Yes, I have a huge problem with those little stompbox things and the wonderful sounds they make. I have like 3 drawers full plus a few more in various places (not to mention 2 or 3 multi-effects units.) It’s definitely something I need to get under control 🙂
Well today I have a new gear demo with some “boutique” pedals you may not have heard of… plus a little demonstration of me using them in action!

I brought one[SVR] model…I really like the action and sound…In some ways..Like Strat better

I liked your stomp boxes, I have a few multi effects boxes but trying to remember where to set them and where to store the sound you just made is a trip. The books that came with them are very hard to understand at best when they talk about all the effects that you are already suppose to know. The types of amps that they have on them are another thing. One that I do have is the RP 70 digitech which is ok as far as storing them, but it gets very complicated making sounds up from the ones that are already made. The tone library ,it says is a good place to start which it is but they don’t tell you how to do each step along the way . Sometimes you do it and sometimes you louse it all ,anyway you get my drift I hope. Even when you go to their forum ,the only thing people talk about is how great they are . I just wish someone could tell you what settings they like and how they did it, Should be how to make your stomp boxes work for dummies . TY for some box info that shed some lite on some boxes.

I was just catching up on my old mail and just had to see this video, I had goose bumps watching and listening to U play the blues. God U are magnificiant! Now, I shall watch my BEGINNING BLUES GUITAR that I ordered from U a few month’s back. Your style remindes me of Clapton’s/
I watch this every now and then it keeps me focused, your the best Teacher on the Web that’s for sure well maybe one of the best ha ha you know what I mean. I’m happy with the Video’s, and the Bonus CD Package I bought are Great, Backing Tracks are Great I learn alot from them and are a lot of fun too. I’ve been playing for two years. Do you think I can do that in another six months of practice? Ha! Just kidding. That was amazing and your videos cleared up a great deal of questions for me as I have been just trying to get some of those sounds out of just my amp, wondering if it was broken or not. I am nearing 60 and needed a new hobby and you have inspired me to learn the way you teach and now I know how well you play. “BZ” my Friend (oh thats well done in Navy Talk).
Question for you. Are there any standard settings for the amp knobs to get certain sounds?

I wish I could play like that, I often wonder how people are able move their fingers so fast over the keyboard. That was the plus. Now the negative (for me that is):
I just happen to rather dislike the added forms of distortion, as used in some parts of rock. My preferred style is kind of based on the Shadows, pure and clean.

Been a student for quite some time and this jam on this post is absolutely one of the best I’ve heard. I loved the show about the pedal board, but I’m more than curious with what equipment that’s sitting behind your left shoulder during the jam. With so much “stuff” that’s out there, it’s hard to determine without spending a fortune as to which equipment is necessary for a small in home studio. Could please do a video showing how the signal is routed through all those pretty lights behind you? Thanks for sharing your knowledge base with the uncleaned masses, of which I’m one.
Accoustic blues are ok, but I’m going to get “Unleashed” as soon as my lady unleashes the checkbook. May have to do it while she’s sleeping. Get the job done, then pay the price later, I always say.

Hi Griff, you just amaze me, I have dabbled with guitars since I was 10yrs old.
Played bass for many years for various bands, they called me the one string wonder but my true love is lead soloist, never could master a solo or riff, chords no problem but still cant rember scales.
As I am now 65yrs old I still love messing around on my guitar so for all those guys out there who are getting frustrated hang on in there and just enjoy.

thanks for putting together all you do. I’ve been playing for over 40yrs, in length, but knock it down to actual time spent on the guitar and it hasn’t been that long…I am learning more from your lessons, and video shorts in the past few months, than all the lifetime of playing dry, self induced lessons from books etc. (i don’t play in a band, just on my own mostly, but sometimes, and not enough, with friends) The peddle board is an eye opener for me. I’ve been trying to get tone from my blues jr and hot rod amps and it just wouldn’t be there. I can now relax knowing that it is not just my ineficiency in cranking the knobs to the right positions, but it’s in a pedal. I guess I should spend more time paying attention to who’s playing what equipment instead of just listening and watching style. Maybe a trip to Guitar Center might be helpful too… haven’t been there for years, drives me nuts with too much stuff going on. Anyway, thanks for the lessons and the extra stuff you do. Nice glasses too.

