So I’ve been playing around lately with a new piece of software called Song Surgeon… I just got version 3 and as promised here’s a little video of how I use it.If you’ve heard me talk about Riffmaster Pro, this is a similar tool but it has a couple of things that RMP does not have (at least at this time.) You can set multiple loop points, you can save a project so that it will remember the loop points and edits you make, and you can use the “sniffer” tool to download the audio from a youtube (or other) video stream and transcribe/play along with it.
The other thing I notice is better sound quality with slowed audio. They have some fancy “transcribing” mode audio engine that makes things better. I don’t know how it works, but I can hear the difference. Check it out…

Have this program and found it very similar to Audacity which is free but have come across another one called Guitar pro 6 which is more of a tab program, you download your favourite song and you can slow the tempo, dub any instrument in the song by clicking a button and play the lead if you want, but you also can write your own tab/notation which is a great feature. Say you write the tab and the notation is auto in the line above and you can select any part and repeat it in a loop also a built in metronome. They do have a trial version you can download to try out.

I have managed to run Song Surgeon on Ubuntu using Wine 1.3.29. I installed as if it was on Windows, no tweaking from me, and it runs just as if it’s on Windows. After having tried it out for a while, I can’t actually see what it gives you that a Free Software application, such as Audacity doesn’t.
Which makes me wonder why anyone wether a Windows user or a Linux or Mac user should bother paying for a License to use this application.
Can you tell me what it provides that a Free Software application like Audacity doesn’t give you?
Pretty cool – you really should check out REAPER though http://www.reaper.fm/ . Has the same preserve pitch control and in addition lets you record etc. A little more complicated for folks, but a great tool. I’ve used it extensively with your BluesGuitar Unleashed.
I downloaded the SongSurgeon installer file onto my Linux Mint PC and installed it using WINE. I notice that SongSurgeon actually uses a number of Free Open Source Software libraries, such as ffmpeg, which are licensed under the GNU General Public License. I do hope they are following the terms of the GPL and are posting the source code for these libraries on line so that anyone who wants to can download the source code.
If they are not, Free, and freely available software not withstanding, they will be in breach of the the license terms, which requre that they make the source code of any GPL licensed software available in this maner, and could be sued for non compliance. I’m sure the developers of the free and freely available software, in question, would be happy to recieve such a court ordered “donation”.
No need to appologise. I use Linux, and Since Song Surgeon is Proprietary Software I probably wouldn’t use it even if they bothered to do a Linux version. There’s plenty of Free Open Source Software, and Audacity probably does everything this stuff does, and more.

No doubt Song Surgeon has an easy to use interface, but Audacity can do most of what Song Surgeon can do, and it’s free. Give it a try.
I have no doubt that Song Surgeon is good; in fact it has awesome abilities that Video Surgeon does not yet. Most internet lessons are now videos and I love Video Surgeon, because I want to be able to see as well as hear what is being played. They are working on a new version that will be available for the Mac and will include more than one loop and the ability to play slower than 50%. Sniffer in Video Surgeon gets the video from YouTube AND other sites. The company that makes both of these are very responsive to queries and suggestions.

thank you – had early versions of other programs that were not that good. this seems so much easier to use keep showing this kinda stuff and maybe someday i will be able to call myself a musician
I forgot an addition tp the previous posting I made. You can ZOOM in on the guitar etc as the video plays
Hey Griff, This is good but Video Surgeon (from the same people) in my opinion, is much better. You download VIDEOS of guys playing guitar, etc. and you then have all the same options as in song surgeon, except you can see the actual fingerings, etc at any speed you want !! You can download videos from ANT web site etc. You can “rip”dvd’s you already have and play them at a speed where you can see and learn different fingerings, etc.

Not so good if you’re a Mac user; can only get old version 2.0 for Mac.
