This is a really great way to just have some fun playing alone or maybe with one other person. I sort of always assumed that most people want to get in to a band or a group at some point, but I’ve realised after many conversations that a lot of you guys just want to be able to play and have some fun with it.
There’s a great side benefit to this also. You really have to take ownership of the beat and the chord changes because you’re doing it all. So grab your guitar and have at it.

I’m really loving the theme/design of your website. Do you ever run into any browser compatibility issues? A small number of my blog readers have complained about my website not working correctly in Explorer but looks great in Opera. Do you have any advice to help fix this issue?
great lesson, but PLEASE cut down on the Talk, Talk,, Talk
I am continually browsing online for tips that can help me. On a scale from 1 to 10, You are an 11. I have been looking everywhere for this! Thanks for sharing your info.
Man what a lesson. I spent at least 15 maybe 20 years playing on the front porch growing up. The very beginning of my playing, there not only playing but learning from my playing. I have to say, there I found myself truly. I get this, and yes it is addictive so I’m printing a business card with your web-sight on it. Yes free advertising. I can’t wait for that first instrument to show up, and what will it be exited isn’t the word for it ecstatic is. Thanks I’ll wear this one out. Thanks my friend.
Dead pent subject matter, thanks for selective information .
[…] common example of the back and forth is what I call “Playing On The Porch” style playing. You’re playing a chord as the call, and a lick as the response. The […]
Hi ,Some thing else to work on and a change of pace. This is helping me become cosistant with practice and playing with others.
Griff,
You are a breath of fresh air for someone who hasn’t “breathed” guitar for 45 years!
I’m 65, now retired and semi-invalid. I needed something to occupy my time in a productive way. I went out and purchased a small amp and a Stratocastor and began to noodle around, as you call it. I quickly became frustrated because arthritis in my left hand makes fretting difficult and I couldn’t hit the cords and notes properly. I was about to return the equipment until I chanced on your free blues lessons and decided to give it a try. I’m glad I did! On the very first lesson I found myself playing along with you! You have the GIFT of teaching! Now, don’t misunderstand me, I still cannot shape my hand to fret and play notes as you do but have been able, through practice, to adapt and play the licks and chords that flow and sound decent. I’ll never be a virtuoso, as you are, but I’m having the time of my life getting into the blues world of music.
Thank you from an old sixties rocker who sold his Stratocastor to get money for a down payment on a house. Too bad, that Stratocastor is now worth more than that old house ever was. Sorry, I’m an old man and I tend to go on a bit.
Thanks Griff.
Dinka dau,
Man, you sound just like me, except you are younger; I’m 72. I just started 4 years ago in a haphazard sort of way. But when I ran across Riffs stuff I bought, just received it and am now excited about his organized approach. I can see this is exactly what I needed. Riff is able to teach theory in a practical way plus emphasizing your individuality which is what da blues is all about. Thx Riff for being so damn good at what you are doing. Keep it up, Riverblues
Hi Griff. I really like the way you present your written material in both Tab and Manuscript (traditional “music” writing). As someone who learned to read music before he learned to read words, that’s such a bonus. I’m loving the lessons too !! Goodonya mate.
Thanks for the lesson Griff skipped my lesson on BGU today couldn’t stop playing around with this lesson
Hi Griff.
I’m playing the right notes…but not necessarily in the right order! NEXT PATIENT!!!! I seem to have too many different tunes from different music. I’ll keep trying and have just one tune.
Griff, I am having two primary challenges to learning to play: 1. Tab, 2. Timimg.
1. TAB: I have attempted to locate a source of explanations for tab symbols. What I came away with from the last attempt at Guitar Center in Phoenix was that these symbols are more or less made up on the fly. That is NO HELP! Is there a source (book, pamphlet or whatever) that explains these symbols?
2. TIMING: Are there exercises designed specifically to improve one’s ability to count time?
In the tab for Lesson 30-“Playing On The Porch”-Part II I see a squiggly symbol to the right of the time (4/4), a bar connecting many of the notes with a 3 above them, a curve below and connecting some notes, a bend symbol (this I understand). I could give many more examples but you get the idea. I really need help here. Also, I really appreciate the video lessons you provide but am going to have to take a rest with them because between these lessons and the Beginning Blues Guitar Unleashed program I am experiencing information overload. Please help!!
Hey Jerry,
I don’t see dates on these comments, so I don’t know who old or new they are. Assuming you haven’t moved on and found your own answers, I’ll try to help out with some of the symbols you’re seeing. Please remember, you asked; and embrace the overload. 🙂
The symbols you asked about are all part of standard notation, they are only shown on the tab to give you a better understanding of the duration of the notes. “Unadorned” tab has no way to indicate time. 🙂
The squiggle is a quarter rest, it indicates you don’t play any notes for one full beat. There are other symbols for rests of different durations.
The bar connecting several notes called a beam, it is a way to join the flags on a group of notes that receive one count. The flag (or absence of it) tells you part of the story about the duration of the note. Look at the left side, directly above the standard notation stave and you’ll see what two eighth notes with a beam, a quarter note (no flag) and an eighth note (one) flag all look like.
The 3 above a group of notes indicates that those notes are played as a triplet. The most common triplet in these exercises is three eighth notes played in one count (the same amount of time you would normally play once quarter note or two eighth notes). There are a couple examples with four notes played as a triplet; that sounds strange, but in those cases first two notes have a double flag, so they are sixteenth notes. And two sixteenths are the same as one eighth.
The curved line connecting two notes indicates the notes are played without a break between them. When two notes of the same pitch are connected, it’s called a tie. The tie at the end of the turnaround is an example of that.
When notes of two different pitches are connected, it’s called a slur; but there still is no break between the notes. These slurs are probably a slide, a hammer on or a pull off. Could also be a bend (or release) into the second note, but I don’t think he’s doing that here.
It is great that you want to understand these symbols, but to really do that you need to learn more about standard notion, because that’s where these symbols come from. There are online resources that explain standard notation and those might be good enough the get answers to your immediate questions… Best of luck!
Griff. Thanks for this. A bit of a sunshine in the morning picking up a free lesson from . You have a great energy and it’s just wonderful that you take the time to share your talent with the world’s guitarist community to improve the playing capability of all. Many thanks
Jean / Canada
I’ve said it before – I’ll say it again. Griff you are one heck of a teacher
This is brilliant stuff as I don’t play in a band & just tend to ‘noodle’ around. This gives me a framework to practice the stuff I’ve learnt from your course BGU (which incidentally is a ‘must’ for all you aspiring blues players). Thank you Griff. Thanks a lot.
Griff, You’re a hammer. I’m a rusty nail. You keep pounding and gradually with little taps to straighten me up, finally set the nail head.
I’ve been resisting this whole “counting thing” because it takes a load of work, to read the notes or tabs, relay the symbols into strings and sounds and then count all at the same time.
But by golly it finally sunk in on this revisited lesson.
Perhaps you should have just started with a bigger hammer? (Just kidding)
Thanks Amigo!
Happy holidays!
Fantastic lesson Griff … Now I can start putting together that little blues number I’ve wanted to do for sooo long !!! THANKS …
love the blues.limited to what I can play (beginner).but I learned a lot in the last couple of days.need to dedicate more time to it.thank you so much griff. jake
Thank you Griff, for all of your great teachings.
I would like to wish you and all your family a merry christmass&new year.
You have helped me alot,& hopeing to see more of you in the new year.
Best regards from desa
Sometimes the nice, simple pieces are right on our backyard. Yet we do not pay much attention . Thanks for bringing this back.I really enjoyed it and I want to spend some time playing it.
wow it’s been a whole year since you did this video. It was one of the lessons i liked on BGU DVD. this also got me going on playing it in differant keys. plus i improvised some of my own licks. can’t believe i’ve been with you Griff for more than almost 2 years. is your band to good to play the Light House in Mnahattan beach? i’d be there with my axe begging to join in on a tune.lol. happy holidays to you and family, Paul.
Thanks I can visualize hangin on the backporch doing this.
GRIFF LOVE THIS, IT SOUNDS A LOT LIKE TITO & TARANTULA SONG, AFTER DARK COULD YOU DO A PLAYING ON THE PORCH, ON THAT SOUND OF SONG OR THAT SONG AFTER DARK, SALMA HAYEK IS SO GOOD IN THAT PART OF THE MOVIE.
love Salma Hayek.
That tone! Loved it. Can you share that. I’m always searching for that perfect tone. Thanks
thanks again for another great lesson.
Griff
I have this lesson from a previous course from you…This gave me a chance to review it again…What a great way to noodle by myself in the basement alongside my cat!
I am going to make some copies to pass out to my guitar club buddies. Every who wants to can take a small solo…You are one of the greatest teachers out there my friend! All the best of the holiday season to all your subscribers…..and the best to you and your family!
Thanks Griff, I watched the video all the way through, went and grabbed my favorite guitar and played along with you the second time. I don’t have it down perfectly yet but with practice I will have it but not as good as the Master. Thanks again for a great lesson.
Hi, i reflect that i maxim you visited my weblog so i came to “return the want”.I’m frustrating to to find issues to enhance my website!I suppose its tolerable to manipulate a few of your concepts!!
I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog and was wondering what all is required to
get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would cost a pretty penny?
I’m not very internet smart so I’m not 100% positive.
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Great lesson.thanks for this now I know what to do next. Thanks a heep.