I appreciate the interesting look at some pedals different pedals. I’ve got a Digitech GNX4 and it’s so complicated that I’ve been going back to pedals. I decided on the BBE pedals and they seam to have a good quality construction and importantly that sound I”m looking for. I’m working with the Sonic Stomp, Green Screamer, Crusher, and I really like the Two Timer delay that allows me to switch from two preset delays at will. Although BBE has a bunch more preamp and boost type of pedals, I’m thinking of moving form the base set-up of BBE pedals (which I like) to the MXR pedals for the EVH version of the phaser and flanger, and finishing with the EVH Dunlop cry baby as I understand it does the mids better. I’m interested in using the phaser and flanger with a real soft subtle setting. Although I’m interested in betting the blues sounds I still want some of that Hendrix, Trower, T Bolin, and a little Van Halen stuff. I’m I going in the right direction? Sound I look at some more of the preamps and boost? What would you recommend? thanks pf

This is what I think you should play at the competitions you enter. I think you have a very good feel for the Chicago style of classic blues. Not too fancy or fast or too many notes…but excellent phrasing and having the guitar “talk” the blues. I think your’re best…outstanding…at his phrasing and punctuaiton.

I usually don’t post much here but after seeing you play on that clip, I had to, I was floored. The best I’ve seen you play on the clips that are up. I have one question. How could you have not won the Guitar Center Battle for the Blues contest? A little Clapton, a little Warren Hayes, a little SRV, Bloomfield, Bonamassa, BB King hand jiggling vibato, and of course your own style, its all here. I have your courses and if I can play half as good as you, to entertain myself, I’ll die a happy man. BTW, LPs rule for the blues! What better than a blue one for the blues?

great sounds with pedals
Oh , the wonderfull toys. My newest are a pigtronix Philosopher’s rock and an Aphex exciter. Kicking those on and stacking with a Fultone OCD opens up a world of potential. I use one or two of my ten amps and never get tired of it all. Lately I am playing through Kendrick Hand Wired tube amp I bought and also built two amp kits from Kendrick, which give up tube tone that has me giddy. At some point you can overload your senses with all the choices and it’s good to break out the acoustic.
I liked what I chould hear the vidio was so broke up it was really bad sorry.

2) Was your AWESOME solo over a G Blues? And what was the progression?
3) The $25 I spend on your LITTLE WING lesson was THE BEST $25 I have spent on ANY lesson or music book EVER! It tied up the loose ends I was dabbling with regarding the technique and the song LITTLE WING. Now I feel I do not need to know every single note or lick to play a solo song like a LW or such!

Very very cool. I put up the URL on my facebook. I’m hooked up with alot of musicians in the Fallon Nevada area. I’m 65 years old and finally getting so I can play. (open mics) Thanks for all the e-mails, I have your DVD’s but my study habbits are a bit weak, but I do play every day. I have a Kawai GB-2 session trainer with a blues card. You can change it to any speed or key and play along until you can’t play anymore.

That’s all cool stuff and great tone that I’m dying for, but maybe a demo on say a amp like a Deville or DSL with 3 channels and an effects loop. Are we distorting the clean channel? or one of the others or all of them? I was going to go back and review the vid you did on an amp like the a 59 Bassman, where there are only normal and bright channels without the gain control. Basically I got a Boss distortion pedal, Ibenez tube screamer, Boss delay and reverb pedals, plus a chorus, which I want to run thru 2 amps for stero. I’m assuming I can get a tone maybe not as good as yours but you know something close to yours with these pedals? So far I’m not getting it. It seems that finding your personal tone might be harder than it looks.
I’ve played guitar and piano since grade school, finding the keyboards for me, are most in demand for the added sound form an all guitar band…I am tring to improve my skills on guitar and here’s my problem. My two favorite songs I never get tired of listening to are SRV’s Europa and Gary Moore’s Still got the blues for you…I can’t get the sustain needed for those held notes that have to last to work the blues feeling that gives me the chills…I noticed it in your playing but you’ve haven’t spent time on sustain…I only play guitar in my band about 10% of the time..so I don’t want to have a massive bank of effects and guitar equipment…I use a boss blues driver and a compression sustain to try to reach that sound but not there yet…I need help in setting compression..I can’t hear what the compression is accualy doing for me…I have a large collection of guitars to work with but can’t get there…Any help for us with this problem?? one last question..I notice both your Les pauls don’t have the covers on the pickups…does this hurt the ability of the humbuckers??? Many thanks for your videos, as a 66 years young bluesman I do find many positives in the way you present the techniques and you are never too good or old to learn,thank you for that !
Apologies for the long response that follows, hopefully it will help you get your message across that learning to play is more important and more fun than the kit that you use !!
These latest two videos do however raise an issue which I and I know many would be young guitarists in the UK suffer from.
That said, and I will explain, the above video prompted me to attempt to simulate/emulate your sound which has that “blues feel” here follows a challenge.
Virtually all promotional videos (I appreciate that this”gear” video of yours is more educational than commercial but still has top end gear involved) feature and promote one piece of kit that is way beyond the pocket of the everyday player. Sure we may all like to own expensive guitars and Mesa Boogies etc but, why when selling/promoting a budget product (either the electronic part or the guitar) must they use “the best” We all know know why but it is in a way deceptive.
Inspired by your sound, and I hope this helps those with similar low budgets, I set about obtaining “those sounds” on a Squier Strat built from parts bought on ebay, a Vox Tonelab ST and a budget 400w pa system with 15 inch speakers. Eventually I managed it !!
I appreciate that your playing ability would sound good on almost anything, and ultimately it is all in the fingers and hours of dedicated practice.
I would urge any learners to concentrate on technique and practice and not spending huge sums of money (even if they have it) on the over-hyped gear that is so heavily promoted. I have musician friends who have gone out and bought “the best” and they still can’t achieve those much admired tones.

