Here’s a lick in the style of something Billy Gibbons would play in the solo to La Grange.

The riff is basically a C minor groove (C, Eb, and F power chords.) So the C minor pentatonic and blues scales are what you want to use.

The key to this lick is to get the pull-offs right and keep them in time. Most people blow it because they rush those pull-offs, so be careful of that.

And if you like this and want more, check out my Blues Guitar Unleashed DVD Course.

      Hey Griff,
      Awesome lick man.
I myself have just hit the one year mark for playing 🎸 and I always find your lessons informative and fun.
Thank you for your channel and your talents

    • Doug Lamb

I rarely comment on things but I want to tell you that you are truly a great teacher and I thank you for everything so far

    • Andy

A ton of great insight in that lesson. Thanks so much Griff!
It’s amazing to me the variety of sounds that can be found in box 1.
Been working on Comfortably Numb, David Gilmour.
Your advice about timing fails on pull offs hit me center forehead, and forces me further along the path of progress. Guilty as charged, but starting to accept how important counting is. Dang.
      And bending.
You sir, are a great American guitar teacher!

    • Mike

Wow!! Red house you tube. Sounded great. Keyboards were pretty good. You gave the kid lots of room to speak. You sounded really good as well.

        Thanks, David. That’s great!

        • Gerry

          Thanks, that is AWESOME!

      • JohnnyB

That’s hot. From listening just to a few SBB things, I didn’t think Griff could sing like that, but the vocal is impressive. He should stretch out like that more.

    • Jumpin Jack Flash

I have this on my wall but never knew where it came from or who plays it…great info…

    • Karl-Olov Sandin

      Hi Griff!
Oh, man, this is soooo awesome! You really have a gift making things become clear and understandable!
Take it from a guy who have held hundreds of computer classes, back in the day… (programming, office-programs et al)
I have got the BGU a year ago, but then of cource I managed to cut my left hand badly and now I am desperatly trying to make my poor fingers work in a decent way again…

Possibly I have to resort to strictly slide playing… or harmonica..(*sigh*)

Anyways, I follow your lessons with great interest. You really are delivering! Day after day after day… Just amazing! Take care! The community really needs you!

    • Reggie

What measure does this lick come in from the intro?

        Thanks Griff

    • BillyO

Top stuff as ever Mr H

      many thanks

    • Jeremy Brock

      Fantastic stuff Grif!!!
      Thank you!
Awesome little golden nugget this one.
I think it’s a superb rif for any guitarists kitbag.
I know this sounds fast and will be difficult for some but really this is all about timing and with a bit of slow and steady practice most intermediate players can get there with this one.
It will give you so much more confidence when you get it down and it works everywhere on the fretboard, which is what Grifs really teaching Here – i’m sure.
Keep trying guys, this rif will get you rocking!!!

    • greg

thanks Griff show us how to do some Johnny Winter stuff like it’s all over now I love any of that stuff Johnny Winter does !thanks keepem coming !!

Hi Griff, One Thing B4 I comment on your lesson is “Is Griff ur complete name”? Anyway You always make it seem easier than it is.Same goes for other people & their lessons. It has to come back to the player, Me,I tune to Standard 440. I guess I won’t get an answer from you here . Anyway thanks for showing this.

Hi Griff Excuse my french I understand English but not to write it. I listen to all the videos you send me I already play
a lot of blues like that. But with Arthritis It’s over.
Continue to send me is very good I want to see them all.

    • jim

Great lesson, Griff! Not only in how to play a lick, but how to teach a guitar lesson!
You cover more stuff in 5 minutes (and make it simple and understandable), than most teachers do in a whole lesson!
I’m really gaining solo confidence just because of the “simple” minor pentatonic, and you just showed exactly why! Thanks!

    • BB Bhargava

Thanks again Griff for the inspiring lick . Although it above my level, however I am eager to learn it . Your taeching method has inspired me .

