Now that we’ve spent a fair amount of time with box 1, let’s take it up the fretboard a bit into the next 4 fret region which is commonly called box 2.
Keep in mind that we’re only adding 1 single note here. All of the notes, A C D E and G, are included in box 1. These are simply a different way to finger the same notes. Because of where it sits on the neck, we gain one more note on the top, and lose one on the bottom.
But, box 2 is very important when it comes to mixing between the major and minor sounds so be sure you get it down.
Also, the mix of the 2 boxes is enough to make a career out of and play for years.

I do love numbers … and they can be comforting. You can purchase your &#im;02l82ited edition with type-os” copy or wait until the new one is available in about a day or two
Good day of the week would you mind sharing which weblog platform you are operational with? I’ll arise my identifiable blog hastily nonetheless I am having a tough epoch choosing connecting BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. Excellent info Griff and Great job on teaching how – thanks much…
Cool lesson. Thanks so much Griff
I want it Blues Guitar Unleashed by Griff Hamlin
My bad, Steve, the excellent teacher is correct on the blues scale. I would only add that box 1 is minor pentatonic blues built on the G chord of the CAGED system so can be called the G shape of the pentatonic blues. That makes box two the E shape of the minor pentatonic blues. To make a minor pentatonic scale major one begins box 2 or E shape on the A note and that is Amaj pentatonic and according to CAGED logic starting Box 1 or G form on the F# is the G form of the Amaj pentatonic. These scales are built on CAGED chord shapes and follow the CAGED logic. Box 3 will be the D form of the scale:
10…12
10…12
10…12
9….12
10…13
10…12
That is Amin pentatonic minus the blue notes Which are 11th fret high E and on the low E strings. Box 4 will be the C shape and box 5 will be the A shape of the CAGED system. This does not work in the major and minor scales where one has seven notes and seven shapes. Once Steve takes us through the 5 shapes one cane play any pentatonic or pentatonic blues scale anywhere on the fret board which will expand one’s ability to play leads and improvise along with backing tracks or even songs once one figures out the key. He is giving us the key to basic soloing across the fret board. Blues scales are good with rock and roll and it is cool to play an Amin progression or song sliding from position to position or even jumping over one to another. This man, you Steve, are one of the finest teachers and you are generous to share so much. One can trust that his teaching courses are well worth the investment, and they are investment in one’s ability to progress in this discipline. Many thanks, Steve!

ignore this, I was thinking major scale interval, my bad.
It seems there are different fingerings for the box 2 pentatonic. I use 2 notes on the E and A strings, the same for all strings actually, with a larger step on A and D and G and B and E back to shorter step.

Pratice Practice Practice, my new mantra! Thanks Griff
i have no vidio.
COuld you resend box 1. For some reason I missed or misplaced it.
Blues Box 2 Video not coming through.
Nice video! Thanks Griff!
Thank you for sending me a lesson. I have a copy with all 5 box’s on it. got it last year, around this time. I know box 1 and 2 by heart already. In the past year i have fallen out of remmision with my ilness. try to play and practice as much as i can when I feel good. Griff i have had BGU for a year and still have not gotten to dvd2 yet. just knowing box 1&2 has made me into a much better lead guitarist. I think I told you about PHAT PHISH. I’m trying hard to learn where all the notes ar on the fret board. I did your practice techniec which helped alot. I kind of made up my own way of remebering where all the same notes are . kind of like using the abc’s. thank you. wish i was healthy enough to see you perform, but maybe you will perform in the beach area one day. thanks again and God bless you and your family.
Great lesson, thanks!
Where`s the video ?
Griff – no video on mine either,
Griff, another great/helpful/make-me-want-to-practice video, pdf and audios.
Dude, you should really create a blues guitar course or something with all this information you have. I think you could make a lot of money that way. j/k
A great lesson! I hope there will be some follow up to this lesson showing specific (simple) examples of how to use this pattern to create some popular riffs.
Thanks again,
John

Oh, it’s also cool to get the PDF version and print it out for practice later without the computer.
If you don’t see the video you can click on the WMV version. Give it a minute to open. You can also download the WMV version by right clicking on the WMV link and hit “save link as…” to save it wherever you want on your computer. You’re welcome. : )