But i get excited being a member of your online blogs and lessons. Wish so much I could have personal lessons from you. You are by far the best teacher. In 95 I decided to learn guitar and bought an acoustic Washburn…but I quit. Four years ago I decided I would learn again but it wasn’t until last year that I decided to go forward. At a kick off meeting with my company I won an Epiphone electric guitar signed (personal autograph not the one’s that a company owns) by Allan Jackson. That was the kick in the tail for me. My mom passed away Dec. 2010 and left me some money, not much, but enough to buy some nice guitars and YOUR course. I have self taught myself and have a long way to go, but you sir have helped me more than any other. Please respond. I’m 55 and learning to play has been the best thing for me and hope that I can learn to play half as good as you. If the good Lord allows me to stay a bit longer, and with your help I will fulfill a dream. Peace my brother.

Gret second video. that is the fluidity of the frett board i am chasing. How about a tab for at least part of the bottom video and perhaps a breakdown, box1, box 2 with the backing cords also documented, etc so we can pull it apart and rearrange it our own way etc. magic.
Hi Griff, That is all great, and obviously relative beginners like myself have learned a lot by watching this demo. Could you please do a session (when you have some time!) demonstrating the differences that are achieved by using different types of pickups. I use Alnico A90s (in a gorgeous Epiphone) which I have found are not all that good when it comes to getting a good blues sound. I originally intended to learn jazz, but have found blues much more interesting (and a helluva lot more fun!) – plus of course your excellent tuition draws one towards blues anyway :-). My limited understanding is that I should switch to humbucker pickups for blues but it seems that there are many different humbuckers available. Can you give us some advice please on what you believe are the best pickups for achieving a true blues sound. Many thanks for all the material you make available for us, you are a living treasure!

My God !! I could close my eyes and think I was hearing Clapton with just a touch of Stevie Ray thrown in. This is my first comment after being a part of this.I just had to comment on this one. When a blues song can get me to close my eyes and throw my head back, and rock it back and forth it is a great song with masterful playing. This one did just that. Great job !!

Very interesting videos. The problem is that you are, and have been for a long time, a self confessed gadget geek and I would never be able to distinguish between the pedals and what they do as you can. I’d love to get a sound like the second video but would not know where to start. I have a great Les Paul and Strat amongst my collection,
I have a JamVox modelling piece of software which gives a selection of amps and pedals which I can play through my Fender Deluxe 85 amp (very loudly). Can you suggest just a couple of things I might try to go in that direction – not to get anywhere near what you do? The bluesy sound is what I’m after – I don’t play rock at all. Still ploughing through BGU and the theory video.

My o my. Great set of vids. It’s always good to know what’s out there in the way of gear. I found it hard to know what to start with. I started with a Line 6 Spider IV, 75W amp. And an American Strat.
I thought the amp would give me some idea of where to go as it’s a modeling amp. I now wish I’d gone in a different direction. A tube 40W in a Fender, or something. The money out lay was a factor for me. I think it pays in the long run to wait until one can afford what one really wants.

You know Griff, I have been watching your videos for a couple of years now and I like your style and teaching method. The only slightly negative thing was that I never get to see you just jam out and put all the stuff you are talking about to work. This was just awesome! I have been watching solos and searching for my sound and style but I love to watch someone just play and play well. It inspires me to keep going. I love the blues and I love the sound you can make when you put your heart and soul into what you are doing. Great solo! Great demonstration of what you can do.

That was an awesome blues performance! It makes me wish I hadn’t been born with retarded fingers and no musical talent. I hope maybe some day if I get reincarnated I’ll come back as someone who can pick more than just my nose! Until then I’ll try to be happy listening to someone who has both the talent, work ethic and the ambition to be one of the top blues players of all time. The guy who was chosen as top blues player in the Guitar Center competition couldn’t carry your guitar case, much less outplay you.