I learned everything in reverse. Till I found you. I recognized early on that the players I loved knew where they were in the count and progression. I had an impossible time trying to work that out by copying what I heard. You hooked me up…..boom you are the bomb. A million thanks don’t even come close.
great job you make it all look so easy,, so thanks again for putting it all together ((( you a good teacher)))Smile)))
Thanks Griff! This is just what I needed! Kevin Ireland
Hi Griff–I don’t know if I’m logged in or logged out–whenever I see a lesson in my Gmail
or any remarks or suggestions I read them or play them/ I am happy to have something new to practice/ I sent for the Beginning Blues Guitar–Manual some years ago and refer to it a LOT! since I am the only guitar person in my household I want to thank you for entering the material and prompting much needed practice around here!…..Jean
Simple but effective also keeps you interested at the same time, like it cheers
Rod————–Can’t-wait-to-get-started.It-sounds-like-I’ll-actually-know-a-tune.Grate-video!
this is very helpful for me because it is not that hard to learn
my right index finger is missing due to a mining accident back in 60s
so it restricts me slightly.
Thanks a lot Griff. Very useful vid! Keep up the good work!
Tony
Just Awesome!!!
Very cool, you just answered one of my burning “what is he doing there” questions.
I hate to be a dunce, but I hope your DVD’s are dumbed down even further and slower for people like me. I am old, slow, and uncoordinated. It looks good, and impossible for me. I have no skill.
Great stuff I’m trying just waiting for DVDs
Thanks Griff, as a beginner I really enjoy the lessons and you make it so much easier to play and understand. I too am old and slow but playing along gives me some of my youth back.
Thanks, Griff! I’m “old and slow” but you always inspire me to keep trying. You guys make my day! Bring it on.
Hi Grif,
I really like these short riffs. As I don’t have a lot of time and a short attention span.
Thanks and please keep them coming.
Yet another really good lesson Griff. I just recently discovered your on-line lessons and I’m duly impressed and appreciative.
Btw, I practice ij the dark.
I really like things like this. Learn, practice, learn some more as you’re doing.
Timing, tools, scales…Timing, tools, scales…Timing ,tools, scales…There’s no place like Home!
Great Lesson!
nice Griff that is the kind of licks i like but i think i need to learn more scales. i don’t have much time to practice but trying to get as much in as i can in so please keep up the lessons so i can fallow along thanks a gain griff
Make it all seem so simple. Brilliant !
thank’s griff
hi griff you make things so simple and easy to follow Im coming out of the fog
I cant believe Ive found this so mystical thankyou
alan
Looks great and somewhat easy to try. Very nice. I still enjoyed it even though I am not into electrical guitar. I own an acoustic one.
That was awsome griff i can’t wait till i get to that level of playing thanks krabb or Kevin..
Thanks for the free video.I do appreciate.God bless you exceedingly
Tanks Griff
This vas great
Thanx bud for the free lessons as i have just been made redundant n cant afford the lessons xx cheers dude.. Thanxagain mate x
I’ve been playing for a while but never got this style of playing down, finding this lesson very useful. I’m thinking you could create a whole entire group of lessons (Called playing on the porch) taking us from beginner thru some advanced stuff. That would be awesome!!!! No pressure, haha
Thanks Griff
P.S. Just purchased your Blues Guitar Unleashed course and having a blast with it.
I’ve played for a long time but it’s amazing how many simple things one misses and how many different ways there are of playing the same riff. Thanks, Griff. You make it so simple.
Great lesson, with practice, I will get this lick down.
Thanks Griff just a beginner tryn real hard Kenny J
Hi Griff, I am complete novice. I have recently started learning since I have been looking at your well presented bite size lessons I got my Epi Sheraton out of the closet where it had been for ten years, tuned it and fell in love with it all over again. Thanks for that. I also own an Artisan elec/acoustic which an old guy gave me for helping him out. I find myself playing this one the most. Does anyone know anything about Artisan? I’ve never heard of them but its a lovely guitar
It is very nice blue lead lesson, I will practice when I find the time this week.
Thank you so much.
Dang
i find the lessons best if i watch first then watch and try some with sucsess some not but i will keep at it i find doing single notes harder than doing whole chords
sharon
Very nice lesson, thank you very much.
I will practice this this weekend. Really cool and Thanks Griff !
Thank you this makes since. I’ve been playing for 25 years and have found it easy to get lost by myself without the band feel the chord change thing. I hate to count but it keeps everything tight and right. I will practice till my foot tapping is sufficient.
Sorry to bothe you with this, I tried to download this video and it lands as a .mp4 file, which is an error as it does not play with any media, in the past all your videos come as .flv
This stuff is really great for a beginner at blues. I’ve played guitar for thirty years and can’t read a note of music but these lessons are proving to be a lot of fun. They provide a simple, structured approach to learning and I like it very much.
Don James
I just love the way you teach.
What a teacher ! Everything is becoming so clear !
Griff, I am enjoying the Back Porch I video and TABs. Actually I am practicing that lesson while sitting on the back porch of our log cabin in the NC Blueridge Mountains on a flawless Sunday morning. Thanks for the lesson. Larry
good stuff ill give it a try, maybe this will put some fun into practice.
I’m trying Griff I’m trying !!!!!!:-)
Hey I’m trying Griff I’m trying…:-)
Thanks Griff. I got a lot out your explanation and I appreciate you tying it together into a song or instrumental piece. I don’t do very well just learning licks and this really advances my playing.
Great idea, fun too. thanks.
I don’t have anything constructive to say. Its just I wish you had been around 30 years ago but then I guess my typewriter wouldn’t have picked you up. But I was lucky enough to go to the Newport Folk festival and watch Mississippi John Hurt, Muddy Waters and the boys play.
Thanks,
Kurt
Love this! Thank you for counting. It makes or breaks good playing! Just received the Blues Unleashed DVDs. I know what I’m doing this weekend.
I just had to reply again. You said to mix them up, change them around etc.. Playing on the porch made me think. I see an old man step out onto his worn out porch on his run down house. It’s already 90 degrees at 10:00 am. He sets in his old rocker and pets his dog. He reaches around and grabs an old beat up six string with strings as old as I am. I see him gently rock back and forth while his right foot begins to gently tap in time. He plays this little lick in a slow and steady hand. With that vision in my head, I began to play the lick with NO problems. It’s not as fast as you play it, but I see the old man pick the strings at his own slow and steady pace. To me it has that old school delta blues style. I believe that is what they refer to as voicing. My style isn’t like the video, but I really dig the way you can play anything in whatever style you like. I have your unleashed lesson set, but have rarely used it yet. You keep sending out these little bit’s and I’ll mess around with them for quite awhile. I like to take what you teach and keep playing it adding a note here, changing a note there, add some vibrato or even leave a little piece out and add another. What I am saying is that you have not only taught, but inspired me to play something with a bit of myself in it. No other lesson set or books have ever done that. Will I be composing my own music and be the front man in a band anytime soon, NO. But I will be sitting on my back porch playing the crap out of something. Maybe even have a friend or two over to jam. Thank you VERY much, and keep sending me these little treats. It really is the best way to learn. And don’t worry that I haven’t got into your lesson set. I will get to it, but I’m having too much fun with your little videos lessons. Again Thank You Very,Very Much. My Strat would be in a closet by now if it weren’t for you. Dave
Great little piece for us beginners. Mostly, for me, when something is so easy, I tend to over complicate it. The rests at the beginning, and the triplets, kinda messed with my head. I had to watch the video clip several times before I had my Ah Ha moment. There’s always more than one way to count beats in a bar. The triplets had me stumped for awhile. Once I figured it out I was playing it repeatedly. It sounds great on an acoustic. A little video dedicated on how to construct chords would be great. Right now I have to resort to my cheat sheet. Keep sending out these simple little gems. It makes us beginners feel better when we can play something after a short lesson.
love it, love it…you are beyond a doubt one of the best teachers ive seen yet Griff. keep sendin them out
Very nice. I’m just a beginner, and this is a great help. Please keep up the great lessons!
Hey griff, really enjoyable, im on the porch most nights so this will be very helpful. and sounds great, . I dont always get stuff straight off but your presentation makes everything seem attainable. many thanks. H
Thanks Griff
Often wondered how to get the timing right with practice I’m beginning to nail it
Thank you.
Hi Griff,
This latest video really shows what can be done with only a little practice.
Thank you.
Hi,
Great stuff – BUT – please don’t count over ALL the riffs. I found them difficult to hear them.
And maybe play it all through without the talking!
I’ll be coming back for more, though!
enjoying it so far thank you
great lesson thanks
Great lesson Griff me simple but very informative helps a lot hope to see more in the future thanks
Thanks Griff… I really think you might be taking over Marty’s place.. Please don’t tell Martinoffsky
Thanks Griff, that’s really useful.
Great stuff Griff I have a lot of your cds but time an place I always have a computer this is great . Only thing better is living in this 40 foot motor home. I get to go to the jams at some of the parks I camp at abit more country than I am use to but good. Thanks a lot Griff
Yer Da Man griff! Thanks so much!
This stuff is really cool! I like the way you lay everything out in a logical manner. I have
learned a lot in the short time I have been following your videos. Keep it up! It really does
work!!
Frank
I once again enjoyed your lesson. You explain your thought process very well to those of us that require same. Thank you.
REALY GOOD STUFF!! COOL… Moe
Great stuff I hope to get that good
Yet another great season from you. It is fun after struggling to try and understand how things come together. You give a great mix of theory and easy combinations. Thanks for your help!
This just keeps on getting better. Thanks, Ray
PS, will be getting the DVD course as soon as I see the wife smiling!!! Tip, don’t start holding your breath just YET, you ain’t seen my wife!!! Bless Er.

