Hi Griff, first time writing. I really like the licks but if you could count the beats I fine it really helpful. I am just not sure how to really count these. For example should the first be counted 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 e & au. Thanks for the great lessons.

Thanks for not throwing a lot of effects onto your sound (overdrive, delay, etc) so we can hear what you are playing. In a performance of a particular song, one might want/need those effects, but not for a lesson.
Some of the other on-line teachers want to dazzle us with their tone or explain all their settings, but that’s not really the point when we’re just trying to learn to play the notes.

Griff: I know very little about amplifiers. Can you add some comment about the settings you use to achieve the sound on Catfish Blues? I’ve tried to copy Brian May, for example, but have yet to come close. Anything helps a neophyte.

the Brian May sound…
First go on youtube and search “Brian May on Vox AC 30’s”
A very big part of his sound is the treble booster pedal.
The pedal itself is a one knob boost type pedal.
But in the video he has the pedal built right into the guitar..
If you watch from the start his sound is really clean… is no distortion or overdrive… as he rolls what looks like a volume
control is basically rolling up the volume of the treble booster
circuit… not the volume on his guitar… the volume on the guitar
is already on 10.
Also another bonus to the video is how he achieves the boheimian
rhapsody solo sound…
His guitar is similar to a strat… it has 3 pickups
just like a strat.. so you use the middle/neck pickup combination
along with the treble booster to get that sound.
So say you don’t have a strat or treble booster …
no problem.. all you need is a distorted amp sound and a wah pedal.
use your bridge pickup…have your amp set for a distorted sound
then use a wah pedal for a sound called a “cocked wah sound”
Interestingly enough Griff actually made a video demonstrating
how to use a wah pedal and at aprox 2:34 shows you how to adjust the
wah pedal to get a cocked wah sound. Its just a matter of sweeping the wah in the middle position till you find the sweet spot…
trust me your ears will tell you when it sounds right.

Bueno Maestro! Speaking of bends, Stevie Ray played with his guitar tuned lower, one octave, making them bends a lot easier.
I think proper terminology is important if we want to pass along the legacy of music to our children. SRV was NOT tuned lower by “one octave”. That would sound terrible. Please, for the sake of those who have not played long and are trying to learn, please be more accurate.
Hey Al, Gary made a great point on tuning down, which especially makes that bend a bit easier, and yes you are right he got the terminology wrong ( tuned to E flat, 1/2 tone down from standard I believe) but we are all at different levels here on the blog and it would have been nice if you had imparted your knowledge (like Griff) to help Al and others.
I think you mean one “note” lower, which woulb be Eflat tuning, which is also called a “half step”, since a “step” is two notes ( or two frets on the guitar neck, up or down). Stevie Ray probably got this from Jimi Hendrix, who used the Eflat tuning almost exclusively.

I just wanted to thank you for all the very practical lessons you post. I particularly appreciate the TABS. I was a gigging (even had a touring band from 2000 – 2009) blues guitarist from 1995 to 2011. I’m more or less self taught (and hence have many gaps). I wish I had all your courses when I was first learning (of course technology wasn’t what it is today in the 90’s). For your younger students I would thoroughly encourage them to buy your course. The way you break things down is great and doesn’t involve a lot of music theory. One suggestion I have is to investigate the music of Magic Sam / he died in 1969, but has amp St a dozen CDs out there and he is a hero to many deep blues players. His double stops, triads and the Magic Sam “four chord” are legendary. His intro to Sweet Home Chicago had influenced countless blues guitarists (just a simple double stop – but a tad different than usual). Anyway, keep up the great work, I always look forward to your posts.
For this style of blues, Magic Sam was one of the greatest. I’ve always enjoyed his sound. I just wanted to point out, as a guitar player of 40 years, that there is a mistake. Most of these old blues players (or old jazz players) will tell you that what Sam is doing is an “interval”. NOT a double-stop. A double-stop is when you press down TWO strings with ONE finger (imagine doing an open Em with only ONE finger). Jazz guitarists and classical guys all use this technique. It’s their way of making a five-finger chord.

Great lick Griff! Pickers might check out Justin Johnson on YT playing Sky Shackin’. Basically 4 verses of 12 bar in E and he uses this lick multiple times in every verse. Happy 2017 and thanks for your generous teaching!
Another fine example of your style of teaching Griff. I wonder how many people would interpret such a lick in different positions and claim this guitar giant or that guitar giant was responsible for it. If I closed my eyes when you started up playing and not talking it could be Jimi, or any of the others mentioned above. My interest in music, notwithstanding wishing to play that is, stems from the history of it and the origins of just such licks.
On an other unrelated point, I was surprised to be reading Rose Permer’s long piece, totally unrelated to music, attached to your material. I just hope for everyone’s sake she is now off and not a risk to future computer activity generally.
Do not know if someone already saidt it, but you can find a variation of this lick in Griff’s “I believe” from BGIAB-1.