Thanks, I know all 5 boxes, but I was wondering about the best way to put them together to run a solo up the neck.
Hi Griff……… just started watching your lessons and I’m learning alot.I’m 55 yrs young and always wanted to play Guitar , especially the Blues Guitar. I started playing about 6mths ago. You’re videos have been the most helpfull! Do you have the TABS for this 2nd box , I find TABS very helpfull.
Thanks……….Bill
Hi Griff,my profile is very similar to Andrew’s! I have been following your free lessons for a good while and want to say how thorough and easy to follow I have found them. You have a patient and generous style that makes the learning easy.I appreciate very much that you make your time and expertise available for free. I would hope to buy your course when my finances improve! Thanks again.
I have been watching your “free“ lesson for about a month and find them most informative and easy follow. I‘m 66 yrs. Old and have been noodling around on the guitar, more or less for a few years. I know a couple of songs and quite a few chords. The question i want to ask is, when i wanted to play with a friend he said “ you‘ve got to learn how to get in on the One chord. Could you give an example or an answer. I suppose some beginners lìke me, want start playing with others and solo playing, chords riffs, etc. Doesn‘ teach that…
Hey Griff
Thanks again for a good mini lesson … I’ve been working on learning all that I can from your free lessons . They really help … You’re a GREAT teacher !!! Once I get back on track and working after more than 2 years of suffering the economic mess we’re in I’d really like to purchase all your lessons . For now I’ll keep working on what I’ve started . Thanks again … Adios Amigo
Bought the BGU 2 weeks ago and learned more in two weeks then 2 years on my own. These are great mini lessons. You want to stop trying and really play. GET IT! No, I am not related to Griff!
Box 1 – Got It.
Box 2 – couldn’t tell what notes/frets you were doing to, so I was plodding all over the neck trying to make it sound right. The chart in the PDF is a lifesaver here.
Your awesome , thank you so much, I’m behind but learning how too save these lessons. More more , and more. 🙂
Xlnt
Excellent lesson. I will make very good use of these scales. Thanks

Regards. Phill.
you are a gifted teacher. patient, and purposeful in placing of camera so as to see exactly what you are doing. thanks a bunch!
It’s great to know you only need to know 2 boxes instead of four, especially for those of us who don’t want to be professional guitarists, but want to sound good.
Many thanks Griff !!
The quality is excellent as usual and your teaching approach very usefull ! I appreciate very much the close up of the guitar neck.
Grazie and ciao from Italy
Adalberto
Griff
As usual, your style of teaching has helped me overcome the fear of going from backing guitar to lead guitar. Keep doing what you are doing!
Have been doing this learning E and A minor pentatonic and learning the boxes,i like the idea of the pinky slide and am trying to make pinky stronger and 4 th finger stronger.Every tip helps Griff -thanks.

