Jazz guitars come in different styles and sounds. Know which one is right for you.

I started to write this post about hollow body versus solid body guitars, and found a video that details the right jazz guitar for the jazz ensemble.  In the video, Tom Hynes out of Los Angeles reviews some of the things jazz guitarists should know about playing in a jazz ensemble.  While we here at Blues Guitar Unleashed focus mainly on the blues, I thought it would be cool for those of you interested in jazz guitar to check out this video.  Some of the points Tom makes would even work in blues ensembles as well, as he details how to control the volume of your guitar in a variety of rooms.  The best way you can be prepared for any show is to know your gear in and out.  Whether you are interested in playing jazz guitar or not, the advice and information in this video should help you understand your guitar that much more.  I hope you enjoy the video!

The video today focuses on a different style of guitar, jazz guitar.  The advice the Tom Hynes from Los Angeles provides in this video will help guitarists in all styles of music as he demonstrates different styles of jazz guitars, and how to manage your gear for a variety of rooms.  Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlVDVU2ljeI.

Whether you are interested in playing jazz guitar or not, the advice that Tom Hynes provides in this video will help you out.  There are a lot of great nuggets of information to pick up on, so I hope you got something out of it and found a little bit of the history of jazz guitar interesting.  Stay tuned for more from Blues Guitar Unleashed.

What a great lesson; I would love to see one just like it on Blues. I know, I’ve seen a hundred or more here and there but none so concise or informative. This guy says a great deal in a very short time, a rare talent indeed.

great stuff, Griff. I really enjoy getting these emails. Right now I’m concentrating on the Acoustic Blues Unleashed materials I purchased from you, it’s challenging and very rewarding but it’s nice to get something completely different now and then. Thanks for everything, Play The Blues 🙂

I am just in process of building my first hollow body jazz guitar and this video gave me a better understanding of what a jazz player would be looking for in a guitar. Thanks for posting it.

I’m glad that you posted this! Tom is a very old friend of mine of close to 30 years and an outstanding player and jazz guitar professor. I’m happy to see his video getting more air time. Coincidentally, I happened to stumble across it a few weeks ago and chatted with him about it. Tom is my musical go-to guy …although he plays professionally and I’m still working my way through BBG.

Well Griff, you always seem to read my mind, kinda weird but good. I have been thinking a lot about jazz lately, I find it fascinating and full of interesting ideas they we can apply to our beloved blues and I am starting to think_ may you come up with some little jazz for us to play at some point? Would be good.
Thank you for posting this. Really interesting and helpful. All the best and talk soon, working currently on your acoustic blues. Great course.