    • Ray ASKINS

Yes Griff, do more ! Great job

    • Rich Hughes

Griff…I’ve seen Billy do the song 5 times…and each time I try to count as he does it….but youve shown me how to do it correctly…thank you from the bottom of my heart..BIG is still my favorite player…so more of him….please.
      And thank you again.

      Rich

    • Primo Roy

      Wow! Just wow! 😉

    • Alan

As usual great stuff and the time you give all of us.
Thanks again…. this lesson( Billy Gibbons) was one of my favorites.

    • Patricia Goff

Please pardon my ignorance, but how are the power chords at the beginning played, and what are they?

      Thanks

      • jim

        C – Eb – F. He plays them with both a 6th and 5th string root.

    • Drake J

Hey Griff; Thanks for the great lesson, I’m starting to get more into the blues, I mostly play rock, but your lessons are catching my intrest in the blues, more than before ! I just didn’t make some of the connection’s, but am starting to get how they mesh with other forms, like rock, and the like ! Keep up the good work, and as one with ADD, you teach very well ! Thanks! ——Drake—–

    • Dale Lee

Thanks again Griff, you are one of the best teachers on the internet. I know zztop liked to raise a step for leads. I got you BGU a few years back and it is the best. thanks a million.

    • gavkin

Thanks again riff. Can’t tell you enough how much these lessons help. You have taken me to the next level again.
And that comment by Cam in response to David Bryant inquiry… all right, another tit bit for the old grey matter thanks. i’ve been watch bb king video’s to try to figure that one out.
Waffle point. we had to buy imported albums of zztop here in australia back in the early seventies and i had la grange on tape in my car. It was a double feature midnight showing ‘Night of the living dead’ and ‘The Exorcist’ at the drive in (remember those) And during intermission I pumped it up (the term unknown then) and rocked out to la grange over and over again. People were coming up and asking who it was and to play it again. It took years for commercial radio to catch on and now, 2015 they play it every day. Billy, your a legend.

    • tony

At first I did not get it . Kinda been goin in this direction . With triplets anyways . A step progression going on kool . I believe that LaGrange is actually in the key of A no . I sure that it is in the bgu course unleashed .

      • Tim T

La Grange is in A, but it modulates to C for this part, so Griff has the key correct.

    • Pete From philly

Hi Griff, and everyone! Thanks as allways for that tidbit, love it. Nice to see the Les Paul again, sounds awesome. But you allways leave me wanting more. I have some of your courses, and they’re great. But as you put it, here’s how to fish, not a fish. I totally agree with that premise. “Down to the station” was just what I’m talking about. I loved that 5 part lesson and really dug into it. There were important lessons in there. And that’s why you chose it. But as many of your loyal followers sure would agree, how about a little more of what’s in La Grange? I’m sure you can point out a few more licks in each blues tune you choose to showcase. I have learned a lot from you so far. And I’m very gratefull for it. I’m willing to do the work, can you please go over a little more of each song? Even mini courses that you can sell? One week it’s ZZ Top, the next Albert King then Alvin Lee….you get it. See you soon, Griff. Thanks again.

      • Don

Griff has exactly that course you’re referring too, it’s called “Solos from the Master”.

        • Kimball

And it is really a GREAT course!

    • Michael Chappell

      Hi Griff
Great lick, Great sound , Great tips, Great teacher.

hey there GRIFF been awhile .just wont to let you know im just starting 3rd year . and everything you give is great just alittle help from you has went along way . your mini lessons are must appreciated . more than you may think .

    • Bob Lawson

Great lesson, but what about the right hand? Strict alternate up down picking? Seems hard to do with the pull offs. Can you provide a chart showing up/down strokes?

    • milt

thanks. great lesson and great exercise. Also helps me learn the fret board. Its movable up and down.

    • Bob Polecritti

These lessons are incredibly helpful. And, I practice the moves until I get them down

      Thank you again.

