While to some folks The Blues and Christmas don’t exactly go hand in hand, there have been some truly great Christmas blues songs recorded throughout the years.

Honestly I really didn’t know about this until one of my students brought it to my attention and I started to investigate further all of the Christmas songs out there done by blues artists.

This particular one, “Merry Christmas Baby” was recorded by Elvis Presley. It’s such a perfect example of one of the Blues Guitar Unleashed lessons at work, that I just had to make a video out of it and show you how it’s put together.

Granted, this is not a note-for-note transcription of the tune, that would be illegal. This is, however, very much in the style of Merry Christmas Baby and is a common idea that could be used for dozens of blues songs. Enjoy and Merry Christmas Everyone!

Just want to say how much I appreciate the lessons and how they have impacted my life. Surgery, after an injury to my left arm that damaged my elbow and the nerves in my arm, had me feeling pretty down. Earlier in the year I happened upon one of your introductory Blues lessons and picked up my guitar just to mess around with it and see what I had left for mobility and feeling in my left hand. It was painful and really slow the first couple of times I tried it, but after a week I really noticed a difference. Physical therapy wasn’t working well, but I found that repeatedly playing some of your lessons began to give me some mobility back and showed me that there may indeed be light at the end of the tunnel and I might be able to play the guitar again. After a month I bought the “Unleashed” set and have been slowly working my way through it. Now, several months later I can chord again and find the notes on the strings, and can play music again!!! I thought I’d never be able to enjoy sitting on a chair in the living room and just plucking tunes on the guitar, but although it’s going to be a long grind to get back to the level I was at prior to the accident, your course and the way you present it have helped me overcome my depression and experience the joy of playing again. My heartfelt thanks and a very special Merry Christmas to you and yours Griff; and have a great New Years as well.

• Jeff Hinton

Great song Griff! Your friendly easy going approach is why I purchased your course. Thank you and merry Christmas to you and your family!

I have realized that over the course of building a relationship with real estate owners, youll be able to come to understand that, in every real estate financial transaction, a commission amount is paid. Ultimately, FSBO sellers do not save the commission rate. Rather, they try to win the commission through doing a agents work. In the process, they expend their money and also time to complete, as best they might, the tasks of an adviser. Those tasks include disclosing the home via marketing, showing the home to buyers, making a sense of buyer desperation in order to induce an offer, organizing home inspections, taking on qualification inspections with the loan provider, supervising maintenance tasks, and facilitating the closing of the deal.

• Jim Henley

Griff, Ya need get into the singing part of the sample’s you show on your lessons so your students can see just where the music matches the words. Makes it easier to understand.

Hi Griff,
Your lessons are great. Easy to understand and relatively easy to master. I really appreciate all you do to help us wantabe guitar players learn. I have a hard time sometimes because of numbness on my left hand from a back injury which makes it hard to make the chords but because of you, I keep trying. Thanks Griff and I hope you have a very Merry Christmas.

• Leon Allen

As a jazz sax and flute player for many years who is teaching himself to play guitar, I want to tank you for the information you make available to your audience. I hope that they realize that in order to become a good player they have to learn as much as they can from people who know whats going on and then use that data to forge their own identity on their ax. Over the years I have taken bits an pieces of licks from Trane, Cannonball, Parker, Pat Martino, etc. from transcriptions and records which has, for better or worse, made me they player I am. Because life is short and it takes many hours to copy licks off of records, you help to shorten the learning curve for many musicians. As a musician and an ex music teacher in the public school system, I appreciate your efforts to share your knowledge and experience.

• Rick Lewis

In reply to Joesph Peano about slowing down the video one of the ways you can do this is to dowload a video player that has a slomo function – for example VLC media player (which is free). The slowdown function in VLS media player is in the bottom R/H portion of the scree, as standard it shows as x1 if you click on it you get a slider that allows you to slow down the video.

As to a slow down feature on the course – the course actualy comes on DVD so if you play it back on your computer (again using VLC media player) you could slow down the video. However the courses all come with execellent books with tab etc. and Griff explaines everything extremly clearly. In addition there is a very lively and helpful forum if you get stuck. You really cant go wrong!