Thanks for a great lesson.
After nearly 15 years I’m starting to see the light at last the door has been opened.
After nearly 15 years I’m starting to see the light. At l
A great intro to lead playing. I love the way you break it down into small parts for ease of learning then we can add to it as we progress. Another great lesson. Thanks PLEASE keep them coming.
Many thank from Glenn from Aus
This is really great. For me, I have to note the finger positions on tabulature paper as my memory is not the best. I will be working on this lesson until I get it right. Many thanks.
Really enjoying this..Only ever been a drummer and a strummer and had given up hope of playing lead but just maybe……
Cheers
Gliderer
Im used to saying”I cant play the guitar,i just muck about.”With your tuition i would like to change this saying to”Yeah i can play, have a listen to this. Thanks Griff.
Great lessons griff these blues riffs really help me expand my guitar playing can’t wait for some more will be buying your dvd keep it coming thanks griff
Play it first!
VERY HELPFUL FOR ME WITH BLUES ERROL
Griff, These are excellent mini-lessons to add incentive to the more rigorous task of learning theory and practicing scales etc. It is always part of my finishing -up time to pick a melody or strum a favorite (and easy) tune so I feel like I am really playing. I am happy to say I am improving and playing is becoming more intuitive.
thanks Griff,
had formal lessons but couldn’t get get to grips yet within I hour I can see the way forward. Have just picked up my guitar again after far too long and am really enjoying being able to make progress.
Very good stuff. Wonderful to follow and learn. I work on riffs and licks everyday and it is always great to watch somebody else play and pick up what they are teaching. I love guitar and probably will be playing for the rest of my life. A year from now I would like to be playing out someplace so these lessons are invaluable.
Saw Santana last night. I continually fantasize about playing “Europa” one night in public, sitting on a stool with the lights on me. What a kick that would be……Paul
Fantastic! thanks Griff. This is a great exercise, I am a lone player interested in Delta Blues, this gives me so much to explore and develop.
Griff,
listening to “playing on the porch part one” is cool and fun to play along with.
I thank you for that.
please keep ’em coming.
jimmyrs
What a great simply set of licks that can be changed to suit the players ear.
Your video teaching techniques is second to none!!
Keep these slow and simple examples coming…
I have a grand daughter that wants to learn to play the guitar and when I received your Web Site
I really think this will keep her interest and maybe make her a Guitar Player.
I’m a begening Bass player and wish I could find something like your lesson for Bass.
I willl be ordering your package in the near future.
ed.
Hey!!
I’m a “One day i will be a” Guitar player, currently been playing Drums for 35 yrs, Guitar is my favorite Melodic instrument. I knock around a dozen chords or so, got a lotta stuf from OLGA B4 their demise. Was at an impass when it came to scales, runs, ets..(you know, the soloist stuff) I have a great ear, so, I started fooling around with these lessons, and though I don’t get to them as oft as I would, THEY ARE GREAT!! I can hear that within a relatively appreciable time frame(More Practice) I’ll be doin’ the darn thing. The stuff sounds like the video!!!!!
Most sincere thanks!!!!
Zoo!
Griff I don’t know where to start. You see you are on my bucket list. I’ve always had a guitar but I never learned to play it. I was in a motorcycle accident when I was 14 years old and I broke my back and became a paraplegic. I was what a very athletic person and loved sports until I couldn’t do them anymore. I am now 61yrs old and I have diabetes and glaucoma and kidney disease. I am on dialysis. I really can’t do too much but I made myself a promise that I would learn to play guitar before I passed and when I came across your site. I was drawn to it. I don’t know why but I started looking into it and I was hooked. Finally, I didn’t have to learn to read music. I just wanted to play and sing to myself and family. I looked at one of your videos the 4 note one. I loved it. I said I’m going to do it and here I am now awaiting the videos to come in the mail. I went and bought myself a new set of Martin extra lights…My old strings were about 40 yrs old and rusted. I had my guitar tuned up and it sounded terrible. Probably because of the warps and cracks in it. My family said it I learned to play it within a year they would buy me new one. I told them we had a bet and now I am concetrating on your 4 note exercise. Wish me luck cause I am going to be around for one more year I hope! Praise to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Here goes nothing.. I will try to keep you informed on my progress. Thanks Bobby G….bobbygbelieves@gmail.com
Hi Griff a nice step like you said everyone dosnt play in a band ,those licks simple but its the way you put them together I just love everthing you do because it is so workable like you said move licks .
Hi Griff
Great stuff keep up the good work, realy good lesson
Hey Griff
Cool, man. Learned quite a bit from all your videos. Thanks
Larry from Singapore
great stuff, have you considered teaching some Hendrix stuff, he was THE bluesmaster of all time
Hey Griff,
Man, I’m lovin’ the emails I’ve been receiving from you!! My blues playing has gone crazy in just a few days of practicing along with you!! I’m gonna keep working and plan to purchase the full monty as soon as I can come up with the funds!!
RIcky .
Great lesson Griff. Sounds nice. Will try it. Thank you 🙂
Griff,
A blues technique that continues to be difficult for me is to create a solid vibrato when I want it. Could you give us some guidance on the physical aspect, the “how-to” of the technique, please?
Mark Schneider
great lesson griff thanks
Hey Griff, really liked those 5 lick runs. Ill be starting on those today. On the porch, In the Mountains of Blue Ridge
This was the first video besides you first 4 note lesson that I have been able to download.
I sure hope you never run out on us look forward to your lessons.
Griff, what youre doing is admirable and awesome for the musical youth out there. music makes the world go round anyway and giving of yourself to help give that gift and expression to someone who really needs “the music” to feel and be part if that world, is truly an awesome feeling in it self. one teacher to another, youve answered one of many callings to come G, and very well i might say. Thanks cdbaby.com/cd/davidwayne
love your lessons i’m not a teacher i don’t have the temperment
Thank you for finally sending me a video I can watch in real time, without delays in the vocal.
I can not get the lessons
I’m a self taughter , Play by ear mostly. I have for 40 yrs.now. I’m am a fairly accomplished player, but never really played while thinking (” a one and two and “) that would seem to confuse me. However my first instrument was drums though, maybe that has something to do with it. I can keep a beat in my head better without doing that. Just saying.
thank you..very understandable and useful . Sounds like something I could practice and as soon as it becomes natural and effortless, i can play it add to it and allow my mind to travel at the same time..Your style of teaching seems personal and very easy and thorogh to retain. Thanks again for allowing me to participate.
GH
Griff ,

Thanks for this video. I am having lots of fun playing around doing different things with these licks of yours. They also sound really good played at the 12th fret pentatonic box.
Great work. Thank you
CheersEric
I really like your lessons and starting to save money to buy your DVD’s. I’m a beginner and have found myself playing really well just using your free videos.
To Gabe,
keep your dumb comments to yourself! If you don’t like the way he teaches than find someone else, there are hundreds of people on the internet you can pick from but don’t knock someone that is willing to spend his time to record and post all of his knowledge for free
Yeah, have found your site to very informative, I am just a beginner but have printed the TAB out to just try it in between practice sessions Thanks once again for the video..
WADR do you realize that you talk the entire time?
You seriously have to cut your words by 2/3. It’s far too distracting to learn something with a constant drumbeat of words. Let the music speak for itself. Better closeups in 1/4 time woulbe de extremely helpful as opposed to so much talk.
THANKS!!! This is what I needed. Just a few things at a time, and fun to play. I’m a porch player. I really enjoy playing guitar. I love the sound and feel of a good guitrar. Sometimes I would love to be an accomplished guitarist, but that’s so-oo-o far away from me right now, since “accomplished” means SRV, Benson, Matt Schofield, BB, etc. Your lessons make it easier to enjoy this beautiful instrument. I really appreciate what you do. Thankyou so much.
Your short videos are great ! They give a lot of success for a little effort ! Makes me want to play more !! Keep it up and I’ll have to get the “complete set” !!
I just have to say a “big” Thanks for taking the time to explain how to play the licks for blues.I have always wanted to play solo licks for blues, but i never could find that “one” instructor who totally understands what the player needs to do in order for the “real” thing to happen.Keep ur great lessons coming..I LOVE IT>>>>>>
thanks Griff cool lesson has this been tab’d out
Really good, have learned a lot from these lessons.can,t wait to get one of the courses. Try playing these licks at the 12th fret, sound pretty good.(at least to me anyway!). cheers Griff you’re a star.
Thanks Griff. These free lessons are a great! I basically play for self gratification and have learned sooo much in the past 2 weeks. Your teaching method is just perfect!
That is so good, I like it but I need acoustic lesson please.
WOW! I’m actually getting compliments from my wife about how good I sound. Keep up the great tips and I know I’ll keep playing!
supreb griff loved it

Another great lesson. Cheers!

