This sounds like a really good coarse. I’m an older (70) player, that did play country for the period in the 1980’s and it was a blast ! Polkas and Waltzes kept the dancers on the floor but the band and I were also blues/ rock players which got the places jumping in the later sets,
Most of our country lick fills we made up ourselves by copying artists from that time and older. Jerry Reed, Roy Clark, Meryl Haggard, Chet Atkins then Ricky Skaggs, Albert Lee, and our beloved Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings. We did a lot by those two.
As simple as it seemed to emulate the successful players it was best to keep it simple as country music can be. The Tone was a challenge as we did not have pedal boards. There were effects then, chorus and flangers with reverb the most common. We mostly played clean bright tones.
Now to have this coarse here just a short 45 years later contains all the techniques we missed back then. When I opened Griff’s email today I had to stop and take a huge breath. For those of us who enjoy playing and singing and entertaining this coarse will certainly open doors and learn what we should have back then. We really did not count much at all then as we followed the percussion.
There were many, many opportunities to sit in with other working bands, when a player was to sick to make a gig or their wife was in labor. I would sweat bullets before those gigs not knowing the band at all or some of the material at all. You just do the best you can and it works out most of the time. But the venue crowd would not hear or know the flubs, but we did, which was worse. So heres to you Griff for beginning a coarse that will make folks smile, and enjoy on the dance floors of American Country music.
Cannot wait to get started. Thanks Griff !
… I’ve never really thought about playing country music but have to say that I agree that the more u know about the different types of music and can participate in them the more versatile u will be, and who knows, maybe discover something u love that u never thought u would, …I keep telling myself that I wish I had discovered your teachings many many years ago, …great work Griff and don’t ever step off of the timing soap box, admittedly my biggest downfall…
