In the wise words of good old Willie Brown back in 1986 – “Muddy Waters invented electricity!”
Well… okay, maybe not, but it’s a great quote from an otherwise questionable movie (Ralph Macchio as a bluesman?) But I have digressed again… how about a blues guitar lesson?
This lick from Catfish Blues and TONS of other tunes is one you must have in your bag-of-tricks.

Here’s how the TAB might look for the “Catfish Blues” example I played:
and here’s how the TAB might look for the “Voodoo Chile” style example I did:
Have some fun with it. There are TONS of other tunes with this lick. If you can think of one, put it in the comments so everyone can check it out.

Thanks Griff,as always you have a great lesson! Many variations to this song. Fun to play around with🎸🎼
Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs
Bring it on Home by LED Zeppelin uses that riff.
Hey Griff killer ‘lil lick! I always wondered how that was done. Time to get it under my fingers.
Thanks
Alexander
Thanks, good lesson.

Hi Griff, first time writing. I really like the licks but if you could count the beats I fine it really helpful. I am just not sure how to really count these. For example should the first be counted 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 e & au. Thanks for the great lessons.
Yep you got it Dan.
Thanks Griff I like These little licks that you give. Keep them coming. Happy New Year.
Thanks for not throwing a lot of effects onto your sound (overdrive, delay, etc) so we can hear what you are playing. In a performance of a particular song, one might want/need those effects, but not for a lesson.
Some of the other on-line teachers want to dazzle us with their tone or explain all their settings, but that’s not really the point when we’re just trying to learn to play the notes.
great lick Griff, Looking forward for more…..Thanks so Much.
This also shows up in the signature riff from AC/DC’s back in black.
I also echo the comments made earlier about adding a tone tip at the beginning of your lesson.
For example which guitar, which pick up, general Amp setting, and which pedal, if used….
Once again great little lesson! Thank you!
Thanks Griff great lesson, when are you comming to New Zealand? Happy new year
Hey Griff thanks for sharing. As a new player it always helps me when you describe your rig. Info as to pedals, amps, pups and such helps us reach for the tone. Great lesson!
Griff…thanks for that…and in my book Muddy did invent ‘lectricity…on ZZ Tops first album, the tune “Brown Sugar” uses that lick…I appreciate all your lessons…great stuff…
Rich
Thanks Griff. One of the great licks of all time. Always wondered how it was done.
A healthy, happy and prosperous 2017 to you.
Griff: I know very little about amplifiers. Can you add some comment about the settings you use to achieve the sound on Catfish Blues? I’ve tried to copy Brian May, for example, but have yet to come close. Anything helps a neophyte.
Sorry I am not Griff.. But I can definitely help you with
the Brian May sound…
First go on youtube and search “Brian May on Vox AC 30’s”
A very big part of his sound is the treble booster pedal.
The pedal itself is a one knob boost type pedal.
But in the video he has the pedal built right into the guitar..
If you watch from the start his sound is really clean… is no distortion or overdrive… as he rolls what looks like a volume
control is basically rolling up the volume of the treble booster
circuit… not the volume on his guitar… the volume on the guitar
is already on 10.
Also another bonus to the video is how he achieves the boheimian
rhapsody solo sound…
His guitar is similar to a strat… it has 3 pickups
just like a strat.. so you use the middle/neck pickup combination
along with the treble booster to get that sound.
So say you don’t have a strat or treble booster …
no problem.. all you need is a distorted amp sound and a wah pedal.
use your bridge pickup…have your amp set for a distorted sound
then use a wah pedal for a sound called a “cocked wah sound”
Interestingly enough Griff actually made a video demonstrating
how to use a wah pedal and at aprox 2:34 shows you how to adjust the
wah pedal to get a cocked wah sound. Its just a matter of sweeping the wah in the middle position till you find the sweet spot…
trust me your ears will tell you when it sounds right.
Thanks Griff, you always sound good but to us newbies any info as to pedals, amps etc. Used in the lesson would be a great help.
52 Rhythm Fills and Variations (by Griff Hamlin)
Example 1.18 Slow blues E Flurry Fill.
That’s where I first learned it…you STOLE it!
Awesome lesson !!!
I love how universal the lick is..
Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz, SRV and Muddy Waters all managed to make that little
lick their own… I was actually amazed how you missed one of the most
iconic songs that that lick is based around.
It is the famous R&B instrumental titled ” Green Onions”
by Booker T and the MG’s..
Great little lick to start off the New Year! All the best to you and yours Griff!
Bueno Maestro! Speaking of bends, Stevie Ray played with his guitar tuned lower, one octave, making them bends a lot easier.
I think proper terminology is important if we want to pass along the legacy of music to our children. SRV was NOT tuned lower by “one octave”. That would sound terrible. Please, for the sake of those who have not played long and are trying to learn, please be more accurate.
Hey Al, Gary made a great point on tuning down, which especially makes that bend a bit easier, and yes you are right he got the terminology wrong ( tuned to E flat, 1/2 tone down from standard I believe) but we are all at different levels here on the blog and it would have been nice if you had imparted your knowledge (like Griff) to help Al and others.