A little trouble bending , as expected. But so simple and so original. Thank you
ZZ Top – Fool For Your Stockings on the Deguello album. A little easier to learn from that tab as it’s at the 10th and 12 frets which are easier to bend.
This is great! I find it much easier to bend by pulling down rather than pushing up. Is this considered bad form or a bad habit to get in to ?

I also found the same and wondered whether it was acceptable or inadvisable. It might that “if it sounds good it is good”!
If you bend up an accurate whole step on the 3rd string, it is the same note as the open 2nd string. There are a lot of licks that use that and play the bend, then the 2nd string, and maybe the 1st open string (ZZ Top Blue Jean Blues). It’s also the basis for a lot of Chuck Berry style licks.
So if you pull up, it will work on the demonstrated lick but impede you on these other similar licks.
The lick can also be transposed by using an index finger barre in place of the nut
Great little lesson, Like some folks I wish I could get the lessons that you offer, I take everything I can and I think it is paying off, it is fun to do and helps get my mind of the problems for a little while.

ZZ Top version of Brown Sugar starts with the exact lick too!
I like to alternate between the 12 fret octave and the open fret lower octave to give this some really hot leads. Thanx Griff and Happy New Year! Let it ring out Like George Thorogood does in a Ton of Songs. He’s all E Minor and G Major Pentatonic and really helps with his long songs in learning lead in these positions.

Similar, but in this case I think the pull-off is only to G# rather than G, but otherwise Led Zeppelin “Bring it on Home” uses a similar riff (and occasional live versions of “Black Dog” used the same riff as an intro).
I love that lick, although my initial effort sounds nothing like yours. I have a lot of work to do!

Thanks for the lesson! I am still paying for my $150.00 Epiphone guitar. There letting me do payments and I don’t have a lot of money. But just playing my guitar hearing and feeling the music going through my fingers and out the guitar=I forget about money and am happy with out money when I’m playing my $150.00 Epiphone. I often wonder how a good guitar would sound when I play it. I know my tonnage is off and it needs a tune-up. So when I ever I get the money to buy your lessons I will do it asap. My Guitar the top/Head plays good but have way too much space at the body where the pickups are. The strings go up and up from the top to the body.

might be able to help ya with the string issue. most cheaper guitars play just as good as the high end guitars it is really more about setups of the guitar. you can lower the string down at the bridge end and also you can set the intination there as well. go to you tube and look up setting up your guitar keywords would be pickups, string height, and intination.

Guitar sales men will hate me saying this but as long as there is no obvious fundamental faults with a guitar (bent or twisted neck) and the frets are in the right place then a cheap guitar will play or can be made to play as well as an expensive one.
This playability also applies to acoustic guitars but not to pure acoustic tone and volume of course but once amplification is introduced then all of the above holds true.
Where I grew up there was an old black guy jazz guitar player in the town who specialized in ‘Jango’ style guitar and he would often take down the cheapest guitar in the music shop and dazzle us youngsters. In those days (early 50’s) Fender and Gibson guitars were not available in the UK. I had to make do with a plywood copy of a Gibson and a Hagstrom electric guitar from Sweden.Rather like some makes of cars there is some brand snobbery with guitars.But just as owning a Ferrari wont make you a better driver, owning a £4000 guitar wont make you a better player.
Get someone to fine tune and adjust your Epiphone you wont need anything else. One last point if you had a £4000 guitar would you take it out Gigging? Probably not.
It sounds like you Epiphone needs a small truss rod adjustment to bring the strings closer to the finger board. If you can find a hex key that fits its easy to adjust at one end of the FB or the other. Just make small adjustments (less than quarter turn) retune and see what it’s like.

I am a bit confused! In the video you are bending the A on the third string but on the Tab you show bending the forth string E.
Tabs are always upside down. So u count from the top not the bottom. Make sense??

