This is something we talk about a lot, but it seems to be a common sticking point for people and it’s always worth repeating.

Plus, I usually come at it from a slightly different angle, so every time you hear it from a different perspective – that might the way that works for you 🙂

Thanks Griff, as always. I too learn something every time I watch one of your videos. Your style of teaching really helps me follow. I never quite got the Major- Minor mix comfortably. This helps a lot!

    • Marty Hutchings

Does moving my pinky to the root to get major also work for the root on the first string? You always say to work from the top down for soloing.

    • tony

It`s not cheesy at all it the way it is . I thought that if i were to play the Am scale then the box 2 for the major . You did say that there are many choices but am i correct . Can I do that ? It also seems that it is not A Major but minor . It is that cheesy or what?

    • dougieF

Thanks Griff. Your instruction is greatly appreciated. Happy birthday to you. Make it a great new year 🙏

    • Tim Moran

Not meaning to spoil your birthday…good lesson, I get that the pattern is the same but the root falls on a different place in the pattern, but what happens to the blue notes? I’m guessing that they too fall in different places in the pattern?

      • Randall R Simons

Actually no- they fall in the same place in the pattern. In the minor pentatonic scale that note is the b5 and in the major pentatonic scale that note is the b3.

      • Brian Brickeen

I’m having a little trouble hearing this when I try this out over a jam track, and I think it might be my use of the blue notes (??…I didn’t realize how much I emphasize those until I went through this exercise!) When you are playing the major feel over the 1, is it better to lay off the blue notes and wait until you want the more minor feel (over the 4 & 5) to let them sound out?

    • jack bouckeno

Thanks for the great lesson you made it sound so easy to understand thanks ,and Happy B day..
      Jack

    • kim

Very good and useful. I think (hope) I will be able to apply going back and forth between major and minor AND know what I am doing.

    • Jay

Happy Birthday Griff! There are other guitar teachers who try to teach this with the 3 fret down concept which is not the correct way, the way you teach it is much easier and understandable …Thank you for your videos and your
guitar guidance the last few years …Enjoy your special day!

    • DaveyJoe

Cool! Thanks Griff and Happy Birthday!

Happy Birthday, Griff! October 10th is my birthday too, although I’ve had 24 more of them than you. I’ve got Blues Guitar Unleashed, Classic Rock and Killer Blues Solos, which gives me enough material, along with you videos and blog to keep me going forever! Thanks.

      Hi Griff

      Happy Birthday!
May you know the joy of music, all your days and may you always
have sweet company to share it with. My Mom got really upset when
she had to stop gigging at 83! I feel her loss deeply, two years on.

    • Mark

Hi Griff, Happy birthday and best wishes from the UK. Great to hear this again. I was told this years ago – but took your little m big M to make it clear. I know you you do a course on this too. I have got it too – just need to break thru the packaging!! Thanks for all your work

Good Morning Griff ! Happy Birthday! 🎉🎂🎊 I fall into the same category as Jmaie, I am 67 and since I ordered my first course from you I have been dealing with Cataracts, I have a very difficult time reading text and tabs but I still listen to all your post. Thank you for your great lessons ! 🎸

    • Terry b

Thanks for the lesson and keep bringing them. Happy birthday.

    • Jmaie

Hi Griff, I keep getting your links in my email and I look at a lot of them. I am quite old and I have not had good health, but I keep telling myself when I get better I am going to learn the blues guitar properly. For years I have played along with this and that, but I wnat to be better. The point of this comment is to say, I am not sort of just free loading, I’m telling myself I will do it when I get better, so I keep dipping in to your videos because it gives me something to look forward to one day when I am able to give some time and effort. I suppose that doesn’t make a lot of sense and it doesn’t pay your bills, but I hang onto the idea one day I will help to pay your bills. Working on getting my health back that’s all. I also wish Iwas 50 years younger and I had you for a teacher, life would have been so sweet. Imagine turning up to jam with your pals and playing like you do. Yikes, what a wonder.

    • Chuck

Happy Birthday Griff have a great day