I am 67 and still working in Saudi Arabia. I spent most of my free time either fishing or playing the guitar everyday.When I was a in my teens I had an electric Hofner guitar but was smashed up by my friend during a fight with another group.It killed my enthusiasm. That was forty years ago till 2008 I started learning to play the acoustic with a Filipino colleague. I am able to do the barring so I proceed to buy an electric Fender Stratocaster to get into jamming.Last year while on vacation in Barcelona I chanced to visit a hand made classic guitar shop and bought a Comps.With three different types I am never dull anymore. Fifteen mins in the morning b4 going to work and 30 mins after dinner.Failed to do my homework I bought many DVDs from other teachers but do not know how to appreciate them until you come along.I stopped buying DVDs now.However I enjoy your step by step teaching which see improvements in my playing.You had untied many of my knots.I like to thank you and please keep those lessons coming. You are the best.Cheers!

Griff …. thanks for doing what you do. You’re little by little email gifts are starting to have an effect on my thoughts about getting better playing the blues. I’ve been playing basically the same blues for around 30 years – I’m 63 now. I got lucky and found something I could play when I was in my 30’s when I really absolutely had to have the blues. But, because I never thought that I had a gift for music, I never really tried to go beyond what I had. I didn’t think it was realistic for me to want to get better — I didn’t think I had it in me. Your email gifts regarding the blues are starting to open the door for me and allowing hope to come in. Right on brother. Thank you. Keith J

Great vids Griff. I’m not really in the right place now to make use of this as I’m working through your Acoustic Blues Guitar Unleashed Book and DVDs + CDs (also got the Acoustic Delta Blues Slide Guitar book, DVDs and CD as part of the special offer) with my Epiphone and Seagull acoustics (no electronics whatsoever). These are great books and discs, I am learning a lot and would recommend them to anyone.
I do have a somewhat budget level Squire Tele that I fool around with while I mod it to make it more playable and will use your electric teaching materials when the time is right. In the meantime I just love to watch these vids and file this knowledge away for later use.
Your playing is inspiring and I play everyday just for the love of it, no “oh hell, i need to practice” attitude, I just can’t put the guitar down for hours after watching and listening to these vids that regularly show up in my inbox.

It seems to me (…or rather, my ears) that your rig is designed to generate various sounds that stay within a certain constellation of sounds; your superb guitar playing skills are capable of accentuating each of those sounds, and thereby creating some very sweet and tantalizing sounds. The rig is probably perfect for what you like and what you feel you do best.
However, for me, I was anticipating a wider array and variety of sounds and pitches. Which brings me to my “Zoom 505” device. It has 24 individual built-in effects, nine of which can be used simultaneously! These 24 effects include: Super Distortion Solo, Clean Delay, Psycho Harmony, (which is REALLY far out), Mellow Drive, Wah Distortion, Multi Phaser, Steel China, Rock Drive, Bright Chorus, Power Distorition, Choir Wave, Jet Drive (makes the guitar sound like a “jet engine”!), Funky Phase, Head Long (…a step-type effect), City Night (…a clean chorus sound), PWM Synth Lead (synthesizer sound with full effect palette), Octave Pitch, Wah Fuzz, and several others. With your skills Griff, you could take your audience to Uranus and back!
My very first guitar teacher (1972) was a jazz guitarist, and tried very, very hard to get me to learn “The Shadow of Your Smile”. To dissuade me from venturing into rock/blues, he use to always say “gimmicks are for guys who can’t play; gimmicks are just used to mask mistakes and lack of fretboard mastery.”

Oh my goodness. While listening on my laptop with tiny speakers I was mesmerized. You pulled me in bigtime. When done well, music is magic. Apparently my wife was talking to me but I never heard her. I know listening to you should give me incentive to play better but… Maybe in my next life.

As an aside, I’m sure I speak for others in requesting that you do a little presentation on that cool home studio set up we see in back of you, the computer & software & stuff, video display & audio monitors, why you chose them and how you have them set up to give you an accurate representation of what you want to do when you’re playing out with your band.
Awesome post kept me into it all the way. I love slow blues played with feeling and not over done, like a Mr J.B. who thinks why play one note when you can get 20 in the same space. Great changes with the pick-ups and feel. 🙂

Griff great gear set up. I think you are a very meticulous teacher as your blues guitar unleashed is really very good however I I still really have to practice it more. Right now I am working overseas and I have not been able to access my amps or guitars, I have a Johnson 250 digital that gives me all the sounds I could ever want but a bit more sophisticated to use. Cool blue Jewel you are using and your playing is really very good, something I need to do better. Thanks for the video.