Hey Griff, I watch your videos every chance I get, have been for the past year or so and have learned a lot, even how to hold my lower lip when I play….lol! I mean, really, I find myself clenching my lips like you do, is that just plain weird or what? I never used to do that and I’ve been playin’ for four decades or more…lol! Griff I have purchased your initial Blues Unleashedand DVD program. It is excellent. I speak from the perspective of bring a professional electric bass player for 50 years. I initially studied guitar as a young lad and took weekly 1/2 lessons fron an older proficient guitarist. He used the Mel Bay method. It was slow and and the s ong sections in the course were simple not even clost to hip or cool. So most of what I learned aboutvtock, blues doul. was from watching other contermporsry guitarist. I spent thousands of hours and imitating the licks and chord patterns based on listening to struggling by imitation for several years to learn how to play. Although I becme goo enough to get into good club bands what your course methodolgy shows is pure top notch smart ! You are a fine musician and smart.

You lay them out really well, you show both hands and you don’t try and show off. Dear Griff, Simple is always good! What amazes me about the guitar is that the most basic riff played with emotion can sound so complete. It never gets boring and yet it nevers sounds the same no matter how many times it’s played. As the nuances of each strum varies, so does the emotion. Like fingerprints,everyones style is unique and everyone can do something different and special on the guitar. I find playing my guitar both frustrating and exhilirating at the same time! Your lessons are just what I need in my never ending search to unravel the mysteries of the guitar….which are usually hiding in plain sight. And doesn’t it always feel great each time you hear something new and different in our playing coming from something we picked up from a new lesson? Your teaching ‘style’ is really great! Thank you

The voice and the video are not in sync in this video and the last 4 or 5 that you have sent to me.
anyway – a segment on open E blues and working up the neck (or down the neck – depending on your point of view) from the open position would be cool also – only because anyplace else you are working the four finger – four fret-box one
-in open E -is the same but just a lil different –
( also – i beg to differ about the basic scale and “blue notes” – if you run the basic – four finger – four fret – scale – – index – pinky – from low E – then – index -ring — index ring – index ring – index pinky – index pinky – to the high E – you can get the “blue” notes – with half step bends -and the fingering drill is much easier to grasp – but that’s just my opinion )
and for the guy that posted “ear training ” – very few have perfect pitch –
if you run the scale – while you’re watching tv – just drill – fast – slow – over and over –
you get finger memory – and also ear training – just work the first box –
and DON”T get hung up on boxes – learn the first – when you have that in your head –
from any one point on the scale – slide up to the next note on that string –
YOU WILL HEAR IT – is the first step out of box one – you need to just sit and work it –
but you have to do the drill – practice is practice – lol
and ever GREAT guitarist – started by doing drills – by long hours of practice –
as much as we would all like to be INSTANTLY great – there just ain’t no way around it =)
again – ohhh – THAT’S how it’s done – lol
but FYI – in your teachings – the middle finger gets little use in the blues scale –
unless you are playing in open E –
my index – ring and pinky – one – three – four – lol
they got more miles on them –
but – with this riff – you can raise a blister (yeah- i did )
you can practice it with the ring finger – use middle for support – as you said –
and tuff up middle SLOWLY – while working on riff –
when i play blues scale in open E – is middle – ring – not index ring pinky –
because top of neck is open – and is the natural way to go
but i worked with this ALL day – because i wanted to get it down and get it in finger memory –
and – i guess on the plus side – have new tuff spot on the ring – but had to take a day off – lol
Would love to have some ear training, can’t do it with my voice as it needs training too -.-
maybe this is a ear training but until its repeatedly done

I ordered your blues unleashed last year got the course in november and moved from georgia to arkansas in december and my dvds got left out somewhere during the move. But I do have the book and have followed your emails religously. The muddy waters lick was so simple but so good. I have been playing off and on for a long time and really enjoy your teaching style. I have been practicing the all the boxes in different keys, learning more theory is really fun. I am 60 by the way so maybe you can teach and old dog new tricks. I remember reading in one of the guitar mags along time ago, one of the articles, cant remember who’ he said you learn all this theory of how music works, then you throw out the window. Funny but true. Its a process and I have really enjoyed your teaching. Keep in coming.

I played guitar all through the 50s, and worked my way up from small Skiffle & Rock groups, until I finished up in a 22 piece orchestra playing music for stage shows in London, England. But I still love the sound of the blues.
In 1962 I moved to Canada and, like a fool, never played again; now at 79, I cannot play a simple scale or chord. Probablye too old to learn all over again now.
Today I do not even have a guitar; I gave my beautiful cello built ‘f’ holes Zenith to a friend in Canada, it was identical to Paul McCartney’s first guitar. It was an acoustic that I added pick-ups to. We didn’t have the equipment there is today. And we were poor then.
I’ve been getting your emails with your’ licks’ etc. for quite some time, and I thoroughly enjoy them; I hope they keep coming. It is so nostalgic to this old guy (but sometimes a little painful)!

if you could explain more clearly what fingers are on what strings on what frets because you explain it too fast for me & it looks like all your fingers are on all the strings at once i can’t differentiate which finger is on which fret pushing down what string.

