Matt Schofield is one of the next big blues guitarists to hit the scene. Look for his trio in a town near you!

One of the blues guitarists that I’ve definitely been digging lately is Matt Schofield.  Schofield brings together his influences in the blues, jazz, and rock to create his own distinct sound.  He’s also a big student of music who has listened to all the greats and built his own style from them in his blues trio.  Schofield plays with a trio, accompanied by a drummer and Hammond Organ player.  I found a few videos that feature performances with the Matt Schofield trio, a cool little interview with him, and a 12 bar blues guitar lesson in which he explains some of the “color chords” he uses in the 12 bar form.  I hope you dig Matt Schofield as much as I do!

The first video features a little taste of the Matt Schofield trio in all their glory.  They perform their song, “Uncle Junior,” at the Belgium Rhythm & Blues Festival in 2006.  Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yfi9fKpm3yU.

In the next video, Matt Schofield teaches a 12 bar blues guitar lesson in which he details some “color chords” to embellish the original form.  Check out this more “jazzy” approach to the 12 bar blues form at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qut0dKGoZu0&feature=related.

The last video features a mixture of performances from the Matt Schofield Band and some interview snippets with Schofield about his music experiences.  Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RavBHIUR7tQ.

Matt Schofield is definitely a modern blues cat that I’ve been digging a lot lately, and I hope you have enjoyed him too.  There’s plenty more to check out online from Matt so I encourage you not to stop here with this post but check out all that he has to offer.  Look for Matt Schofield in a town near you!

Thanks,

Griff

Really rich chords and smooth string work. I also hear the slightly plaintive voice of E.C. in this lad’s vocals. Don’t hear as much of him as we should – maybe he’s a bit ahead of the times for the old guard?

Although I know of Matt Schofield, I haven’t paid him the attention he deserves!

Seen Matt’s trio several times here in UK. Outstanding player with a great feel for the Blues. Get all his recordings-they’re excellent….hope he gets the recognition he deserves.

Met him last year at our big Colorado blues fest: Blues From The Top. Told Bob Murnahan about him, but never saw Bob at the festival. Maybe this year. We’ve got some good acts this year too.
He’s a major talent, ended up with all his albums now.