I think you mean one “note” lower, which woulb be Eflat tuning, which is also called a “half step”, since a “step” is two notes ( or two frets on the guitar neck, up or down). Stevie Ray probably got this from Jimi Hendrix, who used the Eflat tuning almost exclusively.
This will be great for Jeff our son in law who is just starting out .I bought the playing on the porch so i look forward to getting to look at it soon now that winter IS here & the 22 year old bike shop is slow ! l-o-l.Thank’s Griff Respectfully,Kim
Hey Thanx griff nice little lick. Happy New Year. Ray Martin.
I just wanted to thank you for all the very practical lessons you post. I particularly appreciate the TABS. I was a gigging (even had a touring band from 2000 – 2009) blues guitarist from 1995 to 2011. I’m more or less self taught (and hence have many gaps). I wish I had all your courses when I was first learning (of course technology wasn’t what it is today in the 90’s). For your younger students I would thoroughly encourage them to buy your course. The way you break things down is great and doesn’t involve a lot of music theory. One suggestion I have is to investigate the music of Magic Sam / he died in 1969, but has amp St a dozen CDs out there and he is a hero to many deep blues players. His double stops, triads and the Magic Sam “four chord” are legendary. His intro to Sweet Home Chicago had influenced countless blues guitarists (just a simple double stop – but a tad different than usual). Anyway, keep up the great work, I always look forward to your posts.
For this style of blues, Magic Sam was one of the greatest. I’ve always enjoyed his sound. I just wanted to point out, as a guitar player of 40 years, that there is a mistake. Most of these old blues players (or old jazz players) will tell you that what Sam is doing is an “interval”. NOT a double-stop. A double-stop is when you press down TWO strings with ONE finger (imagine doing an open Em with only ONE finger). Jazz guitarists and classical guys all use this technique. It’s their way of making a five-finger chord.
Griff,
2017 and once again you hit the ground running as you did in ’16!
Everyone who plays or wants to play the blues should know this lick.
Old School & Still Rockin’
Great stuff, but I HATE tabs!
Great lesson and well articulated as usual Griff. I’d love to see some Johnny Winter and Duane Allman licks in future lessons. Both as you know we’re Muddy Waters deciples, Winter more so than Allman, but I am a huge fan of both.
Thanks for the lesson. Will add to my bag of tricks.
jim thanks for the lics catfish/blues simple lics but amazing.
cheers.
Hey Griff,
As usual, very cool Licks, easy to learn. I think you have done this before as I remember the hard bend Fret 2. Can’t name any but have certainly heard these licks and possibly through you or all the BGU courses.
Keep up the great work.
Greetings,
Michael- Australia
Thanks for the lessons griff, I need to start applying them. I love listening and learning to play the blues specially since Stevie Ray Vaughan Jimi Hendrix.
Good lick, a crowd pleaser!
Great lick Griff! Pickers might check out Justin Johnson on YT playing Sky Shackin’. Basically 4 verses of 12 bar in E and he uses this lick multiple times in every verse. Happy 2017 and thanks for your generous teaching!
Another fine example of your style of teaching Griff. I wonder how many people would interpret such a lick in different positions and claim this guitar giant or that guitar giant was responsible for it. If I closed my eyes when you started up playing and not talking it could be Jimi, or any of the others mentioned above. My interest in music, notwithstanding wishing to play that is, stems from the history of it and the origins of just such licks.
On an other unrelated point, I was surprised to be reading Rose Permer’s long piece, totally unrelated to music, attached to your material. I just hope for everyone’s sake she is now off and not a risk to future computer activity generally.
Do not know if someone already saidt it, but you can find a variation of this lick in Griff’s “I believe” from BGIAB-1.
Thanks Griff that was short and sweet but tricky and difficult at the same time. Will work at till I master.
Also used in ‘are you going my way’ lenny karvitz
Griff,
2016 and you hit the ground running!
Old School & Still Rockin’
Thanks griff great lesson will put it to use perfect as always
YOU ARE THE BOMB Griff
it make doing the BGU workbook so much more interesting with these side licks/lessons thrown in during the week. thx
You da Man, Griff. Good stuff as always.
Griff –
Thanks for sharing this one! Idle thought — it seems like it would fit into the E version of “playing on the porch” nicely once I have it down, so now I have 6 licks to mix and match, so to speak, instead of 5! 🙂
Cheers Griff
for the video and quotes
Hey joe
Shaking all over
Honky tonk wowman full bend half bend down one string second fret pull off to open and you will start to get it very Diffrent but same notes
Actually I thought it was more like Les Paul that “invented electricity, ” electric guitars at least.
Just saying Lego47, I maybe think the inference is that Muddy was one of the pioneers of the electric guitar.
Great stuff. I spent the entire night doing this riff. Pain of joy in my finger tips.
thankyou, griff for your ongoing and consistent lessons. You’re a joy to have as a teacher.
Thanks Griff. Great lesson as alwaqys. Can’t wait to try this lick when I get home. Keep up the good work.
A little trouble bending , as expected. But so simple and so original. Thank you
ZZ Top – Fool For Your Stockings on the Deguello album. A little easier to learn from that tab as it’s at the 10th and 12 frets which are easier to bend.
