s a little rambling… it was live and I was reading comments and replying and such, but there’s a lot of good info and some decent demonstrations of some different overdrive pedals (the Purple Plexi, the Blues Driver, and the OCD in particular.)

Hope it’s helpful to you in case you didn’t catch it on facebook. (and for some reason it’s all in reverse, I don’t play left handed.)

Saw one of the Anderton’s videos recently where the guy liked to put overdrive etc before the amp, have an amp with a bit of crunch, and put the clean boost in the effects loop. So the boost would amplify the sound of the pedals and pre-amp, not further over drive the preamp. Seems to make sense.

Maybe in your setup the Egnator is still clean in the preamp and all the OD is from the pedals, and then the boost can increase the volume and not be overdriving the preamp.

Hi Griff, What happened to the “Voo Doo Scale” course? I don’t see it listed anymore. Could you run it again in your wayback machine?

NICE SET UP. WAH ! ALWAYS IS BETWEEN THE GUITAR AND YOUR PEDAL BORD.
HAVE HAD MANY IN THE PAST. BEST BOARD I HAD WAS IN 1971. ALL ANOLOG.
ENDED UP SELLING IT WHEN I DID STUDIO WORK.
12 YEARS AGO I BOUGHT A BOSS ME 70 WITH THE WAH. LIKE ALL IN ONE PEDAL BOARD.
TOOK IT TO THIS GUY IN LONG BEACH, AND HE OPENED UP AD CHANGED OUT SOME RESISOTRS AND A FEW TRANSITORS AND NOW IT HAS THAT ANLOG SOUND.
COST ME $150.00. ALL I HAVE BEFORE IT FROM MY WAH PPDAL, IS A BOOSTER WITH FEEDBACK. I GOT THAT DAVID GILMORE SOUND, ANY SOUND YOU WANT.
UESED IT MANY TIMES AND HAD ROBERT PLANT ASK ME HOW I GOT A DIGITAL PIECE OF JUNK, TO SOUND LIKE WHAT I HAD THE SOUND BACK IN THE 60’S. HE WAS JOKING, BUT WANTED TO KNOW WHERE TO HAVE THE WORK DONE ON SOME OF HIS DIGITAL PEDALS . FORGOT THE GUYS NAME, BUT NOT THE LOCATION.
REALLY LOVE YOUR SET UP GRIFF. NICE INFO.THANKS ,TAKE CARE.
        PS: NICE CARPET!!

Thank you for the lesson. I hope you come out with more pedal lessons and how to set them up properly.
May you and your family have a wonderful holidays
      Thanks

Noticed right away ur playing left handed. I’m a lefty. I can’t even play very good that way. That’s amazing to me that u can play either way. Very cool Griff

    • Michael Chappell

      Hey Griff,
Great to see you in a happy mood even though it looks like you are taping this with a mirror as everything is reversed to Left Hand..
I have the Boss Blues Driver and a few separate pedals but recently purchased the Boss ME 80 which has 76 Effects including the Blues Driver and others and a Wah Pedal equally up to 76 units of Memory Banks.. have a look at it. Just makes it more simple. Equally it can link directly through your PC to download online additional effects from the Boss website.
      All Good.
I would like to wish you and your family and all the extended Family of BGUers a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year for 2017.

      Cheers

Dear Griff; nice video indeed, but…….as far as I remember, you used Line 6 M9 for recording instructional videos and Kemper gear for live situations.

¿¿¿Are you back to analog stompboxes connected to an old Egnater head???

Your playing is great anyway, doesn’t matter the gear/guitar you use, and I really dig your way of teaching.

Trying to get that SRV sound and can’t come up with the right pedal configuration . I have a American made strat w/ custom shop single coil pickups and a peavy xxx tube head w/ 4- 10 or 12″ inch speakers not sure. I also have the tubescreamer that was suggested.

        • brian

          SRV’s setup was quite simple.
          Guitar> Wah > Tube Screamer > Amp
the tube screamers settings were usually
volume 10 tone in the middle gain almost off or about
          9 oclock.
Although SRV was most known to use a 15″ Vibroverb amp
the other amp he would use with it was a Fender Super
          That amp uses 4x10s..

I would use the 4×10 cabinet because you get a brighter
tighter sound than using a 12 speaker. That was a big part
          of SRV’S sound.
Back to your amp… I would suggest to use the clean channel
not the overdrive and set the volume just to where it starts
to distort… then turn on the tube screamer pedal. and use the
tube screamer … you might have to turn back the treble knob
on the amp because it will sound bright but twangy.
When Stevie played VooDoo chile he had both the Wah and tube screamer on.. by having the tubescreamer after the wah
really accenutates the wah , if you run the wah after the
tube screamer does not sound as great.
.. also alot of times Stevie just used either
the neck pickup alone or the middle pick up alone.

    • Steve

Were you saying “BB-3” of “DD-3” Thanks.

    • Brian

Hey we got two Brian s .I’m the one from Australia. ie which pedal. Thanks for that advice. Ohyeah, subtitles are on and octave fuzz comes out as octopuss. Ha ha

      • brian

I’me the other Brian. I am from Canada.
        Nice too meet you.