Hi I am alittle behind on the box lessons how do I go back to the lesssons on box 1
For some reason I did’nt get the video either.
Thank you Griff for giving me this free lesson, it make a different in my learning. Once again thank you.
Thanx Griff for your free lessons for i cant afford . Your a pro.
thankyou
Great extention to box 1
Not a newbie but stilll find some of the material interesting, good teacher!
Hard on my acoustic, but I,ll keep practicing, Griff ,thanks again for your hard work.
I love this Griff I know I am strange but I love playing scales.
I actually didn’t recognize box #2 as a singular entity…just kind of found it on my own thru experimentation seeing how and where I might precede from position #1…I think that if you just take a leap forward and see what can happen by starting on a different note from box#1 in a different location all these possibilities will present themselves and if you are a little vigilant in your proceeding’s…then the connectors will be obvious…but then I’m an explorer at heart.
All in all a great little lesson…sorry for the ramble.
thanks
RK
Great! I can always learn something new from you!
Thanks, Skip
Hi Griff , i know these 2 box’s are very important but i am finding it difficult to link the runs i will get there though in time Regards Barry
Great lesson as always Griff.
Griff,
Since the beginning I have been practicing these *boxs* up and down the neck,i just used to practice them as scales, and not really understanding what scales they where, now I do and also how to link them together.
Exellent
Oh yes, and from my practicing of your earlier lessons on the bends and pull offs/hammer ons..these are easier and sounding sweet now.
And on your lesson about learning the positions of the C note and learning where they are on the fretboard, a piano teacher who is a good friend hooked me up to learning them from the beginning.
he pointed out that B&C & E&F are always together and equally as important..for keys and guitar.
As allways Thanks.
For some reason this video did not come through. Others have not been a problem to load.
This is really good, Griff. Thank you!
I’ve “taught” @ the college level and know how useless some stuff can be for the practitioner/player.
Your approach is useful and, frankly, geared for one who wants to play – not teach. Thank you!
Heya Griff , been bouncing back and forth between here and my guitar teacher . Can never have too many teachers in music ! Got the scales downloaded …new things to learn ! YES !
great stiff i can lean the box 2 lean the notes too thanks
Is there a reason for using Barre chords as apposed to open chords and visa versa, or is it just a preferance
thanks again griff good pickin
for some reason can’t get the video
In a simple & understandable way, you continue to demystify the things that baffled me. Thanks.
You are by far the easiest teacher I have seen on the internet, and I enjoy your Free lessons very much, however I am maybe going to want to do a little more in-depth studying, do you ever have SALES on some of your DVD’s? All of them seem very interesting but my budget is VERY thin… I hate to sound cheap but I have to be.
Hi griff…Realy enjoy playing blues scales.I feel they help to keep the fingers more
flexible for playing the riffs, and then they come esier quicker. As usul great stuff.
Hey Griff, that was great, I haven’t seen that pattern yet, will start working on it. Thankx
Hey Griff,
I am really starting to see the long-term advantage of patterns versus notes. I’m looking forward to more “box” pattern lessons.
Brian form Lockport
Hey Griff,
Got the info – but not the video.
Thanks, Jim
hey griff as far as i can tell this is the best thing ive seen you do so far. as far as the cream experment thing i think you should do it i am a huge cream fan like the songs strange brew and born under a bad sign and or course badge with george harrison, thanks much catch you later .
Where is the video =(
I am not a beginner, and I know you can cover a lot of music if your jamming
and somebody says, take it! It’s good to pratice with audio.
Thank you so much for teaching me the blues box 2.
Hi Griff, I’m new to guitar playing and would consider myself as entry level for the basic chords that I play. I’ve just ordered your Blues Course and hope to move to a new level as I have watched your videos and hope they will help me out. Keep up the great work you are sharing to people like myself and I look forward to your e-mails and videos.
tks. Art
i always asked other good guitarists about how to structer a couple of scales together. they really didnt know how .they could shread but it sounds like crap.THANKS FOR THE INFO mucho appricated Griff .new beginnings for me playing for 4 decades.
Finally box 2 demonstrated. I’ve seen box 2 & etc. on the net but never understood anything about the continuation of the box structure. Until you can see someone use & explain the other boxes they make no sense to a neophyte like myself (probably to Eric they did). I just had to say thanks & I will practice this box as much as the others. Are there some standard licks that go exclusively with box 2 as there are with box 1. Have you shown them? Have I missed them?
nice one learnt a lot from you many thanks
griff, im going to try and play out of the box…..extend my licks
many thanx for box 2…….
Thanks Griff-
Everything is great and all but I was wondering when you are gonna teach us how to take class-A drugs and how to deal with groupies who don’t wanna leave?
Many thanks.
Nice one Griff – many thanks!
YEAH BEBBE…WE”S KICKING HERE THANX GRIFF
I always wondered how that worked. Thank you so very much for the explanation.
thanks very much very interesting
KEEP UP THE GREAT STUFF. HAVE LEARNT A LOT FROM YOU AS YOU ARE A GREAT TEACHER THAT SIMPLIFIES COMPLEX STUFF. PLEASE WHAT ARE THE NOTES FOR BOX 2 AND ON WHICH FRET DOES IT BEGIN?
I have been trying to play for many years. Several live teachers and several online. I bought your Blues Unleashed after studying you on line for about 3 months. You are the best guitar teacher I have ever seen. I absolutely get your method and approach every time. I am so glad I found you. I have learned more from you than all other instructions combined. I cant say enough about you. Highly and strongly recommend even to the seasoned player. Keep up the great work Griff! Dan in Phoenix
Wow… a whole new world….. Box2
Nice one Griff
Colin.
Fanastic!! You are by far one of the best instructors, including players that I’ve come across. Thank You, is just not enough for what you give people. That being said, I just had to buy your beginner blues DVD set. And love it. So Thank you so much for teaching me the right way to learn to play the guitar.
line6M9
AWESOME, I MAY NEVER BE ANY GOOD, BUT I AM 100% BETTER THAN I WAS BEFORE GRIFF. WHAT MORE NEED I SAY.
Thank you
I DIDN’T KNOW THAT YOU CAN CONNECT THE PENTATONIC SCALE AT THE THIRD STRING AND FORM A MINOR PENTATONIC.
THANKS GRIFF,
Doug
Thanks Griff! That helps alot!!
Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Griff

