Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown was one of the most active blues musicians in the last 60 years. Brown played with a number of the best blues musicians around including Albert Collins and Freddie King. And not only was he a fast guitar slinger, he was a stellar fiddle player and a harp player. This guy could keep with any of the young cats, even well into his later years. I collected a few performances that I think you’ll really enjoy from Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown including a short piece with Freddie King and some of his own work. Brown recorded music for thirty years, even the same year he passed away at the age of 81. I sure hope you dig all these performances as much as I did!

There’s nothing better than seeing Freddie King and Clarence Brown swinging hard, playing their guitars. Check out this short number from “The Beat” in 1966 at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f13OyN_KrVg.

Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown might have been born in Louisiana, but he was raised in Texas. Enjoy one of his tunes on the hit television show Austin City Limits at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R8H8CNjjXo.

I thought the groove on this next song was pretty deep so I wanted to share it with you. Check out “Dollar Got The Blues” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V85V5aDEeSk.

Lastly, I had to share this next video for two reasons. One, Clarence tears it up on guitar for his tune “Pressure Cooker” and two, he kills it just as much on the fiddle in the last half of the video. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVK_nSrxhiQ.

I hope you enjoyed watching these performances from Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. He was a true blues musician to his core, and helped keep organic music alive well into his later years. There’s more coming your way at Blues Guitar Unleashed, so stay tuned.

Thanks,

Griff

    • I am very sorry that a true musician and performer like mr. Clarence Gatemouth Brown for some reason did get his due recognition from the music world. I can’t even start to entertain the thought of what may or could have stop him from becoming one of the largest names in the blues theater. The man was a legend that was not recognized, is there anybody that say why?

Third Ward Blues, brother. Most people think of Austin and Stevie, but this is where it all started. We used to sneak (read that walk) into 3rd Ward clubs in high school when everyone was “jammin” to the Bee f’in Gees.

Great stuff!! Back in the sixties and seventies I used to play drums with groups like this. I do miss it. Don’t miss the time on the road……….