    • Ron

Hey Griff.. good goin .. I’ve been playin ZZ Top songs for years and that riff/run is one of them .. I like Billy’s style and sound .. could U do more of his tunes like Sharp Dressed Man .. Legs .. Sleeping Bag? I try to play these like Billy but rusty on the lead breaks/runs ..tks

    • Lyn Densley

Love your video’s Griff, you make it look so easy

      Cheers

      Lyn

      • Zim

Beyond the level I’m at precently, but interesting and inspiring. Thank you Griff.

        • Lego- ge-47

It’s beyond my “pay grade ” also but thanks for the lesson anyhow!:-)

    • Mark L

Awesome lesson ! Now maybe I can finally get the first solo down in “Rough Boy” which looks awfully similar with the triplets and pull offs. It’s all about the timing. Thank you !

    • JJ Mack

Thanks man! Keep it coming! We will get it sooner or later!

    • JJ Mack

I appreciate all of your efforts ! Great !

    • Tom

I really appreciate all the work/time you put in for us. That was a good reminder to keep the pull-offs in time. Thanks, TW

    • Mainmat

I think I was listening to ‘Tush’ before I learned to walk. ‘The Mexican Blackbird’ would be a very nice selection to teach on sometime. Very easy,
yet great for getting that ‘groove’ down some of them are mentioning.
You’re a great guitarist and teacher sir,
      respectfully,

      MM

    • Tim Daniel

      Good stuff
I always like your videos and tab
      Thanks

    • Sherm Homan

      Great lesson, Griff!

    • riche

      Hi Griff,
Thanks for this great lesson. This really is a cool riff and with a bit of practice, it’s not overly difficult. By far, the most valuable thing for me in this lesson, was your breakdown of the ‘raking’ sound, which, if I’m correct you may not have explained in detail during your BGU package. It’s difficult enough for me to actually bend a note a full step to the correct pitch–though I’m getting better at it! Then when I try to add the raking sound, things start to sound pretty sloppy. The close up explanation you provided here should help.
For all of the players asking about how Griff gets that fat, growling guitar sound, well, obviously it’s part technique, and also part equipment. You’re either going to use an amp with overdrive and/or pedals, or a digital interface with any number of effects settings. For the sake of recording/sound clarity, I think Griff is using a digital guitar interface of some kind, like he does in his BGU package, though this is my assumption, not a known fact.
      Cheers, and Thanks Griff!
      Riche

    • Len Lawson

      Hi Griff,Another super lesson,thank you,you are the best teacher,like number 1 Len.

    • Krzysztof Chmiel

Hi Griff ! That was brilliant blues solo. Thank you so much ! You always find something what is apple of blues eye. I admire your professional patience to the guitar blues style. I am still in Poland but 15th of Sept. I am coming back to England to my passion and work of music. The Pilgrimage holiday music is over. All the best…
      Warmest blues regards:
      Krzysztof Chmiel

      • bobby

I been in love with the reverend for so very long…unlike most players he never rushes and always blows me away even after listening thousands of times…i was at a 3 g concert.in ny and after 2 hours of ten million notes persecond they, steve joe and ingwie ended the concert with this song.. whats up with that..?? Love you guys like a rock.

    • Jack

It is pretty clear from the sound that you create that you are using some kind of effects pedal to get that deep, rich sound. It would really be helpful if for each video to tell us what you are using to get the sound that we are hearing. We, your students, try like hell to get that sound with no success and that alone creates frustration and a sense that we’ll just never get it.

      • PAUL

this brings back memory’s. BGU?DVD? i have to really work on my pull offs. that stiff left hand on this old man. hey i just made a song.LOL. to the guy who wants you to tell every one what effects you use on each of your video’s, you need to make your own sound. it’s like trying to play like Bryan May and get that treble boost sound. find your own and it’s your sound. get an ibanez tone blaster. or a boss distortion pedal. thats what griff uses.s and others. my ear sounds like he is using his amp overdrive and a fuzz pedal.use your ear and then go to guitar center and start playing differant pedals.