Any thoughts/advice on neck radii?
Thanks Griff great stuff man always look forward to your lessons.
Griff, I just want to say THANKS. About 10 yrs. ago I had a stroke and whereas my brain still retained all the technical knowledge for playing the guitar, my body (fingers) were unwilling to co-operate. Through the use of your DVD’s and Videos I am playing almost as well as I used to, plus more ! Thank you so much for giving me back the joy of playing !!!
Forever in your debt,
Gregg Schafer
Griff
I like your personality, teaching style and lessons. Yours are the best I’ve found. Thank you.
I have played acoustic guitar for years and for years been in a rut. Your lessons open the door for new playing adventure and satisfaction. Fingering and rhythm can be learned on an acoustic but tone and bending probably not. How far can one progress with an acoustic before an electric is required? I have begun looking at electrics but there is much to learn about sound, pickups, amps, etc before I buy one. Strats and Les Pauls seen to define the endpoints of the spectrum. Does the style of the guitar really matter for a new learner who does not intend to perform? I have looked at new and used guitars between $250 and $500, and inexpensive, low power practice amps.
Thanks again.
Best Regards
Gary Naisbitt
Hi Griff, great stuff from you thankyou, but just latly there is no sound coming through.
awesome Griff, sound jazzy too
Yes , good one , now this was a helpful lesson .Thx Griff.
just wanted to say all your lessons have been awesome. im a 21 year old electric guitar player who plays a jackson dinky so im probably not your typical viewer, but still i feel like iv learned so much from these videos and it relly is amazing of you to put out so much for free
Hi Griff – I just purchased a 4-string Bass guitar – I also have my son’s 6-string, so I have the two electric guitars here. I’ve been following your postings for some time and believe me, you are the best – always cool, calm and collected, polite and generous and a pleasure to watch. I congratulate you and thank you.
I notice postings from several “seniors” – maybe I’m the most “senior”, as I just celebrated my 87th birthday in January. Like some others, I can’t find box 1 – (I’ve saved all your e-mails). Where can I find the file(s)?
Thanks again – all the best. “Jon-Jon”.

Griff,
I’m a soldier currently stationed in Afghanistan and love watching your videos. They have a helped out a great deal. Can I ask a favor? When you talk about the fingering for something new, can you mention sometimes which frets you are hitting? This would help us new players out a bunch.
The video doesn’t zoom in enough, and sadly, because of network restrictions, none of the computers here that can see these videos can connect to the network, so it’s a pain in the ass to print the stuff out.
Other than that, your stuff is great and definitely makes me want to play more…thanks!
Mike
GRIFF IM 54 YEARS OLD AND BEEN PLAYING MUSIC OFF AND ON FOR YEARS. NOW THAT ALL MY KIDS ARE GROWN I STARTED BACK PLAYING.I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR ALL THE GOOD LICKS YOU HAVE SHOWN ME .I LOVE THE BLUES ALL MY LIFE AND YOU BROUGHT THAT ALL BACK TO ME. THANKS AGAIN.AND NOW I CAN KEEP UP WITH THE BEST.
hi griff love your stuff awsome but i cant recall getting blues box 1 would be awsome if i could get hold of it cheers griff n keep the blues alive n i will do my bit for us aussie blues lovers regards rooster nsw australia
I have resisted purchasing the BluesGuitar Unleashed package at $137 as I am a left handed player and now there is a further ‘offer’ of Beginers Blues Guitar at $67. Either package should have drawn me in but I have reservations being a ‘lefty’. I telephoned this morning to enquire whether or not the Beginers Blues Guitar pack (or indeed the fuller pack for that matter made provision for ‘lefty’s’). Your ‘colleague’ took my details and suggested you would be approached and (generally) get back fairly soon thereafter. I appreciate that is not the case in business and have therefore ‘missed ou’ t on taking up either offer. I can see that many people have benefited from purchasing the Blues Guitar Unleashed and would like to be one but would like assurance as a ‘lefty’ that it would be relevant or not before proceeding. I have enjoyed your emails for some months now and hope to continue to do so. Kind regards, keep up the fine work for all the right handed players out there at least.
Box 1? I guess I missed that one somehow. I sure would like to get it if you could resend it. The lessons are great though, only I’m really a newbie and it will take me a little longer to put it all together.

