So the folks over at Studio Gears hit me up to do some video reviews of their exclusive G&L guitars and I’ll be the first to admit I had never played a G&L and really didn’t know much about them…

Which is really funny since my first initial is G, and my wife’s first initial is L… I suppose it would make perfect sense that I play a G&L!

The L, of course, is Leo Fender… don’t know who G is and don’t care – this guitar is really sweet! Check out the video and if you’re in the market for a Tele style guitar I highly recommend it.

Great guitar! Pick ups are very hot and the bridge pup definitely has that Tele sparkle. Pups look like P90s, but they are not. Just a bit heavy for my taste…still an excellent guitar at a great price in $400-$500 range. Great value as you are getting a monster guitar.

Its comparable women and men aren’t fascinated except it is one fixation to perform with Lady gaga! Your identifiable stuffs fine. Always assert it up!

Hi, i have a US built Comanche Holllowbody with Z pickups. The guitar is the best i have ever had but i have problems finding a nice sound from the pick ups. Has anybody any suggestions? They seem to be very versatile but i just cannot find my sound which is no problem with my other guitars. But since the guitar is excellently built I love it and hope to be able to play it.
Thanks for your responses and Griff go on with the good work!! Thnx for that!!

    • David Larew

I bought one several years ago. It’s a semi hollow body with an f hole…I love it and the action is low. The only weakness is the jack input loosens often…I bought from a guy on Ebay and it was well packed. I play it at blues jams all the time. It’s very versatile. Thanks George and Leo!

Great demo, Griff! I’m anticipating the shipping of a G&L “Comanche” in the next few weeks from the G&L factory in Fullerton, CA. G&L guitars struck me as a high value point measured against any guitar manufacturer’s lineup. Like Fender, PRS and Gibson (and no doubt others), G&L does have overseas factories, and guitars made over there may be excellent guitars. Not to digress, but I bought a PRS Custom SE semi-hollowbody made in South Korea two years ago and it is a wonderful guitar. In my quest for a guitar with different tones from the semi-hollowbody PRS I looked at American made Fenders, PRS’s and Gibson’s. I found a lot of great guitars, but the G&L guitars (like you I’d not heard of them – until I wandered into a small guitar store that carried them) really struck me as a great buy. In a nutshell the story is that Leo Fender sold his original company, then took ten years to experiment with and improve his original designs. He invented new pickups, bridges, saddles and probably many other minor technical ideas I’m unaware of. Then he got together with George Fullerton, and engineer by training (or maybe they were collaborating all along?), and formed G&L Guitars.

So G&L Guitars after Leo Fender’s passing was purchased by BBE Sound (they make pedals and stuff). Today they make guitars for general sale, but what really caught my eye was the ability to custom design a guitar. My PRS has a neck dimension I like, so I was able to order my Comanche guitar with the a near identical neck dimension. It was fun picking a few upgrades, like steel frets.

I own both a G&L ASAT Classic & Legacy HB both USA made versions. They are spectacular guitars and being a blues guitar unleashed member is helping me play them a lot better.

    • Jim H

I’ve played both the “strat” and “tele” models. Great guitars!

    • G Peters

the “G” stands for George Fullerton and you should care because he was Leo Fender’s original partner who helped form Fender guitar.

      • William Babbitt

I am sure anyone who has studied with Mr. Hamlin knows that the statement I don;t care BECAUSE is the point, not that he doesn’t care,

Got something else to do instead of picking out any little thing to show your superior intelligence?

For the record, we all bow down and honor your superior intelligence and for putting Mr. Hamlen in his place.

        Now, do you feel better?

Maybe you could have phrased it, “the G is for Genius, like me?.

Why be so nasty when the emphasis was on BECAUSE the guitar was impressive in his opinion.

When we all become absolutely knowledgeable and perfect as you apparently are, the world will be a much better place.

Full of lug nuts, but at least we all get everything correct.

We are all eternally grateful for your kind and understanding correction, and for providing that critical information.

Next time instead of being so nasty, how about trying; “The “G” is for George Fullerton, Leo Fender’s partner who helped design the Fender Guitar.”

The World could could use improvement, no doubt, and education, and I have to admit you provided education.

But the World could also lose a ton of nasty, degrading comments.

The next time you make a minor blunder, and have it brought to your attention, I hope they use more tact than you are capable of, what is the point?