Griff: Thats Fantastic.Grate licks.Just to cool.
Fantastic lessons!!!
hi griff, im in the very basics of guitar and never attempted the blues. dont know any theory and didnt expect to be capable or enjoy playing as much as i have the last 2 days. got to say! brilliant teaching and i hope to learn much more. “good stuff mate” thankyou veeery much!!
HI,
I realy like what i have seen from the e-mails you have sent and i am thinking about getting your lessons. I don’t know if it would be good for someone like who knows nothing about music or playing any instrument. I am 56 years old and i had major heart attack, which is what got me started looking for activities that i could do that would be relaxing and fun.
what i would like to know, do i need to learn some basics first before i get your lesson plan.
been playing since 6 years old 1969 … love your lessons
These lessons are amazing.
thanks once agin
I’ve been playing the guitar since about the age of 12. I’m now nearly 67 and am still only very average, if that. These are the best lessons I’ve seen. They are real easy to follow and when you start putting some of your licks together they make me sound like a professional and like I know what I’m doing (instead of just busking). If only I’d followed the advice I give youngsters who I meet who are learning to play, I’d be an Albert Lee, Vince Gill or Dave Edmunds by now ( instead of a very poor imitation of Hank Marvin). That advice is, if you can only discipline yourself to sit down and practice for 20 minutes a day within three months your playing abilities will be transformed and you won’t recognise yourself.
Thank you for these great lessons and clips
Dude,
I’ma been strumming for so long and doing things like pinball wizard, Yes and a blend of “oldies”
Facinated as i’ve been by blues your little rest has caused a BIG AHAAAA
I wish to thank you for the donation and will be sure to follow you about…
Good introduction to blues for the person that doesn’t quite know they can follow their own beat
Fantastic.. this is just what i need
Many thanks for your helpfull lessons. Special one of 3 Note Solo.

hi Griff
many thanks for your helpfull lessons,i really like blues guitar, but i couldnt find a good blues teacher,so i sometimes use your blues lessons.
I can play but I am learning tabs never did before the stuff you teach is great , I love to add it to the rest of what I am learning , thanks .
What a great lesson, all these by Griff have been very helpful for someone who is learning, they are fun and broken down so that the order makes sense unlike many other websites, thank you this is a lot of fun
Griff,
I have been struggling to learn how to play for some time. I’ve learned bits and pieces along the way but could never put anything together. This is exactly what I am looking for, something I can play alone and build on. I also have the blues guitar unleashed DVD’s and have learned a lot from them as well. I am finally making some progress! Thanks, Kris
This one is great I hate using a pick so this was up my street THANKS John Lee
I think the lessons are great and very encouraging, and will put in an order for unleashed
in the near future….Loving the Blues …..Ann
“Told you an hour ago I was ordering unleashed. Just finished doing that… Can’t wait for it to get here.” sixty year old former drummer, disabling back injury. I was looking for something to fill my days. I think I just found it… Picked up the guitar six months ago, had been taking some lessons from a kid that could play, but not teach. Hope this takes me beyond that. Looking forward to getting started!
Thank’s, David
Best lessons I’ve seen so far. Will be ordering unleashed… Love the BLUES!!!
really good lesson. I play at church and have a hard time placing my capo in the right place, Can you help me out a little.
Thanks
good stuff, but could you please play it at least a couple times without counting? it makes it difficult to hear the actual music, particularly with starting on a 2. can’t play what can’t hear or understand. thx
Hey Griff,
Once again a great lesson–Thanks again !!!!
Sincerely,
Spencer
The best teacher ever. Thanks You saved my life.I WILL play the Blues before I die
THANK YOU SIR
Hi Griff,
Thank you for the helpfull lessons. It is a well integrated approach and it is rewarding to see the progress that is being made following your approach. I especially enjoyed this lesson.
Thanka again and I hope you are getting over your cold.
Ed
I’ve been playing for a long time, but i am picking up some cool stuff from you—thanks
I’ve been playing blues for a long time….not a well as you’ve shown me I can I might add. Thought I knew alot after 40 years. I am going to buy your deal, start at the beginning and have a big time doing it. I can’t wait to see what the results are! Also going to suggest my jam partners get on board. Thanks for being there, man,
That was great I have a great Porch for that kind of stuff.
Griff,
Thanks. I did enjoy the “Porch” lesson, this is exactly what I need. I am looking forward to fool around with it.
Jan P.
I watch this instuction video over and over and I pick up new stuff every time. This has expanded my songwriting and guitar playing. I know after some practice i can be as good as I can be. Thanks from the bottom of my “bluesy” heart!
Thanks again Griff !! I certainitly hope all the other players appreciate it this as much as i do!!! Peace.
Thank you for the chord and lick pattern. It is just what i need to create a rythm flow for my transitions from chords to licks.
Un gros merci!
Nice, Very nice. Most excellent breakdown of Blues guitar I have ever come across. Thank you, thank you, thank you! You clarified more things for me in 13 minutes than all the books, CD’s and other How-2 guides than I spent a small fortune on. AWESOMNESS!
I realy love the way you use the tabs to help us who have never played guitar before thanks for your help me and thanks for the free lessons whichhelps me a lot now that i dont work any more through disabilitys thanks again for these free lessons your the best
Great lesson,
I love the way you teach and explain things. You’re so much more natural, believable and come across as a generally nice guy without the hype and ego of the other 6 or so guitar teachers i follow.
Thanks again.
Regards
Warren
Thanks for yet another installment of endless fun for me to learn. This will take months to learn and a lifetime to master! I read the comments of several older guitar students and I want to share some of my experiences with them. In my younger days I played with the guitar and even had some success playing on stage. It seemed to come easy and fast, and I thought I was pretty good. I could mimic other guitarists work and play loud and fast. I did not know then, but my playing lacked soul and it did not inspire the deep seated satisfaction that I enjoy today from learning the seemingly simple music of the blues. I put down the guitar for 25 years but now I enjoy learning it all over again and enjoying it more than ever! Now that I am learning to play the guitar instead of playing with it!
sorry that was a typo it was ment to be swing notes
Rick
Hello Griff
Q : in this lesson, is this what is called sing notes?
Rick
Hey Griff – Great stuff! Sounds cool too! The only person I ever play with is my dad and he loves E…so now I’ll have something to impress him with!
Real nice style and design and great content material , nothing at all else we want : D.
Awesome dude!!! That is just what I’ve been after, thanks man. You rock!
Where was the internet and you twenty years ago? By now I’d be making a living at this. Never too late? Perhaps. (gotta get your dvds soon)
yes i thought it took me along, and showed me the light at the of the tunnel.
Thank Friff You are a wonderful teacher, Thanks again,
Take Care,
Doug G.
Great lesson Griff, You are a wonderful Teacher. thanks So Much Doug G.