This is great! I find it much easier to bend by pulling down rather than pushing up. Is this considered bad form or a bad habit to get in to ?
Cheers Griff and thanks for another gem.
Blessings and a Happy New Year to you and yours.
I also found the same and wondered whether it was acceptable or inadvisable. It might that “if it sounds good it is good”!
If you bend up an accurate whole step on the 3rd string, it is the same note as the open 2nd string. There are a lot of licks that use that and play the bend, then the 2nd string, and maybe the 1st open string (ZZ Top Blue Jean Blues). It’s also the basis for a lot of Chuck Berry style licks.
So if you pull up, it will work on the demonstrated lick but impede you on these other similar licks.
The lick can also be transposed by using an index finger barre in place of the nut
Great little lesson, Like some folks I wish I could get the lessons that you offer, I take everything I can and I think it is paying off, it is fun to do and helps get my mind of the problems for a little while.
I think everybody enjoys what you do for us all and that makes me fell good, many thanks and keep the blues comming
you never fail to capture my attention. Again, Thank You!
Thanks for the lesson ,great simple licks Griff thanks.
THAT LICK IS SO POPULAR AND HAS SO MANY VARIATIONS THAN ANY OTHER ON THE GUITAR. ITS USED BLUES , ROCK , AND EVEN COUNTRY. THANK YOU FOR SHOWING EVERY ONE , I EVEN LEARNED A NEW [ YOUR ] VERSION OF IT.
KEEP THE GOOD WORK GRIFF
ZZ Top version of Brown Sugar starts with the exact lick too!
I like to alternate between the 12 fret octave and the open fret lower octave to give this some really hot leads. Thanx Griff and Happy New Year! Let it ring out Like George Thorogood does in a Ton of Songs. He’s all E Minor and G Major Pentatonic and really helps with his long songs in learning lead in these positions.
zz-top brown sugar
Hey Griff,
thanks for yet another great riff. I enjoy putting scales and riffs together that feel good and sound good to me and not necessarily anyone else. Good therapy for an old Vietnam vet.
Similar, but in this case I think the pull-off is only to G# rather than G, but otherwise Led Zeppelin “Bring it on Home” uses a similar riff (and occasional live versions of “Black Dog” used the same riff as an intro).
I love that lick, although my initial effort sounds nothing like yours. I have a lot of work to do!
Thanks again for great guitar riff tips keep it up
This was right down my blues like licks. Thank you Griff
Very Cool lick Good as usual, Thank you Griff.
Thank you Sir Griff Hamlin …
Thanks for the lessons griff I need to start applying them. I love listening and learning to play the blues specially since Stevie Ray Vaughan Jimi Hendrix.
Thanks Griff , nice lesson .
thanks for this excellent tip. I will use this in my wood sheding.
I would love to be able to play like that but my fingers wont co-operate.I’ll keep trying though.
Hey Griff
great pick I am thinking Led Zeppelin house of the holy used this riff not the song but the album (cd for the younger generation :P)
just got my Blues Guitar Unleashed pkg is just what I was looking for
Thanks for the help!!
John
Similar to “Smoke on the Water” ?
Hi Griff
Thanks for the lesson! I am still paying for my $150.00 Epiphone guitar. There letting me do payments and I don’t have a lot of money. But just playing my guitar hearing and feeling the music going through my fingers and out the guitar=I forget about money and am happy with out money when I’m playing my $150.00 Epiphone. I often wonder how a good guitar would sound when I play it. I know my tonnage is off and it needs a tune-up. So when I ever I get the money to buy your lessons I will do it asap. My Guitar the top/Head plays good but have way too much space at the body where the pickups are. The strings go up and up from the top to the body.
Thanks’
Peter
Hey Peter
might be able to help ya with the string issue. most cheaper guitars play just as good as the high end guitars it is really more about setups of the guitar. you can lower the string down at the bridge end and also you can set the intination there as well. go to you tube and look up setting up your guitar keywords would be pickups, string height, and intination.
keep rockin that epi I own a few myself
John
aka
CB527 if your a member
wood type and pick-ups also make a big differance
Hi Peter,
Guitar sales men will hate me saying this but as long as there is no obvious fundamental faults with a guitar (bent or twisted neck) and the frets are in the right place then a cheap guitar will play or can be made to play as well as an expensive one.
This playability also applies to acoustic guitars but not to pure acoustic tone and volume of course but once amplification is introduced then all of the above holds true.
Where I grew up there was an old black guy jazz guitar player in the town who specialized in ‘Jango’ style guitar and he would often take down the cheapest guitar in the music shop and dazzle us youngsters. In those days (early 50’s) Fender and Gibson guitars were not available in the UK. I had to make do with a plywood copy of a Gibson and a Hagstrom electric guitar from Sweden.Rather like some makes of cars there is some brand snobbery with guitars. But just as owning a Ferrari wont make you a better driver, owning a £4000 guitar wont make you a better player.
Get someone to fine tune and adjust your Epiphone you wont need anything else. One last point if you had a £4000 guitar would you take it out Gigging? Probably not.
It sounds like you Epiphone needs a small truss rod adjustment to bring the strings closer to the finger board. If you can find a hex key that fits its easy to adjust at one end of the FB or the other. Just make small adjustments (less than quarter turn) retune and see what it’s like.