• Gumar

Loved it sounds like fun

griff, I have recently found your website and instruction material. I am considering enrolling in your blues guitar unleashed guitar instruction video/CD course. I believe I could learn solo expression IF the instruction offers the ability to SLOW down the video to reveal the note/finger positions. I must have replayed the solo portion 20 times but still can’t quite get it. Is this possible? If so I will sign up without hesitation!
Thank you.

• Murray K in Ottawa

Just wanted to ask, if your guitar blues course is available to purchase from you indirectly, as I dont use credit cards online or off, so cannot purchase it online?
I share my online messages in your emails with my MRS, and we both love the way you explain the simplest of methods to get the sound results with the guitar. Perhaps it is time I got around to doing more than just bits and pieces since I have 3 of them, 2 acoustics (an acoustic Yamaha, and a Digas classical and an electric Gibson)
By the by, yours is the first Christmas wish I have received this year (2010) so in return, To you and yours, may your days be merry and bright (too) that is think Happy, Happy. But do remember the reason for the season, eh!
Murray and Rose K

• Dr Golf

Hi Griff,
To do with speed. I remember when I was in a band in the 60’s the drummer tried to teach me how to do a drum roll. You started off with two beats with each stick, got faster and faster and then at a point it was almost like skipping and the roll developed. At that point I lost it completely. Its the same with guitar – I practice but all of a sudden I come to a grinding halt. Maybe I wasn’t meant to play fast or my brain is too slow. Does anyone else have the problem and how do you get over it?
Dr Golf

Another cool lesson to keep me busy ’til I get my hands on the UBG course! I’ve downloaded so many licks’n’ lessons now for appetizers, I only hope I manage to get all this stuff down before the main course gets here! Merry Christmas, Griff, although here in the wonderful land of Oz it’s Friday 13th of August! And about a pleasantly cool 15%… winter here, but I’m betting it would seem like summer to our Alaskan friend! Nice to see a couple more Aussies here too…

Hi Griff, I finally ordered the blues unleashed course. I’ve been playing many years, self taught, and was really impressed on how you can manipulate the various pentatonic scales. I’ve also been stuck in a rut with these scales.I believe that I’m finally starting to make sense with the scales. I cant wait for the coarse to arrive.

• Ray

Gooday Griff, I’m from Australia and have been playing lead guitar in a rock band for many years. I saw your site about 5 days ago and immediately sent for your course. I love playing what you’re showing us. Never enjoyed playing my guitar as much as I have over the last few days. This latest little riff is just great. I look forward to getting stuck into your course as soon as it arrives.
Wish I saw this years ago ..Thanks.

Anyway….enjoying what you have sent so far and I’m picking up lot’s of little handy hints to improve my playing along the way…Cheers Mate…..from the out back blues lover…Dale

• Jimmie T.

Very cool and “simple” practice lesson… Lot’s of room for getting personal with it. It’s a cool, bluesy lesson that I plan on repeating again and again until I drive my wife & pets completely insane!

Thanks for this and all the other lessons! Finding someone as personable as yourself that is willing to openly share their knowledge is golden, and I feel as if I’ve discovered a pot of it at the end of a rainbow in your lessons. Have a great 2010!

Hey Griff, That guitar sounds so sweet. The Bluesy sound is fantastic and the fingers behind it make it better which is the trick.

Merry Christmas Griff!

I just got your \"Blues Unleashed\" discs two days ago and am extremely happy with it. You are an excellent teacher and do a great job of explaining and demonstrating what you\’re teaching. I\’ve been playing for many years, and a lot of people think I\’m a very good player, however, I\’ve never been happy with my own playing and know there\’s a lot I can learn. I know I\’d be much better than I am now if I\’d ever had a really good teacher in the past. Of course the DVD format makes learning very easy, as you can slow down and repeat things as neccessary, without being afraid of irritating the teacher. The $137.00 price is a real bargain when you consider how much private lessons cost these days. Because I just got the series I\’m not sure how deeply you go into the subject, but you should consider expanding it into more of the jazz blues voicings. modes, and progressisons, and put together Blues Unleashed II.
Thanks again, and keep up what you’re doing.

