I was asked by my friend, Steve Stine, to join in a remote collaboration video doing the song, “Just Got Paid,” by ZZ Top… and also re-made by Joe Bonamassa…
His version is a little more to the Joe Bonamassa side, but I got a lot of requests for some insight into how I played the slide parts.
So here you go, hope you dig it.
The remote collab video is here

Sorry, Keb Mo’.
WOW! Didn’t know you all knew each other much less collaborate. Steve, Marty and Griff….my 3 favorites. No lie. I’m 72, a Viet Nam vet (learned some guitar there) and just started playing a few years ago. Joe Bonamassa is my favorite guitarist and a big Blues proponent although he mixes in a lot of rock. Saw him, and taped almost all his concerts. Have no hope of playing his stuff, since he’s been doing it since he was a child prodigy.
Got hooked on a whole different style of blues however that I haven’t seen from any of you: Jeb Mo’. What is it called and why is it so different from what you guys teach. But I have no way inkling of how to play like that. To me, he is Soooo Cool and smoothe. Watched a Concert he did with an old timer that goes by name of Taj Mahal. Fantastic.
Just got paid. OMG. you all rocked it. So good thanks for sharing. Wow!!
Great collaboration, and thanks for some great slide tricks. If I practice them really hard, I might learn enough to be dangerous.
I was greatly inspired by this presentation. I will archive it and listen to it whenever I need a little boost of inspiration in my guitar playing. Thank You!
OMG!?! I love this version Griff! The band sounds great!
We’re you all playing at the same time? Is there a way to do this without lag? (I’d love to play with other people remotely.)
Hi Matt,
Closest I have got to playing without lag on-line is through JamKazam. Worth a look. You need ethernet rather than wireless and a good connection, audio interface etc but I play every week with some buddies and it’s worth pursuing.
OMG, freaking great!
Great to see you all having such fun-three great teachers .Cool bass and drums as well.
Would to see m ore of these jams
Griff, you and Steve are my favorites – learned so much from both you guys!
Awesome video. Enjoyed watching
I’m pretty sure you’re psychic Griff. Your new 5 Easy Blues Solo package reminded me of your 5 Easy Slide Solos and so I have been working on that the past few days. Just Got Paid has always been my favorite ZZTop song.
Thanks for the gift.
Another Great Lesson Griff! This time on slide!
I agree with Dean about all three great teachers! Yes! I hope they do more!!!
The Three Musketeers!
For any of you in “The Griff Gang” ….do yourself a favor…make sure you watch the great video Griff does with Marty Schwartz about teaching guitar to students.
It is a very good insight for any one who gets frustrated in the process…especially with bar chords!
I swear Griff and Marty could do a NEW version of the Blues Brothers with Dan Akroyd!!! Guess who would do an Awesome John Belushi !!!
Thanks!
I was such a ZZ Top nut in high school (mid 1970’s), I saw them live in Lubbock, Tx on Thursday night, Amarillo, Tx on Friday night and in Albuquerque, NM on Saturday night.
Y’all are having too much fun!
Wait, according to Eric Parker, it’s impossible to have too much fun!
EXCELLENT JAM !!
Thanks. Great video. One of the hints that I saw a long time ago, which is great to keep in mind for those of us who don’t play a lot of slide, is to finger pick or hybrid pick — particularly on the high strings — so that the rest of the right hand fingers can be placed on the other strings to mute out any sympathetic notes on them. (Any string that the slide touches is going to sound unless it’s muted). It takes a while to get used to this but it helps to keep the notes cleaner. I kind of wonder if this isn’t why Derek Trucks plays with his fingers.
Love that video, Steve, Marty,& U are three of my favorite teachers online. Absolutely Amazing jam all the players rocking out. Thanks for the open tuning lesson, always makes me think of Keith Richards. Such a great lesson filled with cool ideas. This definitely inspired me to jam out for at least an hour or two!🎸🎸🎸
Thanks,Griff
Great cover of “Just Got Paid”! I think I like it better than the Z Z Top original actually.
Wonderful! Great cover! And Marty Swartz, another great teacher! Thanks Griff.
Three of my favorite instructors not just talking the talk, but walking the walk!!! Rock on dudes!!!
What a great video. It was nice to see the talents of these instructors playing together. I have purchased many videos from all three over the past many years. All offer great insights, ideas and instruction that I have benefitted from significantly. Hopefully, you’ll do more like this!