My God … is nowhere safe from such BS.
This ad is in VERY POOR taste and certainly not appropriate for a BGU lesson. And now that I come to think about it, not appropriate anywhere!!!!
Tony Jo White uses this lick (among others) in “Polk Salad Annie”
This has been one of my favourite lessons, great stuff cheers.
This is the most fun I’ve had with my clothes on in ages.
Thank you again Griff, I am not only playing better and better with you instructions …my love to play is growing exponentially …
Thanks for the post. I tune my guitar in the south african style called double firsi or double first which means the high E is tuned to D. But most of this is very helpful. Thanks so much!
famuos Eddie Van Hallen style called “d” tuneing. you can get a set up for your string tree that has a knob to tune the “e” to a “D” with a turn of a knob.
thanks griff for the memory. seen you do this before. thanks .
Being healthy to travel around the earth. Have a beach home near the water.
Love that one , Steve Ray is one of my favorites, also Muddy Waters,I would love to play half that well. Thank You for the lessons. I’m really doing so much better.
Great lesson GRIFF! You’ve really inspired me and stepped up my game.
thank’s GRIFF.i’m slow but i love your way of teaching. SPIKE
Hi Griff,
Thanks for the Cat Fish Blues syle lick it’s very effective.
Could the same lick be played in other keys up the neck ? (or is that a dumb question?)
Keep up the good work.
Charlie

