This is just something fun for today…
I stole this lick fair and square from Eric Clapton and it comes from his intro to “Reconsider Baby” from “From The Cradle.”
It’s a great slow blues lick, and it works great over a shuffle, as you’ll see.
Also, since it violates the “not starting on beat 1” rule, I’ll show you how to make it not start on beat 1 if you wanted to use it in the middle of a solo.
Enjoy, hope you dig it!

Hey Griff can you do a video on the solo for reconsider baby that would be very helpful to a lot of us Clapton fans
From The Cradle, Pilgram, Blundfaith & Goodbye Cream are solid Clapton!
can u reply your live stream ,Please 4/2/2022
Great lick đź‘… explained well đź‘Ť
Nice lick, Griff. My wife and I really enjoyed the live-stream show last night. Y’all sounded great. BTW, you’ve been in Texas so long now that you have to know y’all is a contraction of you all. We cannot have that youans stuff.
WOW! By changing the starting beat and the lick’s rhythm in a variety of ways, this one lick works over the entire 12-bar form. So with this one lick and a couple tiny variations of it under my fingers, I have a complete solo that actually isn’t boring. How cool is that!
G-riff.. jazzy..
Griff,
Great lick, thank so very much.
just 2 more gems like this is all i’ll ever need
I dug it. I would end up on a higher note C i guess and tickle it up .
I been practicing Strumming and Mastery course lesson 1 for 2 weeks And I think I am getting this counting thing since I play by ear and I mimmick the sound. This is a great lesson as I learn to count and not just hear the sound….
Thanks Griff, will include in my playing. Really Like the shuffle sound.
Hi Griff.
Another really great lesson and lick that I will learn. Minor/major thing very cool.
What about calling the show GRIFF Live and Unleashed
Thanks again from Pete in the UK.
I have all of your courses but not sure in what order I should play them in
Thanks for these mini lessons. I really like them. I’ve been struggling with counting out the licks for years (I’ve been playing for many years). I never could count and play at the same time, but now I’m doing it and it really does make a big difference. It is a good way to build confidence too.
Tried this yesterday but did not receive anything. I have been following these lessons and like the approach
Nice Griff. What is the typical gain or o.d. setting you tend to use in most of these vids?.
What days and times do you go live? Thanks Griff!
Hey, Interlochen! Did you attend either the camp or go to school there? I was writer-in-residence for ten weeks winter ’76. Snowed every single day and first time I had ever seen black squirrels. Saw Bo Diddley at a nearby roadhouse that winter.
Hi Griff. Any chance you could tab out the licks you do before you get to this one?
Thanks Griff! I’ve actually been working on this for a few days now…hoping to do “Reconsider Baby” @ BGU Live 2019 if you have it this year. Yea I’m going to try to get as many licks as I can out of “Blues Guitar Tab White Pages” although that may take awhile. The tab matches up from his recordings “From the Cradle”
HEY GRIFF. YOU MUST HAD DONE THIS THRUSDAY. I’M IN OLD TOWN TORRANCE. LIGHTING STRUCK THE TREE ACROSS THE STREET AND CAUGHT ON FIRE.
YOU SEEM TO BE IN A SILLY MOOD.
I LIKE THAT LICK. I WAS WAITING FOR YOU TO STOP AND THEN PLAY THE REST, WITH THE CORD CHANGE. EASIE PEEZY. THANKS, BROTER
Your obviously a very talented musician and an asset to anybody who wants to take this seriously and learn from you so kudos and thank you for your sharing of your knowledge. Oh and by the way has anybody ever told you you look like that actor who’s on the office? hint hint
Thanks Griff, I love Clapton lead guitar licks! On a number of tracks I’ve listened to he plays a fast (by my standards) descending lick. He does this in different keys but the pattern sounds the same. I’m having trouble trying to listen and transcribe the lick. Any chance you could demonstrate this please? An example of the lick is on the “Riding with the King” album, track 8 – “When my Heart Beats Like a Hammer” at about the 2mins 52secs point onwards for about 3 to 4 seconds on the one chord and then again shortly after on the four chord.
Many thanks if you can,
Richard
Awesome Griff thank you