Hi Griff, I\\\’ve been playing for about 50 years now and have had to adjust my style of play due to nerve/tendon damage in both hands. I was playing around with modal scales and some eastern (sitar) scales. Never could play blues too well because of the damage to my hands/wrists. However, your e-mail with the four note blues lead has given me a new direction. I am sorry, I can\\\\\\\’t quite afford your DVD\\\\\\\’s right now, but will ASAP. Thank you, and I keep voting for you. Good luck my man.

Hey Griff,
In your Tab example 19-1 for Box 2…is it correct?
Maybe it’s just me, but it looks like some stuff is incorrect between the Fretboard Diagram and the Number Tab.
Thanks for the Lessons
Thanks pal

Hi Griff,
I’ve been playing Guitar since I was 14 Years Old, and Now I’m 61 … I’ve mastered Complex Finger Picking Styles, due to the fact that I play Acoustic/Electric Blues ! But now You are opening my Eyes to a Place where I’ve always wanted to be ! an accomplished Electric Lead Guitar Player, and your Lesson are just Perfect, they have a Great pace and if I apply myself I’ll be just that in NO TIME ! Thanks … My Friend !
JOJO TAYLOR
love your lessons . will be placing an order soon.
Hi Griff;
Although I have been playing for many years I still enjoy going over the basics that you teach. It’s great to see how another musician plays certain chords and scales even though I’m familiar with them. Sometimes you pick up better fingering techniques that you just haven’t thought about before. Anyway, after a very long time of not playing guitar I got back into it about 6 months ago when my nephew showed an interest in guitar playing. I have been showing him things that I know and things that you have been showing as well. It’s amazing how much he has picked up so far. As for me I’m trying to do something I never thought I could before. I’m trying to learn some lead work by the late great Jimi Hendrix and also Eric Clapton by listening to recordings and downloading tableture from the internet. Currently working on "All Along the Watchtower" and really surprising myself. It’s not easy, takes time, but I’m really fulfilling a dream of mine. Thanks to you for helping to keep me inspired and refreshing me with the blues basics. Keep up the great work! You have a great gift for teaching in a very easy going manner. Patience and repitition are the keys to success!! John
Guys… don’t expect Griff to put all the lessons on here for free – this is where he promotes his product… that he sells. It’s his livelihood. He’s very generous with the amount of stuff he gives away for free. But… don’t get greedy.

I enjoy your lessons. I have an old 67 ricky that my uncle gave me and it sounds graet when played right. Thanks for making these lessons available.
Dear Griff, I am not your typical student, I am a 52 year old woman who loves guitar. Always an acoustic player, this is my first time on an electric.
I was diagosed with terminal lung cancer about a year ago. Two years before that I had my lower left lung removed, but even the chemo and radiation hasn’t stopped the cancer which is now in my right lung and inoperable. So being stuck in my cute and cozy apartment I became determined to play lead, blues and your on-line lessons have just been awesome for me. I practice for about 2 hours a day. I feel happy and well, just better, like I’ve really accomplished something. I live on disablity, would you even consider giving me your dvd’s?? It would mean the world to me to learn. I have so many questions about learning the notes on the frets, just making all I have learned from you on-line come together. Please consider it, please. Thank you. Jennifer
Griff,
Mike from Australia here…
Really appreciated these lessons as it is starting to put the scales together where I was getting bored with my playing as everything was sounding too much the same using the various Pentatonic scales in the different keys. This was my problem and not a problem from the lessons as I was trying to get very proficient with the basic pentatonic scales first.
Cheers,
Mike