Thanx Griff going to try it out in Sweet home Chicago which im learning at present.Trying to put my own take on it as looking at Clapton,BuddyGuy and then Freddie King they guys do it different each time iv watched them. Its all good though and im getting there. Pity I cant sing though!! Cheers Griff
Thank You Griff for the licks. Great as always ………J.P.C…….
George Rhodes,
I think that it’s a tie on the fourth string. Matt.
Hi Griff
I am a bit confused! In the video you are bending the A on the third string but on the Tab you show bending the forth string E.
Tabs are always upside down. So u count from the top not the bottom. Make sense??
Love that you put the tab right on the screen below the video and if I want to download I can. Great way to teach!
Thank you for the Catfish blues lick top and the Voodoo Chile lick , top stuff.
I just keep getting better and better, all sincere thanks to you Griff great stuff.

I enjoy reading through an article that will make people think. Also, thank you for allowing for me to comment!
Griff,
I don’t know if you do requests, but do you know scuttlebuttin by SRV, or Great White Buffulo by Ted Nugent.. I have the SRV book with the tabs, but still cantbfigure it out, and the Nugent, well I can’t find anything with tabs from him…..
Thanks
Griff,
Hey I like the tele your using, sounds sweet. I also noticed the Mannys music, is that one of your sponsors? Well, I just wanted to leave a comment about this lick. I’ve been using it for a long time, and I’m glad to see someone is teaching it. I kinda figured it out on my own, can’t wait to see some more licks like this, the way you teach it, makes it easy to learn…..
Anyhow, thanks, for this and others..
Mack
Not sure if anyone mentioned it but ZZ Top’s Brown Sugar uses the lick.
I must get across my admiration for your kind-heartedness for those who have the need for guidance on this idea. Your personal commitment to getting the solution along had become rather productive and have continually allowed folks just like me to realize their aims. Your insightful help and advice indicates a lot to me and even more to my colleagues. Best wishes; from all of us.
Great riff Griff and lets not forget that it was

Great movie Larr, haha I re-watch it every year and try again to learn them solos !! self torture at it’s best.
これは、本当に、おかげありがとう 私に答えて!
What I like about these licks is they sound almost as good on an acoustic.
Great stuff, keep em’ coming.
PS; I’m not through with the acoustic blues unleashed yet, but as we say over here, it’s ‘work in progress’. But very rewarding !!