    • Brian

If I only buy one pedal which one do you reckon would be best. By the way thanks for your lessons Griff great.

    • Andy Tan

I know nothing about pedals and their advantages /applications. I like to read and learn more about their selection. Can someone recommend me where to find write out ,manual or literature so that I can gain more knowledge prior to buy them to enhance my playing ?

      • brian

sure check this link to Amazon.com.
There is a book boss pedals guide.

That is a good place to start.
I also saw a dvd titled ” ultimate gear guides technology
and manuals made simple boss pedal ”

Youtube to me is really the place to check stuff out
Because its one thing to read a book.
But to really learn you have to watch and listen.

also check out the web show ” that pedal show”
This show will explain the applications of different pedals

and one last thing to do is look up a guy named Pete Thorn
He does tonnes of gear reviews…make notes of how he sets the controls and go and try the pedal (s) and use those setting to dial in a great sound

    • brian

      Great demo video.

I noticed how your small board did not have a rotary pedal.
I recently discovered this pedal digitech makes called
The ” Ventura Avenue ” it is a great all in one univibe/ rotary pedal
about the size of a mxr phase 90 pedal and it runs on -9 volts.

Also another great addition to the small board would be
The Big Joe stompbox PB 107 power box lithium…
once again it is about the size of a mxr pedal and is a rechargeable battery
      power supply for a pedalboard.

If you get a chance in January to go to NAMM check out
JRockett audio… they will have their own version of the rechargeable battery
pedalboard power supply . They will also be releasing a
Steve Stevens overdrive that is also a 6 band graphic eq.

    • william ormerod

Seemed appropriate to make some Hendrix noises while you’re a lefty

    • william ormerod

      Great demo
Best of all it is great to see you still amused by the toys after all these years

seems to be uncool to act like a kid in a sweetshop these days but i can’t do anything else
      glad I’m not alone

    • Lee Libby

Hey cool Griff. You play left handed now and wear clothes with backward writing.

    • Mike

Excellent, informal, information session. More on the blog please. Thanks again
      Mike

    • Steve

Thanks for putting this in the blog. I don’t do facebook. Very informative.

    • John

Griff: Great “video” and demonstration for the pedals. Love to see you “reversed” and becoming ambidextrous! Very good information about the pedals. Like the others above, I am not on facebook and appreciate your putting this on the blog/BGU site. Thanks again.

    • Big Dan

Hey jenius, you spelled genius wrong! lol Another great blog boss, thanks so much for the info.

    • John Lo Re

Great video Griff! Something is going on with all of the reverse images on YouTube!

    • Rox

Playing in front of a mirror will put things in reverse.

    • Rox

Thank you for helping us so much.
Been playing for more than 50 years and did not make as much progress as since I became a bgu fan forever.

    • Rox

Thanks for putton this out there.
Privacy concerns prevent me from face booking
You are the greatest teacher, ever!!!

    • Bernard Murray

Nice work with the pedals. It’s nice to see and hear how those things work. I just started to contemplate getting a looper (Maybe Ditto). I just saw some videos on that at Sweeetwater.

    • Louis Ogden

Thanks Griff! I knew zip point nothing about pedals until today, so thanks for making me a pro . I’m putting some of these on my Christmas list. Happy holidays to you and your family and thanks for your wisdom!!

      Louis

    • RollyS

I am not on Facebook so really appreciated seeing this on your blog! Thank you so much for this. Merry Christmas to you and your family!

    • tony

i never understood why one needs so many pedals . i use right now two digitechs together. first the rp 80 then the old school rp7 . i only tried this recently because the tuner portion of the rp7 doesnt always work. i use mostly the classic blackface sound . it gives the system a power boost and its basic . i will say that the system that you use kicks butt.

    • Ken Terrill

Looking good as a lefty, Griff! As a real one, I always appreciate seeing what it looks like! Thanks for the tips on pedals.

    • Jack aaron

Kool beans, you are the bomb. Secrets you can never get jamers to reveal. Tks

    • jim bradshaw

Great stuff. I needed some info on pedal placement.

    • Kevin Kirkland

What, if anything, do you tweak or use differently when playing one of your Humbucker guitars?

      • Griff

Just volume, if that. Typically everything stays the same between strat and LP. I like it that way to bring out the differences in the guitar themselves.

    • Pat Matthews

      Griff,
thank-you for sharing your music with me. I have learned so much from you regarding guitars music, and just enjoying the sound. You have motivated me in ways you mat never know. You gave an old man purpose again.

    • Robert M

I just want to lay my guitar at your feet and call it a day!

    • Tom

Nice reverse image – how did you manage that one?

    • Lynn

Enjoyed…. pedals come later for me, so many things to learn and so little time.

    • TUH TUHMANN

TOP OF THE SEASON TO YOU AND YOURS GRIFF.PROSPERITY IN ABUNDANCE KING.HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND PLEASE,HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS

I know very little about pedals. How about a segment limited to the Blues Driver, Tube screamer and Purple Plexi,or thereabouts?

    • George Howells

wheres the tab – thanks Griff great fun listening at work :>)

    • Phil Bate

I’ give my right arm to be ambidextrous!