Griff, I’m one of the many who never followed through playing the guitar. I took lessons when I was young and always had a guitar lying around collecting dust. You have made it easy to learn… Thanks Great Job. Brian
Thank you so much Griff, you make everything more intresting and easy in learning,im 60yrs now
love the blues&jazz funk. Thanks for your teaching.
Thanks Griff,
I had to write to you and let you know that i do enjoy learning everything you have been sending to me. Iv’e been having this fear that if you dont see any activity from me you will stop sending me stuff. I just started lessons a couple weeks ago. I am 46 years old and have always had a guitar I just never followed through with it. You make it easy and interesting for anyone. I like my music teacher and as soon as it is possible I will be sending away for your cd’s and dvd coarse. That way I wont have to keep bouncing through my e-mails. I am looking forward to that day.Keep up the good work and thankyou for your efforts. Dana
Very easy to learn and look forward to your emails. You are truly a great teacher.
Hi Griff,
I really love you way of teaching ‘coz you are very patient. I am 56 yrs old now still trying to learn since I was in high school. I was discouraged by people who teaches not from the hear before. But now i got interested because it is easy to learn from your teachings. So keep up and may the Lord bless you.
thank you for your emails.
erwin
Hello Griff;
Just love the “Back Porch Picking” lesson. It’s a great variation of what I’ve been doing for years. Normally I barre it in B,C or D but it is the one thing I can do well. Open strings add a whole new avenue to explore. Having a limited vocal range in the above keys has kind of limited me. Not all of us can sing and I just have to accept that.
Your teaching style even makes learning easy. (even for an old guy) I love the “you can do this” lessons opposed to the “LOOK WHAT (“I”) CAN DO” I got from my local teacher.
-Paul
Griff,
I was looking at three different blues courses when I found yours. While practicing my Blues Guitar Unleashed last week I was thinking back to the other courses I had been considering and wondering to myself how I had chosen yours (they weren’t bad courses, and also by respectable guys just like yourself). When I get this kind of content in my email my reasoning speaks for itself. Nothing but respect for you and your ability as a guitarist and teacher. Thank You, I am loving playing my guitars again after 10 years of them sitting in the corner gathering dust.
Griff
Just want to thank you for your help and intrest, like most people who have a job and family life It’s hard for me to find the time for practice. So if you would stick with me I will look forward to dealing with you in the future.
Love this .Great on the box guitar. There’s enough here to work on for months. You’re making retirement that much more fun. Can’t thank you enough Giff…:o)
Another inspiring moment everytime you sent a lesson, can’t wait to have
your Bluesguitarunleased DVD’s.Great Stuff I really, really want to learn how to play
licks and riffs especially. Thanks agaim Griff. Great Stuff !
that was cool bro simple but an effective way to practice rythm , lead and timming all at once while haveing fun . and sometimes showing off lol . thanx griff
Hi Griff, i think what you learn people is an excellent way to teach, i have a long long way to go, but these lessons have been invaluable. This is such a simple, easy way of learning, dont get me wrong , initially i thought, i’m never going to do that, its to complcated, but you broke it down into easy lessons, and now im on my way. by the way i am a 58 year old grandmother, and my kids think im mad, but its something i’ve always wanted to do, and with your help, im sure i’l get there with some hard work and lots of fun along the way. Many thanks for your time Griff, really appreciated.
well i must tell you a story first .met a guitar teacher going to a univerisity to get his masters in music .i needed a lead guitarist in my band so i asked him to join us one night . this guy had absolutly no idea how to play the 12 bar blues . i gave him a quick example an he said he could now play 3000 new songs . what the hell did they teach him in college anyway. anyhow i enjoyed this portion of the teaching and it provided me with some greater knowledge of how to play more linking cords and notes better thanks
one the second lick ur ending on a e and not mentioning. so for a bit i believed u where ending on that a note 2f 3st, but u are going up to the e, with no mention that that is in the note pattern
ITS GREAT WHEN YOU CAN HEAR SOMETHING AND BE ABLE TO PLAY IT AND FINALLY ITS ALL COMMING TOGETHER BUT THE MAIN THING THAT HELPS ME IS EVERYOTHER DAY GOING BACK OVER PAST LESSONS AND IVE REALLY THOUGHT THE FOUR NOTE SOLO WAS COOL
GREAT STUFF YOUR INTERNET STUFF GOES GREAT WITH YOUR DVD COURSE THIS WAS FUN TO PLAY SRV SOUNDING SORTA
Thanks, Griff! More great stuff from you. A lot of us are singers and songwriters who want to be able to accompany ourselves in a professional manner. You are helping immensely!
Hi Griff,
I have ordered but not yet received the lessons, understandably as I am in Australia I have to be patient, but can’t wait to get to it. If the lessons are as easy to learn as the video lessons via email, then I will be another satisfied student of the blues. Keep it up,
Cheers,
Les
great lessons sounds like old miss blues great work keep it up for all of the aspiring -players
Hi Griff, thanks for the video lesson. It is really inspiring to listen and watch how simple you make it to learn new stuff. I can play rhythm quite well and play in a gigging band but always struggled with lead riffs, I think I try to do too much and your lessons have made me realise it’s not as difficult as I believed. Many thanks.
Hello Griff so far so good played by ear for many years had carpal tunnel surgery an just lost interest started back practicing again been following a few dvds i bought then stumble on your course an it is working well for me after 40 yrs stiff hands an fingers its coming along thanks for information you put on line. Have a great day
Thankyou Griff, with the attention span of a goldfish,I locked to your course with enthusiasm.I am not a lead guitarist but I tried a few licks and wow ! it works.Thankyou again for your easy delivery of words. My Gibson Black Beauty sits in her case as I am unable to do her justice, but you’ve given me hope.Thankyou again
Dang Griff!! You have developed the BEST teaching method yet!
Hi Griff, I purchased and got your Blues Guitar Unleashed this last week and I think it’s really great…
Thank you, Gary
Good Stuff
WOW, between learning Sitting -easy-blues, fullout blues, Muddy A blues, and now this, I am a busy student. These are great lessons. I guess that is because I am so new at the Blues. I realy enjow the learning process. Thanks, Mike
Wow! I am 72 years old and just got lucky. I ran across one of your videos and was hooked immediately. And guess what, I am playing the blues!!!!!!!
Thanks Griff you are my MAN,
Duke
This comes at the right time. Thanks, It is nice to be able to put something together without having to get someone else to come play.
you were born to teach and play great job.
Griff, I purchased two electric guitars for my two boys aged 12 & 41 which I hoped that they would learn to play. But sorry to say they lost interest real quick, So I started to learn to play and at 50 years of age that isnt easy.
I have only been practising for about 4 months and just recently ordered your beginner blues DVD and Blues guitar unleashed as well. I would like to say thanks for your free lessons you have been emailing me which inspired me to purchase your beginner Blues DVD set.
I also wish to compliment you on the ease of “Playing on the porch” part 1 after printing of the tab notes, I can say that I have the picking down pat within 1 hour of practising it. Now I only have to get the beat correct and it will all come together.
Once again keep up the great work as you are making playing the guitar a whole lot easier.
This is great! Thanks for the tip on counting. The whole exercise is easy and constructive. Will be practicing a lot with this. In one word, “inspiring”. Thanks again.
this was awesome, ive been trying to figure how to combine chord strum and blues licks,,, and I have discovered my biggest issues are changing up the timing, the ” and ” as well as the ” and a” for counting makes a difference of when i can play. I never thought about giving myself a beet rest, to get back to my start point, of the strum. very nice lesson
thanks
Oops…sorry, never mind I see the link above…..
Griff….this is great….can I get the tabs for “on the porch”?
Thanks you for the time youput into these…what a gem. I am a beginner guitarist (I can barely even call myself that) but these short lessons give me such hope. I totally enjoy them and aspire to play them half as good as you do some day! Thaks for keeping it simple and really enjoyable!
[…] expelled it’s renouned “Playing On The Porch” acoustic blues guitar doctrine during http://bluesguitarunleashed.com/playing-on-the-porch-part-i/. This simple, easy to learn blues doctrine is openly accessible and dictated to be really easy to […]
your the coolest.. as a teen i fooled with power chords.. now i like playing on the porch segment of your corse…thanks man…
Thanks man for your generous spirit! If the paintings ever get selling again, what amI saying?!!! I mean when the paintings get selling again I’ll definitely buy your course. Excellent teaching, I’m going to promo you whenever possible.

“I am just a poor boy so my story’s seldom told…”
Hey Griff, I can’t thank you enough for these free teaser lessons. I truly wish I could afford to purchase your course right now as your special Unfortunately Ends tonight, and thats a real bummer. but no matter, as soon as I can afford it, I will be ordering your course..far cheaper than the $25/week for the 1/2 hr lessons I had to cancel due to finacially challenges…People that don’t want to pay for this caliber of teaching might struggle a very long time as many can attest to..The way I see it. $150 for the course equals Only 6 weeks of lessons (3 hrs in total) and I never felt I truly got my moneys worth after leaving my teacher..A few days after my lesson trying to remember everything we discussed has been challenging, but with your DVD’s I just plug it in and away we go..Keep up the very encouraging work Griff. You deserve to become a Rich Man for sharing your talent and knowledge which in turn makes us rich in the ways of the Blues..
Hi Griff – what can I say – you are a terrific teacher and your voice is great to listen to – and your music – well —just so great – thanking you for sharing your dediction.
kindest regards
Margaret
Your a great source of inspiration, keep up the good work, I have the BGU course very well done must admit though time to practice comes hard, these snippets help, keep inspiring
Hey Griff my daughter has a toy that records the blues riffs I play that you have shown me, when it is in playback mode the speed is double to what I have originally played. You and this remarkable piece of machinery (and my daughter of course) have taken playing the blues to a whole new level. Thanks for the most and easiest lessons to understand, life is worth living when you’ve got the BLUES.
thanks again I have learned so much, and I am learning as I type. It’s a door opened that will never close. As long as my fingers can move. thank you!!!
Hi, I play 3 string fretless Cigar Box Guitars so I can’t use a lot of what you show but it’s still handy for ideas for lead bits – enjoying watching them, thanks. B
Griff,
Just wanted to say thanks for the free lessons. I never really entertained the idea of playing the blues but since finding you, I am starting to like this stuff. Maybe someday I will buy your guitar course but I never pay the asking price when it comes to music, sorry.
thks-have learned a lot-wil get videos very soon-you have been a great help
HI GRIFF JUST A FEW WORDS, I FIND YOUR WEB SITE TO BE GREAT I HAVE PLAYED A GUITAR FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS .THE WAY YOU TEACH IS VERY EASY TO FOLLOW THE VIDEOS YOU HAVE SENT ME BY EMAIL HAVE HELPED ME A LOT I WILL BUY YOUR VIDEOS ON CD SOON AS I GET THE CASH TOGETHER . THE BEST LEARNING GUITAR ON YHE WEB BY FAR KIND REGARDS KEN
just to say griff thanks, your a great teacher,if i had the money i would get yer stuff man, others out there try but you succeed. i’ve kinda trawled around for worthwhile lessons ,you are the best of the lot, and i dont normally write back but just wanted to express my thanks for great guitar tuition, yer students are very lucky power to you mate.
timing is soooo critical…actually, inside your timing I refer to some of the “musical silence” where really nothing is being played. It kind of makes the people that are listening and watching go into a quick “i wonder what he is going to do” mode, instead of bombarding your audience with note after note after note, which can get not only your audience into a non-imaginative mode, but the player too. musical silence is very important to one’s imagination…the listener and the performer….
Dude, your fingers are too stubby!
You need an “on top” view to CLEARLY see what your fret fingers are doing.
hi griff u make it look good and sound easy thanks
very well done have learn a lots here
Griff, my name is Keith. I want to say that I am like many of your fan base, began playing when I was a teen but put it away once I was married and the kids came into my life. Im now 50 and I must say, I have learned more from your free lessons than I ever learned when I payed for lessons 35 years ago. I love opening my email each day and finding a new lesson. I am devoted to learning and Im happy to say your lessons have me playing with more knowledge and confidence than ever before. I am definitly going to purchase your BGU as soon as the work situation stabilizes. I can’t thank you enough. You will hear from again one day soon, thanks Griff.
What Wayne said!
Griff,
Great lesson. I bought BGU (and BBG and SWS) and all I can say is thank you so much. I’m getting better little by little but learning how to play an instrument isn’t the easiest thing for most of us. It takes time and practice (but it is fun and rewarding). For those out there reading these comments Griff’s courses are certainly worth it. By the way, I don’t think you talk too much. I mean once a student gets the lesson down you can practice with the CD that comes with your courses. It’s got to be tough to teach since you are trying to appeal to a wide sprectrum of people at different levels and you probably aren’t sure what you should emphasis and what you shouldn’t. Overall you do an excellent job. Thanks again!
hi Griff how are you mate ,, I have been looking around on the web for blues guitar lessons, used to play years ago off on off on…you have been bombarding me with info licks movies etc etc normally this would really give me the tom tits.but you make a lot of sense easy to understand and no crap approach. I am impressed with you system and I am thinking about buying the program but I am waiting for the.. but wait there is a special one time offer if you buy now.. you can save 3o% is coming?lol keep up the good work mate cheers ray
how important is it to have an metronome?.I really like the way you teach, and explain everything. It,s great for a newbe like me . It has,nt came together yet. I know( practice-practice-practice ) thanks.
Hello Griff
I have been playing with a country band for almost ten years now. I played in the 70’s for about 5 yrs, but I got married and took a 25yr hiatus. For the last 5yrs I have been trying to add some lead guitar to the chords and I am able to do that to a fair degree. The band leader is encouraging my efforts and is very patient. The lessons you sent are very easy to understand. I know exactly what you are doing and can do some of the same things. From the things you already sent I have learned a lot. I appreciate your time and efforts and am looking forward to your next e-mail THANKS
MR GRIFF……I’M TRYING TO LEARN AT 79 YRS OLD SO EVERYTHING U SHOW IS GREAT THANKS.