      • JohnD

Jack, try starting with a half decent valve amp (there’s lots of those around) and something like a Boss ME-70 (or newer) multi-effects pedal box. My Boss 70 (no – no financial interest there – several others can do the job just as well) has lots of preset examples you can start with and then – when you’ve worked out how to tweak the levels to get what sounds even better to you – you can save them as personal settings. Lots of different versions, if you want.

After that you just need to remember “for THIS number I use set-up #3…” <> Done! rather than having to redo reverb, delay, sustain, amp mapping, etc, etc, every time.

I know, I know, … MORE expense. But we all suffer from GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) from time to time. This way it will probably be a very long time before you need to even look at another pedal. Look for second hand / shop demo if cost is an issue.

        Works for me!

    • Jean Dominique

I play these notes all the time and could never get such rich sound out of it.If one is able to play this lick and master it, you can impress …

      Thank you

      • Jack

I agree 100%. Griff should tell us what he’s using to get that sound that we cannot duplicate without additional gear attached to the amp.

    • Robert

Thanks Griff. This is a lot like the first solo in La Grange. I can play it too though definitely not as fast as you. Problem is when I really try to speed up, I do gain speed but I really lose that triplet feel. Should I Just slow down and make sure I get that triplet feel?

      • Harry

Yep. If you lose the timing, you are going too fast. Slow down and work up to speed while executing cleanly and ,above all, with feeling!

    • tonythebluesman@gmail.com

just fantastic lesson .THATS COOL STUFF I am a big ZZtop guy . on my epiphone les paul a friend added seymour ducans on it and man its a mine blower with the sound that is generated from them so much so i put duncans on a 80s Kramer and wow is the only thing that i can say about them . imagine putting them on your les paul man Griff not to say that your guitar isnt narley sounding but it would make such a incrediable sounding guitar . going to check this video out several times . late

    • Dave Mc

Thank you Griff. Your help me and I’m having a ball playing.

    • edmund

Thank you, right now I’m off island on a business trip, my guitar is at home obviously and can’t wait to get home to my guitar, thank you for the lick, love it.

    • Brent

Hey Griff I want to take the time to say thankyou for taking the time and energy to show guys like me how to get more enjoyment out of playing. Im a guy that learned to play by ear and never took the time to learn tab but Im happy to say I’ve started to learn Slowly but surely I’m getting it together. Anyway thanks Griff.

    • eddie s.

      jim
p.s. did I spell that right?

    • John Madden

Great Stuff, keep sending them to me. With the books and the cd and dvd, I can watch and listen
and play to make sure I am doing it the correct way. Its like having a friend at my house playing with me, when I get time to play. Inprovement is a great thing. I am trying to get out of the rutt by
playing something new. You bring the light I need to keep on going. Thanks John Madden

    • Ronnie Ball

Great Instructions. Wish i could afford the course!

    • Len Lawson

      Hi Griff,A lovely rif,thanks.

    • John Harmon

I really need these licks, because chords are my downfall especially missing my pinky and a partially paralyzed left hand. Thanks Griff.

these are great lessons,i am self taught(by you) 4 hours adays great job

    • David Bryant

Excellent lick. The Gibson sounds right on. I follow all your video clips you send out, and have purchased the Unleashed Series. Here’s a little something you, or a fellow member can help me with. You always talk about minor blues over I and major over 2 ( or something close to that.) Can you direct me to a site that has ALL the major, minor blues scales and chords ect.. that you would agree is correct. I have a whole stack of printer paper that are supposed to show me these wonderful things, but end up showing you nothing and is usually wrong. I REALLY need to get a good understanding of ALL the scales and chord construction. I don’t feel confident going much father until I have a better grasp on the blues fundamentals. I have no problem playing along AFTER I have heard you do it and show fingering positions. I need to be able to this on my own. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Dr. Dave

      • Cam

David, gosh I hope I get this right… if you are on the BGU site there is a doc on there that shows exactly this. VERY handy and actually simple – IF you know your box 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 positions of the pentatonic scale.