He didn’t care, of course he cares, he was making a point, that the Guitar shined, all there was to it.

As a matter of fact, I would bet you one new G & L guitar, if a scientific pole was taken, the subject being; “Does the fact the statement of “I don’t care” in the description of the G & L guitar, mean in your opinion, that Mr. Hamlen really does not care what the “G” in the name represents?”

When the results come in, I will provide the color and shipping address.

But as the worn out statement goes; “At the end of the day, by golly gosh we are more educated now thanks to the keen eye and uncontrolled need of someone to show he or she knows, and fixed that horrid mistake”

Once again, does nearly everything have to be in some negative context?

The World is stressed enough, and I wonder what contributes to that?

A light hearted comment that harmed no one, and was nothing more than a phrase, of course he cares, so why is that such a harsh teaching opportunity for you?

        By the way;

“G&L is a guitar design and production company founded by Leo Fender, George Fullerton, and Dale Hyatt”.

They failed to use the same convention as the brand is not GLD guitars.

But should we not care that poor Dale was left out of the brand name? We should care by gosh golly.

Maybe you could lighten up, as true Teachers have the heart of A TEACHER. I can promise you Mr. Hamlen has the heart of Teacher, ask him a question based on anything in his field of expertize, and you will not only get a reply, but a reply from a true TEACHER.

As you are now an official Teacher, or maybe just ate up with nothing more to do, than slam “tongue in cheek” comments, you could study up on what Teacher’s are all about?

So put up the pole, and let’s find out if most think Mr Hamlen doesn’t care, or if most take it as he put it, because the Guitar is impressive.

Oh, when you become important enough to be asked to endorse anything, let us know.

I looked, but cannot find a single thing G Peters is being asked to endorse.

Unless it is the 3D Beer coasters, or maybe the writer, but I have my doubts….

        • Dobes

Hey Babbitt, lighten up. I too was surprised that someone as talented and knowledgeable as Griff wouldn’t know that the G was for George Fullerton. Peters comment was not nasty at all. He merely said that Griff should care, and he should. Leo thought enough of George to include him in the name of his new company. Do you drone on like this whenever you make a point? Must be the life of the party.

        • Anthony

Wow. Quite a tongue lashing. I don’t think he was trying to embarrass Griff. I think he felt strongly about the great team that started Fender. A cool history. Nice to see you want to defend our pal Griff but I guess you had a bad day.

        • Art

Way over the top Mr. Babbitt and in reading your comments I’d say what you are charging Griff with is exactly what you did you this chastizing response. While I agree with one individual that Griff should have said it differently out of respect for the man even Leo had admiration for (George Fullerton), I also know Griff is not the man you want to describe nor likely have you ever met. I’m starting to do my own ranting so I will quit. BUT I will stand behind Griff as a man of integrity, honesty and and outstanding teacher.

        • Mark S.

Not to be “picking out any little thing” or trying to show any “superior intelligence”, but do you realize that 3 out of the 4 times that you used Griff’s last name, you misspelled it? Perhaps that soapbox was a little too high…

      • Art

Well said Mr. Peters well said.

        • Robert

Hey Babbit, get down off your high horse and apologize to everyone!

    • dale

Griff, I do believe if you put strings on a cement block you could make it sound gooood..Yes that is a great sounding guitar. will try and check one out. Thanks Dale

    • Richard Ruh

beautiful guitar send me one please? lol

    • Keith

Found one 2 wks.ago. ASTS Classic Bluesboy Semi Hollow with 4way switch
(changes both pickups together from series to parallel for a dirtier sound)
Excellent workmanship. Not sure what year made, but better than the teles
      i have had

    • david gibson

cool axe, nice groove you had going. that’s to be expected from a player of your talent!

    • Lynn

I have a G&L Legacy Tribute – Strat style guitar and it is fantastic. Fit and finish is great and G&L’s PTB (Passive Treble and Bass) tone control system gives you more flexibility in sound than normal bass and treble tone controls.

    • mattydess@hotmail.com

The G is for George Fullerton! When George and Leo started G&L after Leo sold Fender, they took what Fender had started and basically turned the Fender line into almost custom shop, hand finished guitars.

    • JesseRay

Nice guitar! But it’s the player (Grif) that makes it sound so great.

    • cowboy

A local store (since out of business) used to carry the G & L line…very nice guitars…great action and feel. Does the one in the video have P90’s?