Thank you for your lessons and I look forward to purchasing them soon. Too much crap out there for instruction. You came along and no more searching. Thanks much, God Bless….
Awesome exercise Griff! Funnest time Ive had practicing in a long time!

Blues is not a song you sing, it is a way of life…(J.J.Cale)
I play guitar for long time but never before some godd lesson like these…
Something you might want to mention to people is that these licks work well for slide playing too and gives it a really interesting flavor. I’m not particularly a slide player, but sometimes it’s the right voice to use.

griff just started to learn the guitar at 47 love the blues fantastic lessons thanx.
say griff your lesson are awsome, and btw, do you tune to standard 440 tunning or Eb thank’s

Love your sessions Griff, and have bought the blues course.
Love your work.Excellent.
The lessons are great but I would like you to spend a little more time in showing the tab for the licks. You pass over this area a little too fast. The more seasoned players may not have any trouble in this area but as a new comer I get lost quickly and have to play and replay until I can manually transcribe into tab.

i’ve been playing for 43 years and have played profesionally since age 16. at 51 these lessons are great refreshers and help me to teach more simplified lessons to beginning players like my little 11 year old niece, olivia, who i’m excited to show her the "little chords" session—very useful cause she has very small hands & a small 3/4 fender which she loves……thanks for all your help and encouragement……..mrk

Hi Griff
Fell upon your website whilst looking at ITunes (I don;t know how but there you go) and what a gem of a site it is. I wasn’t looking for guitar lessons but you have inspired me to get my old guitar and amp out of my loft where it has been in storage for the past 23 years (yes that is 23 years). I’m now a born again blues player – don’ want to play in a band just want to sit on my porch and play by my self.

I’m tempted!! What do you charge to ship to UK? And how long does it take to arrive (ball-park!)
KenW
Some great stuff on here Griff, well explained and provides a great starting point to start developing good feel & phrasing. Thanks for sharing!
Griff,
Thanks so much for your free lessons, I’d be snatching up your course by now, if I wasn’t unemployed and all my money goes to the bills right now. However, I am working on correcting the situation and hopefully in the future…. In the meantime I will practice what you have given me. Very good material and I am grateful(but not dead yet).
Who says you talk to much. And so what if you do.

Hey Thank\\\’s for the info it was really helpful I Love the Blues and connect with your teachings.
Thank You Douglas
Griff, your a bad man on giutar. And a good man for sending me your clips like you do. Plus I can tell that you just are a good man. I am sorry that I am poor and can’t afford your normal lessons but," as I have said before, " I have been playing for 34 years and just snagging stuff where I can. My grammer also needs some work. Thank you for the stuff you do send me. I know you probably never read these comments but, thank’s. Your friend Ron.
enjoying the lessons, having a great time learning something new, nice and easy to learn with you thanks
Who says you talk too much, well, at least if you do, you ain’t an ugly bloke so what the heck. Love to get there to the US one day, or you come over to Australia and we can have a jam session.
Remember the old lead guitar lick in Rock Guitar Book from San Fransisco, Jimmy Page does it a bit, like salt and pepper, just a dash, geb geb geb, or in blues its a pull off from the g or a roll, down to the e, just some of those little riffs can be so effective. Makes me wish I was sixteen again and know what I know now. Just keep at it and whoever said too much talk and boring, huh, bet they aren’t as handsome either. Hee Hee, Nick108 Australia
Thanks Griff! Am I missing something? You being to explain each lick and then you don’t finish, so I’m forced to figure it out by the sound, and much vid replaying. Is that intentional? Tough way to learn, but again, maybe it’s intentional. Either way, very thankful you have put this and others out there. Much appreciation here.
Hi Griff. Got the DVD’s last week but as things go sometime I’ve been over run with other things. Played a little today on the first two lessons. Love it. I just need to put in the time. (As is true with most of us.) The free video’s by E-Mail are unbelievable. It’s a great thing. The tabs help me a lot along with the visual and explanations. Would really like to have a tab on the simple playing on the porch stuff. The computer is three floors down from the music room and I am not smart enough to remember the licks for the walk up. THANKS for doing what you are doing. Keep it up. From S.C.
Griff,
I had some problems with my email and have changed it but still not receiving any updates from you.
Can you update your files and put me back on your list.

Griff,
Greetings from across the pond. Don’t know how I found your site but glad I did. I’ve been a real fan of the likes of Clapton, John Mayal, SRV, BBK and Peter Green for donkey’s years and have always yearned to pick up a guitar and "do-it-myself". Your intuitive method and easy going , easy to follow style makes this possible – even for an old geezer like me. About to buy the course if you ship to the UK – do you?
Cheerio from English Mike
hi Griff, thanks alot for your free lessons, I’m starting to like playing blues because of you hihi! I love your litle videos cuz its way better than anything elso I am visual and hearing the nots is a plus and your explinations are perfect forget those idiots how say you talk to much! most dont say enought so… you are the best! for real ! 🙂 its easyer when you explain and show everything at least everyone gets it and its not a waste of time. Thanks again, I love it!!
Hi Griff
I have rhuematoid arthritis and have found your lessons very good helps with my fingers. Loved the playing on the porch lesson have altered it slightly for my self. But just writing to say thank you for a great site and your tuition
ANDY
I found your website a couple of weeks ago and the various lessons have already helped me a bunch so thanks very much. I\’ve been playing for years but never ever had a lesson. I suck and no doubt have lots of really bad habits but I enjoy picking away in my office, especially during conference calls which I mute! I\’m going to order your lessons tonight. Thanks again.
Chuck – Dallas Fort Worth
Hi Griff,
Thanks for putting these out there.
I could not print the pdf either (the damaged pdf warning came up).
I would love to have that one.
Also does the set come with the PDFs on the disks or are they printed out in the book (bad eyesite and I would want to print them in large font)?
Thanks,
Joel
Thx Griff, I think this exercize will be very useful for me. 90% of my practise is by myself w/out a metrnome or anything. A nice way to (get your toes wet) if new to blues.
Hi Griff,
Thanks for making this seem so easy. I started playing classical guitar last year & just began playing electric guitar in a band. I purchased the DVD’s last week & I’ve been surprising myself & my fellow musicians with the amount that I’ve learned in such a short time.
Keep these videos & DVD’s coming!!!
Thanks!!!
Anthony
Hello Griff,
again what a terrifice song…and I absolutely love your site…could you have your camera facing down on the guitar as if it were your eyes? I can not get all the notes but my ear is getting better…smile..
thanks again
Margie
Never mind I found it!
I don’t see the pdf tab file – is it available?
EIEIO,
Great blues in open E. You just reinforced all the goof’in around I’ve been doing for years. I have to admit, of all of the links I get for guitar stuff, you have the right idea. I will be getting your lessons soon. Just got to get the old lady to turn a couple more … Just kidding.
IF IT’S TOO LOUD, YOU’RE TOO OLD !
Hi Griff,
I ordered the beginners blues guitar lessons and am waiting for them in the mail. Really been enjoying the online lessons and am practicing my A monor blues scale (trying for 100 times a day).
Tried to print the tabs of the licks in the last lesson (on the porch blues in E) but it wouldn’t print off. Are they included in the beginners lessons?
bob
Thanks Griff for making my guitar playing a lot easier. I am new to all this but I have gotten your lessons in the mail and I am practicing at least twice a day. Thanks again for all the support…Charlie
Greetings Mr Griff…
This is great stuff. Helpful and well explained. Thanks.
Glad I saw your sidebar ad on FB.
Looking forward to more… gotta go practice now.
Thank’s griff Im 45 and have picked up the guitar many time’s but just haven’t been able to stick with it even thow i love it. Your sitting on the porch blue’s video couldnt had made it any easyer to understand that with a little practice I could sound that good( WHICH WILL HELP ME CONTINUE TO PICK MY GUITAR UP MORE OFTEN) THANKS BUDDY
i agree about you talking so much,
i only have limited downloads time with a dongle.
but good job
hey griff thanks for the lessons they are great i’m not very good at it yet or very fast but i’m working on it. thanks ou are awsome.
Griff:
You are a good teacher. Keep up the good work.
John
People – just copy and paste the link and add the h to http.
Thank you for the instruction. It is very helpful and well presented. Don’t listen to the, …you talk too much…, nonsense. Not everyone learns at the same pace. Some need things repeated, that shows consideration for those individuals. You might suggest as you present a point, or at the beginning of a lesson, …if you get a point you can move on, but I’m going to repeat points for those who may not be as quick to pick it up… Thanks again.
Very COOL! Is this included in your course?
Hi Griff. I like your lessons very much.Thank you.Billy Elliott
p.s I can not find the pdf file
Hi Griff. I like your lessons very much.Thank you
Billy
I’m really sorry, it appears that some of my files just disappeared one night. Many of them were obvious, but this one wasn’t. I finally “found” the missing file and re-uploaded it. I apologize for the mixup.
As for the PDF not working, that error happens when you need to update your adobe pdf reader. It’s a free upgrade from the Adobe site.
Hi Griff,
Video not found ,comes up when i try to download it, please check your files this one is not working for us.
Thanks
Terry B.