Ralph – for the tone I often use a Custom Tones Ethos Pedal or a Digidesign Eleven Rack. Both are great units for recording situations. Some of the lessons I send out are on the Blues Guitar Unleashed CD, some are just extras. This one is a bonus and not on the DVDs. But if you like this sort of lesson it is my general style so the course would probably work for you.

Been trying to figure out how to get that bend on that note to sound like that for years. Thought you had to have superhuman finger strength but if you put the helper finger in the same fret its actually pretty easy. Use to play a pretty fair version of Voodoo Chile but never had that lick broken down and played as correctly as you show it. Intro for “Brown Sugar” on ZZ Top’s “First Album” (IMHO some of Gibbons best guitar work) also use this. Isn’t this also the first part of Zeppelin’s Heartbreaker solo but I believe that’s in the key of A.

this is great…I’ve been trying to learn Voodoo Chile, without anybody showing this amount of detail of this exact part. I knew it was from a blues “standard”, not knowing it was Muddy Waters…now I know BOTH. Jimi, that sly dog…he knew what I needed…ask, and you shall receive. Jimi works in mysterious ways…ect. god references. Thanks for the simple explanation, for without, I’d still be riffing it very poorly.

Griff you have a lot of great lessons, at 56 years old one of my life long desires was to learn how to play the blues, bought my 2nd guitar at 56, first one got taken from me when I was a boy, I gleam what I can from watching your videos and it’s good stuff, one of these days I hope to save enough money to purchase the set of CD’s, on social security disability, so that will be down the road, but until then, thanks for being there.

Since you’ve gone to youtube videos I can no longer watch as I cant download and play fast enuf. This one took me a half hour to play. You olds ones 2 years ago I could just click and watch. You upgrade is my downgrade and I have to find someone else who inst so techy to get lessons from.

This should read “Muddy Waters’ cover of Robert Petway’s ‘Catfish Blues,'” as this is a Robert Petway song, but I don’t think Petway used this riff in his version. Hi, I’ve been messin’ with this lick in a few forms, a different version of ‘catfish blues’ and intro of John Lee Hooker’s ‘Dimples’ but it was good to hear that it is also in ‘Voodoo Chile’ still trying to get my head round using the wah on the intro to that (slight return).

I can relate to the Ralph Maccio story. I was a kid from New Jersey who took off for parts unknown, out West, with nothing but my ’66 Epiphone Wilshire (they REAL one, with the mini humbuckers) and a hat I thought I looked cool in.
Ended up in a band in LA, opening for the Jefferson Airplane. Not bad for a kid from Jersey.
And yes, I would sell my soul down at the Crossroads to play like Clapton!
All in all, it was, after all, a movie about a young guitar player who sought to hone his chops up and down Highway 61 (or the highway, the highway they call Highway 49). Props to the movie, because it’s a dream we all secretly dream of living.
How you can play in your band, produce training videos, and find the time for these free little teaching ditties is amazing. Oh, yeah, and look cool as ice doin’ it. We’re not worthy, but grateful.

Thanks for all your help,I’ve been using your methods you teach and doing well. Also I have a cool blues and classic rock band that plays at our restaurant about every three weeks and they asked me
to join them next time they play. I’m very excited and nervous about it, it’s been 20+ years that I played with a band. But I feel I can do this. Just think of it as jam tracks and I should be good to go. So wish me luck and ask the guitar gods to look down and be with me that night.

Hi Griff, this is a complaint but not about you. I have purchased both your BGB and BGU. They are both fantastic. I notice you recommend courses produced by Bob Murnahan. I also purchased his Pentatonic Power Insider (lead guitar tactics). With this course, you receive a lesson each week for 52 weeks. He also offers a complete money back guarantee. I received regular lessons up to week 27. Then they stopped. I sent approximately 25 to 30 emails but never got a response from Bob.
I finally contacted Click Bank who handles all the sales and they communicated with Bob and I finally received lesson 29. After not receiving lesson 29, on Nov 18 I wrote on his forum about this and he wrote back that lesson 29 would be out in a few days. It has never been sent. The kicker is now I am receiving daily emails offering his new “Major Scale Course” that is also supposed to be for 1 year. If you have frequent communication with Bob, perhaps you could mention this situation or perhaps you might want to think twice before recommending his courses. Thanks and very best regards.
