It would be wrong to write all these posts about blues guitarists and not include the pioneer of the blues Telecaster sound, Roy Buchanan. Although Buchanan didn’t reach the heights of fame of other blues guitarists like B.B. King or Eric Clapton, Buchanan is highly respected in the blues guitar community. In fact, his influence reached guitar greats Gary Moore, Danny Gatton, Jeff Beck, and countless others. I went looking for video performances with Roy Buchanan and found three videos that I think you’ll enjoy.
I’d like to start off with a performance from Austin City Limits in 1976 featuring Roy Buchanan and his band. Check out this great performance at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDOIL5OqvYs.

Next I’ll jump ahead a few years to 1985 to see and hear Buchanan with all his blues chops on showcase. Take a look at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzA7_vMADdg&feature=related.

I’ll finish up the post with a great performance featuring Roy Buchanan, Albert Collins and Lonnie Mack. All three guitarists play some screamin’ blues with a killer backup band. Check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp4BlGXwSew&feature=related.

Roy Buchanan was responsible for influencing some of the great blues guitarists in music history. By all means, don’t stop with these three videos, because there are a lot of great videos on YouTube featuring the great Roy Buchanan. I hope you enjoyed this post because I had a fun time writing it for you!
Thanks!

Thanks Griff for getting me a row from my wife as I just watched AWESOME Roy Buchanan videos on YT and your links for 2 and a half hours! I had forgotten how good he was! Lets not forget NO pedals, just tone and volume control on what was supposed to be a rhythym guitar.Once again, thanks!
NPR did a piece on the Telecaster 60 year anniversary a while back. They feature some great video clips – the last one is Roy playing Sweet Dreams. I don’t know how to put a proper link here so you’ll just need to copy and paste this to the address line on your browser:

I was in prison when I saw the performance the last video was taken from. I got some friends into my house (cell) and turned them onto all three of these guys (Roy, Lonnie Mack & Albert Collins) who only one other guy had even heard of. But, ALL of them were supposedly “blues fans”. I always wondered how you could be a blues fan without knowing who these guys were.
Thanks for posting Griff.
Magnificent! Many thanks for your efforts Griff. Without them we, on the U.K. side of the Atlantic probably wouldn’t have the opportunity to see and hear these great artists and their music.
Regards, RMH
Roy Buchanan is one of my favorite guitar players. I got the chance to see Roy live a few times in N.VA Unbelievable things he could make a tele do. His version on Hey Joe is my favorite. A sad life and a terrible ending. he was found dead, hanged in a jail cell. Murder or suicide we’ll never know but a great musician.
