We talk a lot about boxes and patterns of the pentatonic and blues scales on guitar…

But what is the actual difference between the major and the minor pentatonic and blues scales?

Some folks see “the blues scale” differently than I do, so hopefully this will clear up any misunderstandings.

Maybe check Major Minor Blues Shapes if you want to get better at changing between the sounds on a dime.

Griff, I am a bass player in our blues band. We have two excellent guitar players who understand the boxes really well and are just awesome blues(and most any genres of music) players. I also play my acoustic guitar, folk bluegrass, gospel, etc music for myself. Where I need your help is what course of yours would help me to learn the boxes, so I can relate those to the bass playing in the band. Note, the other guys can play lead on the bass as well as their guitar. I am short in that arena. Meaning, I’m ok playing all the licks to connect with our drummer, and the guitar guys can do anything the want to do. I just cannot solo on the bass. Same thing when playing the string bass in bluegrass, I just do not have soloing capacity.