Essentially – play box TWO where you play box one. That is the Major sound for that position on the neck. Sounds weird right. That doc shows you the positions. Or, said differently, when you hear the ONE chord, play box one riffs 3 frets down (toward the nut – end with the tuners). Example. In the Key of A Blues… Say the A7 chord starts as the I… Start playing minor pentatonic riffs from box one but play like the key was actually F# – which is 3 frets down from A. You will then notice that box two of F# (minor) pentatonic falls smack dab where you normally play the regular A minor box one shape – only, since you are doing box two on that spot on the neck, the magic is that it’s avtually the MAJOR sound. Then when the IV and V come around just start playing box one right at the A position (5th fret on low E string).

This is what relative major/ minor is. You give me the key. I go down 3 frets in box one and I am playing the major sound to the key you gave me – they are relative to one another.
Key C — go down 3 and play box one as though you were doing Key of A box one riffs.
Key E — down to C# and do box one stuff. Jump up to box two from the C# and it’s still Major sound relative to the E one chord.

When IV and V come around… Go back to doing what you first learned – box one over the E chord (and all the other boxes as well).

Wow, this got long and confusing. Search major minor positions on the BGU site and you will find that doc. Good luck. As I have slowly gotten better at this I can tell you it makes my solos sound that much more dynamic.

    • mike

GRIFF nice lesson keep sending them thanks mike

    • Ray Jackson

Hi Griff. That looked and sounded challenging at first play, but your breakdowns made it really easy to pick it up and play, even at speed. Nice one. Ray (UK).

    • D Stewart

    • Richard Ruh

Nice video Griff Billy is the man for lick placement in a song….P.S. still prefer the strat lol

    • Rob Smithson

Hi Griff, great video, but would suggest you give some basic information to beginners on how to set up the amps to get the effect required to be able to play and hear the pull-offs from a solid bodied guitar.

    • Will

Hey Griff, thanks for taking the time to send out these valuable licks. You are an awesome teacher. I wish I could actually sit in your studio and learn, but you’re too far away. Nevertheless, the ol’ computer is the next best thing. Oh yea! I love the color of that Les Paul, very heavy I know, but awesome guitar. Thanks again!

    • patb

I know it was incidental to the lesson, but would you go further with the power chords? Explain and provide some tab?
      Thanks

    • patb

Jerry T. Searcy, The small 8 is a grace note prior to hammering on the 10. Its well explained and demonstated in BGU. Worth the time to learn.
      Good luck

    • vic Solo

you keep teaching i keep learning…

Thanks Griff, really appreciate the licks sent my way.I am learning faster than expected. I am trying to learn it the way you are teaching me and hopefully I will be able to play solo with my group.
      Thank you

    • Peter 'Slug'

Good lick & well tutored. Always enjoy your lessons.
ZZ Top (Billy Gibbons) stuff is great to learn. Some difficult but most are easy enough to learn ‘note for note’ but take a bit of work to get the right groove & timing to make the riff, lick, song sound right & in context. Great guitar driven riffs & songs.

    • Rick

That was great. Beautiful guitar! Don Barnes , original and current member of 38 Special has one similar. THanks!

    • Frankie

Thank you Griff for another great little lesson …

    • Tim

      Another great lesson,thanks griff!

    • riche

Thank you for this video Griff! I’ve been hearing you use that raking sound on numerous riffs you’re demonstrating on the BGU videos, and was really wanting to figure out how you get that sound. This video helps and now I at least have a reference point for how to approach and practice this technique.

    • Cecil Raleigh

Excellent licks for box 1 pentatonic. Pulled apart very easily, but challenging for me at this point for speed.