Thanks for the all the help and I really appreciate your explicit commentary.
Clapton is God! Let’s not forget it!
Great Site. I am new to the blues playing.I have gotten alot from this and I thank you so much. Just being constuctive, you talk a little too much, but it is still helpful information, it takes a little away from you teaching the lick properly. You rush through and miss a few notes at times. For beginners with blues, especially me, please slow down just a little. Don’t misunderstand me; love your help, great job. Thank You very much.
I really like the simplicaty of your lesson and you explain it very well,…the only criticism that I have is that in your vidio you talk too much and pick the fly s… out of the pepper…after a very short time you are boring us and I just click to the tabs and do my on thing,…but thanks anyway!
Hey Griff,
Would you mind checking the PDF file for the Playing on the Porch tab? I’m getting a “damaged file” error on this. Thanks!
Superb stuff. Compared to some of the material on the net. You are the best by far
I gonna love trying this. Thanks. I’ve been playing blues for years without the licks , now my sounds will be richer thanks
you did great… with this one… i love it…. i can wait for more…. i just have to get the chords down and have them meet with the licks… but you are a great teacher…
Hey Griff – good stuff.
You say create your own riffs – Is there some music theory that you can share that would enable one to do this.
How does one know what notes work with what chord – or is just a matter of what sounds good.
You have to remember that not every one is as talented as you are and when you are old , tone deaf , wear glasses – you need all the help you can get.
Cheers.
Ha Griff
Great piece of info. Now I will also learn how to count thanks heaps.
Regards
Andy M
AS a retired man of 60 odd years young I have tampered with the blues guitar for a long time , ever since Mr Clapton & I were young men! As I now have more time I can do a lot better ,Your lessons have helped me a lot ! Sadly though I might have left any “gigging” days behind .Thanks again Chris Kershaw(UK)
loved the lesson. very very helpful
is there a PART II ????? there definately should be!
wow pretty dang nice lesson.
ill work on this today and be better tomorrow.
i tend to play too many notes & this will simplify things and hopefully make my playing more precise and listenable.
Love the “Blues” man, I used to play just rock licks like the ocean or just got paid today, etc… but it’s all the same with a differnt count. I love the videos, they bring things in perspective for me. Huge Hendricks and Stevie Ray fan so these lessons rock.
Thanks Keith
Hey Griff,Today I recieved my package(bluesguitarunleased)I didn’t open it yet,but after dinner it’s going to happen.I really hope it works for me,i’m really excited to get on with it.Thanks for all the e-m/lessons that you have been sending out.I really have learned alot from that stuff,I almost can’t beleive it.So anyway after dinner I hope to be on my way to the land of the Blues,Thanks to you .Jeff B.
Great lesson Griff. Tried it out and had some fun with it. I did’t really want to stop . It’s the kind of thing you can reall get yourself in to. Thanks for the lesson. And you are not a dummy. :o)
Cheers Hlynur.
Griff, thanx for the emails,. thanx again for your time. am seriously
considering 1 of your videos, your a good teacher.
I got a lot out of your 12 bar blues in the next

Thanks Griff for all your mails – I so enjoy trying them out,and think you make a great teacher. If I lived in America, I would love to become one of your students, as you make the lessons sound so easy (which means a lot in my retirement years!)Thanks for your help.
just what the doctor ordered, thanks Griff.
Clearwater beach fl
just watching your playing has inspired me much more than all the other tutorials i have tried.
My playing has improved tremendously
thank you
Griff,
This is great stuff but would really appreciate the tabs on this. Being new to guitar, it is difficult to remember the licks and the cords. I know it will come but starting out it gets a little confusing. Thanks for your help.
Good lesson for old (67) beginners. 🙂
Is there a tab available to save or print?
I ‘d call those OBAMA licks… or licks I can play obama self!
Fun with the blues. Got it so bad, I’m gonna move in next door to ya and your lawn’s gonna die!
Hey Man
That is great stuff..I’m an ‘old fart’ – but I learn every time I hear you.
Thanks..
-Newt
very informative lesson. only add is that i would have liked you to do a complete run thru it at normal speed to put it all together for he rythm, sound & timing
Hi Griff
I am very impressed and proud of what i’ve learnt today. Nice job and thanks very much for this wonderful lesson.
now your talking want i want to learn
Griff,
you have to be one of the best teachers I have run across. I like you style, and your pace and especially your split screen. (It does occasionally freak me out when your hand looks huge compared to your head)
Thanks for this lesson, fun and very informative.
Ken
nice job …..i like thse video a lot …thanks for your hel griff… ur the mann
I am just starting to play again after a lapse of 40 years and having tried a number of online courses, your lessons are by far the most understandable. Playing has become fun again.
Hi,,
Great lesson,I was a bit sceptisch about buying a other guitar course but iam really thinking about to take that 3 times pay offer.
Thx for all the free support 🙂 .
Like what I see so far Griff. Looking forward to receiving my course. You have a way that’s easy to comprehend.
Great stuff Griff, How do i get the TAB for this lesson? Thanks
How can I get the TAB for this lesson?
Hello Griff do have those lick in tab form I trying to learn how to play them. Thanks
Howdy Griff, Thanks for the free lessons, You do a great job. So I just ordered the Blues guitar lessons. I’ve been playing on my acoustic guitar but decided its time to get an electic guitar and take some time and learn how to play….I don’t know if I’ll be a Rock & Roll Star, but I’m having fun playin the Blues. Thanks again, David
Hey Griff
I love these lessons. Can I ask….is amplification inportant ??? I find my 10 amp Squier practice amp, is fairly 1 Dimensional compared to the sounds you are making.
John
I am getting old, thank God I came across this before I have to ‘go to the porch’. Infinite possibilities, great sounds, easy chords.
Is this sort of like Louisiana blues like Stephen Stills does in Black Beauty (he uses a different tuning) but I think I can see you one could get the same sort of rambling blues feel. Thanks – now I am looking forward to retirement.
Thanks for the repeat of Playing on the Purch – Part 1. I really liked it when you came out with it earlier, and this reminded me that I have sort of let it slip in the background. The vidio got me to bring it back out and play it again. this is really a good thing. Hope there is some follow up to it.
Right now I am in the position of playing by myself, we are having a house built so I will be there with my guitar keeping the workers hopping. Or driving them crazy. hehe Thanks again, this is an awsome routine.
THAT WAS EXTRAORDINARY HELPFUL.TANK YOU.
Great Griff H.. thank you mi amigo.. at 54 now i gain a lot of inspiration from music, now Blues guitar. thank you for unselfishly sharing your God-given talent..
Hi Griff, Thanks for the “Porch”. I am an oldie and kind of played the guitar of and on for years, since the sixties!!! I am way to senior to absorb the technical stuff( just doesnt go into the brain anymore) and I dont want to join a band. Just play for my own pleasure. But these kind of lessons are made just for people like me!! Thanks again. Ray
Hey Griff,
That time of the year is with us where some of us feel like comin out to say hi, “My favourite”, E blue’s, picked t up in the 70s, even the birds sing along up my way now. All the best and take care.
ps keep up the pickin, love ya work.
can you EXPLAIN that in TAB.
Griff: Suggestion to help us…when you give a lesson, start off by saying “here is a lesson on xyz…here is what it sounds like”. Play the entire riff or lesson.
THEN do the talking about it…hard for us beginners to hear the talking first with no ear for what it MIGHT sound like if we played it, or hearing just parts of it as you do the lessons.
THANKS for all your lessons.
Griff, thank you so much for keeping up with me( am 54 now)- a late trying-hard blues guitar lover. i may come up with series of songs in “Chavacano”- a hodgepodge spanish root words mixture with Pilipino dialects. i have 2 songs now- all garnered 1st prize in Chavacano Song festival. gracias mi amigo maestro de blues!!!!!
Good one “Guitar Luke Wilson” 😉
Cool lesson Griff – many thanks for putting it out for us all.Much appreciated – gotta go practice some of those wee licks right now !!
Good Evenning Griff,Just wanted to drop you a line to let you know how much I enjoy your instruction and your”PLAYIN ON THE PORCH” lesson finally made me realize why.It also gave me the answer why you’re so much easier to learn from than the the hundreds of other people pitching you to take thier guitar courses.Your lessons give quick reward for minimal out put, so instead of listening to some guy and trying to follow his moves for 45 min.and ending up being frustated you craft yours so after 30 min.u can really hear something that sounds pretty good and your learning more than you realize.CONGRADS,YOUR ONTO SOMETHING!..THANKS, FRANKIE
Hi Griff,
really enjoyed the porch lesson, helped a lot, playin for afew years but hit THAT WALL ,your help came along just at the right time, Im excited about playin again many thanks an keep it up cheers Paul.
thank you so much for a lesson i can understand and enjoy.I am a beginner at 39 and am lovin it thankyou for all your help. please send more
THANK YOU
Excellent Griff! Need more printable Tab and more Blues backing tracks for us acoustic guitarists on CD. Thanks!!