• Mike

Hio Griff
Another good one. I\\\’m still practicing for my \\\’exams\\\’, but your blues style helps me free up a little.
Keep em coming. One day I may even buy the whole bunch, butfor now I\\\’ve got to fund my other course.
Have a great christmas, and a prosperous new year. We have snow here in England, looks great but it\\\’s a pain for getting around and working

Hey Griff…
Thanks for the AWESOME lesson…something REALLY easy but sounds SO cool on my electric guitar!!! Just love this little tune….
I really like your teaching style, I’ve learned some cool stuff, like having a guitar teacher just dropping by… Hey, don’t worry about not having the ‘set-up’ and just doing this from your office with no preperation…WHO CARES, a ‘low key’ lesson like this is just like learning a cool lick from a friend, please do more of these Griff! Thanks again, Merry Christmas!!!

• Will

Griff,
Thanks for that – Really like the ‘Merry Christmas Elvis’ tune, it’s fun to play too.

Griff,
I have really enjoyed the lessons that you sent, I haven’t had much time to use them yet but I have saved them all. Sometimes other things must come first, I am a young 60 years old and still have this great urge to learn to play lead Guitar, the rhythm come sort of easy but I have a real problem with solo lead.
I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
Thank for you efforts,

• Robert (Rob) Lacelle

Hi Griff,
I just recently received both of your blues courses and I’m trying to retrain myself with your help. I am a 52 and I have always enjoyed picking up my guitar. This will be the first time that I have someone show me the right way to play my girls (my guitars). I got my first guitar thirty some years ago and the only tune that I know is House Of The Rising Sun. But I think I got it, so when I seen your courses I thought to myself that you will be the ONE that will get me out of this circle that I seem to be stuck on. I like what I see and I hope that sometime in 2010 I will be playing my girls with the sounds of B.B. King, Robert Johnson or Son House in the background. So thank you very much and a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year to you and your family.
p.s. If you need some snow for your nice warm winter, there’s plenty here in Ontario and my friend your welcome to take as much as you want. Peace!!:)

• George

Hi Griff,
I’m still new to guitar, but absolutely love your lessons. Your teaching style blows away the ‘competition ‘ and makes it so much more fun, as in, less frustrating. I’m getting your beginner’s course in the new year. There is so much ‘noise ‘ available on the web, but I’m satisfied you are the real deal. Merry Christmas from Nova Scotia, Canada.

• John Guerrasio

Hi Griff,

I think Merry Christmas, Baby is by the late great Charles Brown. I saw him several times in a NYC club back in the 80’s and he’d do this tune every year even in the middle of July. It’s snowy and very cold in London!

Be well,
John

• Peter

Currently my mornings start with breakfast with family and then 30 minutes with Griff. I’ll miss U when I’m through the lessons.

Merry Christmas Griff

• Maurice Anholt

Griff,
Thank-you for the lessons that you have given to us. There are little subtle tricks that you give away and you explain exactly what is going on fingering and picking, and without explaining when you mute the strings, that it happens so fast…it is as if you are watching a magician doing slight of hand tricks right in front of you…over and over, you can’t see what is done unless it is explained and slowed down. And so it is with what you present to us on the guitar…slight of hand tricks that we watch Clapton and Gilmour doing right in front of us over and over…once in a while being rewarded for being very diligent, we will actually learn a riff. Thanks again for taking the time. Have a Merry Christmas! Maurice

Hi Griff , Thank for the Christmas Greeting . I just got your package. I was getting concerned that it got lost in the mail. But As the snow started thawing on my front porch, I saw this lump in the snow … and lo and behold It was my Guitar
Unleashed Course. The box was a bit soggy, but due to the sealed plastic wrap,
everything was dry and useable. I tried the #1 DVD , but have’nt got any sound out of it yet. I’ll keep on trying…. I’m looking forward to getting into it.

Thanks for the Xmas lesson. Still would appreciate it if you could play the whole lick or song through one time before you actually start instruction. Gives us a "what to expect" or how it SHOULD sound as completed song.

• Tom Townsend

Thank you, and Merry Christmas. What I also hear when you play the first riff is part of a Viagra commercial…. “When the time is right” wah wah… 🙂

Aways nice to see and hear something new from Griff – one of the good guys…. I purchased Blues Guitar Unleashed last year and consider it the springboard and inspiration for learning blues guitar. Maybe an intermediate lesson plan is in the works? Thank you and Merry Christmas to you and yours.
