When you do blues solos, of course you can always just use your regular minor pentatonic or blues scale…
And the last thing I want to do is say that’s somehow “wrong,” because it’s not – it sounds great (always has, always will)…
But there are also times when you want to play to the chord a little bit more, and you don’t necessarily have to completely switch to the major blues or major pentatonic scale to do that.
In fact, a lot of great licks from your favorite blues players are nothing more than a simple tweak to the basic minor blues pattern, like I’ll show you in this video.
The Soloing Without Scales course I mention in the video is at: https://bluesguitarunleashed.com/get-soloing-without-scales/

Play to the chord.
Johnny Winter – any live show – long solos … playing to the chord.
Thw blues master Matt Schofield has preaxhed rhis for YEARS. Play to the chord…
The pentatonic licks are not that great sounding…maybe in the 50s and 60s it was still fresh, but you gotta move on…
Hey Griff, just heard you and your band playing “Someone” on Bluesville on Sirius XM. Awesome stuff!
Thanks for the lesson. Thanks for making us find the 3rds on our own. Much better learning that way than just telling us where to put our fingers.
I love the P90 Les Paul. Are those the stock Gibson pickups?
Yes, they came that way. One of the reasons I got it, love that sound.
Love that solo. Very nice and approachable for me.
