There’s a great video of Freddie King doing “Big Legged Woman” live in Europe that I was checking out on the YouTube the other day (https://youtu.be/HXXkD7Dvq_E if you want to see it.)

And I noticed as I watched it that Freddie basically stay right in the “4 Note Solo” box for darn near a whole minute at the beginning while he solos. It’s pure 4 note solo goodness so I transcribed it and made a lesson out of it for you.

I’m watching and I realize I have he has the same shirt that I am wearing. Sadly its the only thing I have musically in common with him. Nice lesson.

Superb stuff… thanks Griff. There is an Albert Collins style 3 note -lick at 1:41 and 2:08 I have never been able to get right. Any suggestions?

      Thanks !!!

Awesome Griff, Love that grove and the sound of C#. will get the 4 note pattern down asap. Strugling with BGU2 but this seems easy. Thanks

Not a fan of this Freddie King Lick. However, I do appreciate your instruction.

What kind and size of strings do you use?

    • Billyo

So busy absorbing all the free material you put out haven’t had time to start on the few bit’s I’ve bought ..the selfish part of me says this is great but the big picture says, “the guy has to eat” … hoping your happy with the balance you’re striking

Thanks so much Griff that was terrific and fits right into your lessons. By the way, I am currently at the solo’s lesson in BGU so I want to try to finish it off, then I will definitely buy more of your fab lessons. At the end of the day, I know this is your livelyhood but please don’t think we are not grateful if we don’t buy offerings immediately. It is just hard sometimes to stay focused on one thing when you are producing so much terrific content. I bought your rock course but haven’t started it yet as I wanted to finish BGU.
Thanks again for your efforts to share this knowledge with us.
      Kind regards Pete..

That was cool, I want one of those t shirts 😎

Thank you, Griff!! This King-style ‘easy ‘ but still authentic published song is exactly the kind of blues lesson I’m looking for, as a ‘slightly advanced’ beginner if that makes any sense. I will more than happily purchase this and any such songs like this that you may produce in the future! This allows me to learn a ‘real’ song but without the extremely complex stuff in so many blues songs.

Love Freddie King! Big guy – that 355 looks like a travel guitar on him. And he just drapes the strap over one shoulder. Miss him lots.

Hi Griff, Thanks again for sharing your insights. Love those potent 4-noters. Is there a reason (music theory, taste ??) that you transcribed this in C# instead of Db? F natural is normal to that key and those pesky F#s are Gbs. Right? This lowly grasshopper brings his humble inquiry to the Sensei-of-the-sixstring(-:
God bless you and your family, Dick

      • Griff Hamlin

Yes, you are right that Db would be equivalent to C#. I just like sharps better and in my experience guitar players tend to speak in sharps instead of flats. But either way is correct.

        • david moon

6 flats vs 7 sharps. The horn players might prefer Db which would transpose to less flats on their Eb or Bb instruments.

Very cool lesson…thanks, Griff! After following BGU for a few years, I’ve found that I really like Freddie’s playing.
Thanks for the YouTube (“listening lesson”) link! Need to listen more..or be just keep being lazy and let Griff
listen for me…and then show me how to play it! Outstanding!

    • Daniel

Thanks Griff. Very kind of you. Another great lesson!!

Nice little solo from :51 thru 1:08. Shouldn’t take me more than a month to figure that out.
