I love this song, and if you’ve ever tried to learn, “Couldn’t Stand The Weather,” the sixteenth notes can be really challenging.
Almost more challenging is the left hand muting during nearly every single phrase of the riff.
But if you can master this, you can confidently move from the beginning stages to the intermediate and advanced stages because this is how pros really play.
Take your time, count out loud, and just do what I do and say what I say. Go as slow as you need to go and repeat as often as necessary. It’ll be stupid slow at first, but then all of a sudden it’ll just click.
PS – I’m tuned down for this demonstration to Eb, like Stevie. If you choose to keep to standard tuning, just go down 1 fret, it doesn’t change anything else.

I’m good at muting strings with left hand: ones I don’t want to mute! This is all very interesting…but I’m going to just take that piece of it away for now. Thanks for this breakdown – it’s great!
Great job.
I’ve been playing this tune since it first came out and I was able to buy the book (remember song books? ha). I play it slightly differently if it were to be tabbed out, but same overall feel. Probably because I can’t play exactly like SRV did! Still love this song and that whole album. Thanks for putting this up for others to enjoy.
Hello …Seen Stevie 3 times, front row. Not sure he played every song the same. Why I say this Shannon came over to him a few times, I’m guessing seeing what Stevie was up to. Do you agree it was feeling more than music theory with Stevie? I must blow smoke up your A , ha ha, you are both different but it all comes down to great music. Thank you.