Griff,
I really loved the lesson. It’s good for an just about any level of player including the intermittent middle aged guy player! More, please!
Thanks for a great lesson “Playing on the Porch”. I have only recently started playing (20 months with sporadic practice and no musical background) but this format beats any of the books I have bought. Your way of teaching is great.
Well done.
Looks like a very good lesson, haven’t tried it yet only just looked at it.
You explain stuff really well, it’s easy to understand.
Really really useful. I’m watching this at work and can’t wait to get home and try it out.
Thank you! 🙂
Great lesson. i do not play in a band but like to play guitar. I usually play acoustic fingerstyle, as I can play the accompaniment and the lead together. With the electric guitar, I either play along with an artist on their CD or buy a play along CD. Now, you have provided a way to play scales without just going up and down the scale. I am having a lot of fun putting on a backing track and just playing. So, keep the lessons coming!!
Finally, someone who understands that not everyone feels comfortable playing with others, but still like to have fun. Griff, I think my prayers have been answered.
Kind Regards

You are one cool cat. I have spent the last four years playing the simple chord songs and struggling with the scales and the leads. You really make it simple or finally a switch turned on for me. Maybe both.. Thanks so much for giving me the plays to carry on.I would love to play with someone but noone wants to hear me or even give me a chance to play so I just play by myself. I love it so much.
Very appreciated. Especially doing this in E as it is an open string approach and lends itself to capo use for G and A without modification (acoustic player here). I took the time to chart this out and practice it. Thank you for the lesson. JJ
agreat licks i like old the best keepup the good work grif joetheshakerRBL
Sorry I’ve been away for a few days. If you’re having problems with the pdf files, you probalby need the newest adobe reader which you can get at http://www.adobe.com/products/reader
Thanks for all the great input and feedback. Enjoy!
Griff
I WANT THE dvd’S AS SOON AS THEY ARE AVAILABLE. This is just what I have been waiting for.
What a brill lesson, great for getting the juices flowing, great for timing and inspiration to play and get ideas to be creative
You can find his lessons at playingthroughtheblues.com
TRYED TO DOWNLOAD THE TAB BUT WAS ADVISED BY A DIALOG BOX THE FILE WAS CORRUPT/DAMAGED. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Griff, this is truly just what i have been looking for to get into a space of simple inner individual creativity with the blues on both acoustic and electric.truly inspirational mate.ian – Sydney Australia Out on the Porch……
This is one of the more comprehensive, well explained guitar lesson i ever seen. Congratulations, you are a great guitar teacher.
Thank you. This is excellent!
Let’s review: I have a guitar; I have the lesson; I practiced the lesson and believe I have it mastered…now I need the back porch. Please send me $1 dollar to the “I need a back porch to play blues” fund c/o………………………………………hahahahahahah….i just kill me. and I bet a few of you wish I would right about now!
Thanks
THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO DO ON MY BACK PORCH.
THAT WAS GREAT AND WHAT I WANT TO DO MYSELF ON MY BACK PORCH. THANKS.
Griff, I have been at the guitar now for
about 2 1/2 years and am slowly learning (not bad for a 62 year-old) to play with much of your help. The playing on the porch lesson is what I have been looking for my entire 2 1/2 year “career”. I just want to entertain myself, and the “porch” thing is PERFECT ! Please try to include more of this type of playing in the future. Having said it to you before, I have never gotten so much for the little $ you requested for the original “PTTB”. You are truly a generous and great teacher. Keep it up !!
Great lesson. Thanks! Got anything more on “one guitar only” timing and, or playing along with a metronome?
Hey Griff,
More fun stuff!! No problem counting out loud, but for crying out loud,I, wish I, could make my fingers keep up!!
PPTB and all of the extras was the best investment I’ve made for guitar instruction. Thanks for all you efforts!
Thank’s this is very cool, the tab would be appreciate
You are great
Thank you again
Thanks griff, your lessons are the best i have ever seen.
Thanks! That was flat out fun!
Griff this is great, right on time. You make everything so simple..Christmas is around the corner, and Hubby wants to know how to purchase the DVD’s for PTTB or Unleashed.. He knows I love your methods ..
Your Friend/Student ..
Lynn
Very nice job with the video. Do you have the licks in tablature?
Great lesson Griff. Really gets one in the mood to just play. Appreciate the lesson and your excellent way of teaching and explaining.
Great lesson. I have been doing the front porch thing for some time and now after the video it makes even more sense. Love the use of the “rest”. Thanks.
Griff,
Having gone through this with you in a lesson and now seeing it here on your blog really drives home the techniques. Thanks for putting it all together… see you Tuesday.
Anthony
I like this concept.Can I purchase This?
Where do you find the DVD’s and lesson books.
Ditto on comments before me. I’d like to know the price of the Unleashed course and tab for your riffs. I just finished visiting your web-site. Enjoyed several of the you-tube videos. Thinking about buying your cd. Sounds really good.
Thanks, Terrie
FABULOUS.
NOW, If you’d just publish a DVD set of PTTB, maybe I wouldn’t get Lost all the time!
Ahaha.
Cheers,
Cooper
Hey Griff,
My hats off to your offering a clear & concise process to some of the most therapeutic and “fun” blues – what an oxymoron “fun blues”!!!
Best to you…
Thanks Griff really enjoyed the lesson,If you have Blues Guitar Unleashed up and running I could be interested.Still learning with Playing Through The Blues but always interested in new material. Well Done. Alan.
Griff, Tab would be rightous!!!!i think i speak for the majarity.
Great lesson for the soloist in us all…..I am finished with PTTB and the Chords and Rythem e-books. What’s next? You have the skills!!
Thanx for everything, Dave
Herman,
I’m one of those that has problems counting outloud or even tapping my foot. I started playing music as a kid on piano and my piano teacher never taught me timing. The teacher would play the piece and I would mock her. Now years later I can’t stay in time to save my life LOL. Maybe Griff can gives us some exercises to retrain our brains.
just what I’ve been looking for but can you email me the tabs or tell me where to get them many Thanks Freddy
Great lesson Griff, you explain your self really good. That makes it very easy for us beginners.
Thanks,
Dennis
Great lesson Griff, thanks.Have you tabbed the five riffs?I can’t find them.
Cheers
Steve
Thanks for making it so easy for us, however counting out loud is not that easy for me, I wonder if other guitar players have a problem with that as well ?
I’m more of a “feel” person.
Great lesson though.
Thanks again,
Herman
Great lesson Griff, as usual. Only just tried it out and had some great fun with it. I didn’t really want to stop but I suppose I have to go to work eventually. It’s the kind of thing you can reall get yourself into and keep going and going and going. Thanks for the lesson.
Tony
Just great! Plain and simply put which is a perfect way to learn and play by yourself which I have been doing for sometime. Please post more of these lessons in future.
Thanks

Me too – great for getting the rhythm in your head. I do play with a band (played together for 2/3 years in the 60’s, would you believe, then reformed three years ago and gigging agin!) but I do enjoy playing on my own and this lesson makes sense of how to keep time without a drummer or a rhythm guitarist behind you, or even a metronome. Thanks, Griff.