    • Jim

Great lesson! Couldn’t help thinking of Norman Greebaum’s “Sprit in the sky” when you played the rhythm chords! (How un-blues am I?!)

    • lawrence B. W

Thanks for all, The entire dvd course is on my mind often. You do a great job teaching.

Great Lesson, great guitar and a nice crisp tab.

    • Ron Rehse

Thanks this is some fun easy stuff that I can do .

    • Carl

Nice, Griff! Who DOESN’T like the Rev. Billy?!

    • Jim Russell

      Hi Griff,
That sounds so good and yet when you pull it apart its easy.
Its not something I would have tried on my own, but with your help my friend.
Bends are still something I’m having trouble with, I guess I just have to practice more.
      Thank you.

Griff: Fun stuff! I have a couple of your courses and they are great…always fun to receive your e-mails with free stuff to work on.

    • Paul Warner

I like reading and following tablature a lot, along with reading music so these lessons you send us are always appreciated. I liked ZZ Top more so, as far as guitar goes, for his use of false harmonics which I absolutely loved, although I must say that Van Halen’s use of real harmonics was a great sound too.
I hope you do more of these riffs and one day I hope you give us a lesson in triplets, quadruplets and whatever else can get squeezed into 4/4 time.
By the way I asked you about this before but have you considered affiliates for selling your courses which I would be very interested in. Paul

    • Dave Cyr

      Love that sound. Thanks Griff.

I see somebody’s showing off his new blue LP. Anyway I go all the way back with BG. First saw him at the Hollywood Paladuim in 73 or so. Caught their House of Blues show in Hollywood a couple of years back (think they could any more people in there?) expectin’ to see them play some of their relatively recent songs like PCH, Girl in a T shirt, Fuzzbox Voodoo things off Rhythmeen, and particularly Goin’ So Good & their cover of Tramp from Mescalero. What I got was an oldies but goodies show and I got no room to dance, so I’m lookin’ for a fight. Yea! I was 67 at the time but I still like to get it on and got good n stoned too. How’s that go: Fightin’ and fxxking, drinkin’ and drivin’, smokin’ it and cocanut, rockin’ & rollin’, Yea, the good ole days. Big brother just won’t let you young people have a good time. Anyway I said something loud enough for, what a ya calling him these days, the reverend? I believe it: Billy Gibbons is a Jesus freak (all rich ole men start gettin’ scared when dying time starts peeking over the horizon); and he got all up into my shoot about it. “This guy’s been following me around & bothering me for the last 40 years,” Just for that, I think Smokin’ Joe Kubek is twice the guitar player BG is, so blow that Jack Herr up your, but I digress.

So Griff, why don’t you check out Tramp and let’s get that solo down. I mean I think that’s the best thing mini me Pat Robertson has done in many moons.

    • Z Z

      another good lesson, thanks

    • Jeff

Yeah, I liked that…..it gives me something to pick up speed with. I’ll try it and see what else I can improvise from it. …thanks.

    • Jim Benson

      Hey, Griff !
thanks for the lick. Jim Benson

    • Lee Pogson

      Sweet!

    • Tarquinnian

      Greetings Ax-Mates!

Actually, this lick is one of the very few by Billy G. that I actually feel confident in executing. My pentatonic studies got me acclimated for it. Enough said about that…

What I was REALLY wondering about Griff, is whether or not you’ve ever given any thought to creating a “Rhythm Only Course”?! Just a course replete with all/some of your favorite chord progressions in Blues, West-Coast Jazz,..and maybe a few classic rock progressions (i.e. Bachman-Turner, Boston, Aerosmith, Bad Company…), you know…something for the older cats like me!

Hey, I’d be the first in line for that gem!!!!!!

      With all good wishes,

      Tarquinnian

On the 3rd string near the end of the 3rd measure is a very small 8 followed by a large 10 with an arc above the two. What is that?