Top riff ,one of these days i will pick up my guitar again…………………
Thank you a lot for providing individuals with remarkably marvellous opportunity to discover important secrets from this web site. It is usually so terrific plus packed with a lot of fun for me personally and my office acquaintances to search your web site at least 3 times in a week to read through the fresh guidance you have. And of course, I am also usually motivated with the incredible inspiring ideas you serve. Certain 1 areas in this article are completely the most efficient I have ever had.
Thanks Griff,
Nice little lick,as always well explained.
regards Chris
Great Lick !! U right – Not as easy as it looks but a little practice and it works & sounds great. Thanks a bunch.
Griffo. G’day. What’s your amp and tone settings. Absolutely love this stuff
Griff,I really like this lick. Can apply to many songs as you explained. Thanks for sending. Mike Z.
Hey Griff, I watch your videos every chance I get, have been for the past year or so and have learned a lot, even how to hold my lower lip when I play….lol! I mean, really, I find myself clenching my lips like you do, is that just plain weird or what? I never used to do that and I’ve been playin’ for four decades or more…lol! Now I have to “untrain” myself. Too funny!
Man thanks for this very effective little lick. Just read your blog and then heard this on the radio: Edwin Collins, A girl like you. Same lick if I’m not mistaken.
Griff
Nice!
About the movie: the storyline and casting might be questionable, but the Ry Cooder soundtrack definitely isn’t: it’s remained on my playlist since I saw the movie. A great recreation of a wide range of blues styles, without resorting to pastiche. Much recommended.
Simon
Thanks for once again making something that sounds complicated simple…or at least look simple.
Thanks that cool lick will be put to good use. I love findings like this putting together riffs and runs really helps me in every type of picking I do, I will work this in on the acoustic as well. You really helped make this week end a success. I took a break from making my basement environmently friendly for my guitar collection, and bang…….there you where to show me why I love the guitar so much. Gave one of my girls a new phrase.
Good lesson,
I’m remembering some of the stuff I learned a long time ago.
Now I can expand my song book.
I just need some people that are good to play with around my area.
Thank you again.
jim
I am having trouble I am 78years oleander I have arthritis in my hands So I can’t play much lately but I still watch all of your emails and really enjoy the lessons. Thanks for now and good health. To you and family …Leon
What blues amp do you use to practice with and perform with?
That was a pretty sweet little lesson, thanks Griff.
Great lesson as always, Griff, thanks so much…
When are you gonna teach us how to pick up women for the relief side of being a guitarist?
I love your playing. Look upon you tube my wife rigor mortis and you will see me playing with John Entwhistle on the Old Grey Whistle Test. Talk to you soon Eddie Jones.
excellent… thanks griff! as a 17yr old i saw him do voodoo child… awesome…
thanx Griff !!!! As usual a top notch lesson man. Your clear split screen method cracks the ice as clean as a whistle on steroids! Also, To Alan Durden Just highlight TAB with mouse then right click. Click copy then go to your word processor and paste it into a document! ( Do I need a split screen for that one?) CHEERS FROM the Land Down Under.
man I like that & it’s so ease to play, thanks
Thanks for the Riff Griff , Cheers !!
cool I like the short lessons, they are the best.
can we download the tab somehow.
Once again you share these beautiful licks. It’s a wonderful thing that you do. May the force be with you.
That would be a nice lesson about different timings!
Very cool lick especially for beginners! I Like it when you teach these things even if I already know what you teach it is still good to remember a lot of licks I forget some times being 61 next month my brain isn’t as sharp as it was lol Later keep those free licks like that coming in being on disability I can’t afford courses so yours helps! As a matter of fact I still have that free course you made about
music theroy and a few more> GOD Bless
Thanks again Tramp
Cool lick! On the tab, it shows 12/8 time. The only time im comfortable counting is 4/4. Do you have lessons on how to properly count the various time signatures?
Hey Griff
I’m 71 and I’m still learning thank you for your help.
Dave S
i play ukulele and use these techniques, thanks Griff

Thanks Griff. Always pleasant to listen to your licks.

Love the ‘Many’s Music’ T-shirt Griff! Verry cool!
I remember full page ads for Many’s back in 79-82 in Guitar Player magazine.
Cool riff too 😉
Thanks Griff, this is a really useful lick up and down the neck in various forms and timing
Walter Trout uses it a lot to great effect
NICE ONE GRIFF,HOW ABOUT BACK IN BLACK,ACDC

I thank you so much…a work in progress.
I like it!
Hi, Griff,
I like the Muddy Waters style very much
Thanks for the lessons.
Is it possible that you can send me the tab of manish boy by Muddy Waters.
Thanks a lot
Juchi
These are so good. Very clear and precise lessons professionally laid out and perfectly paced. “How do you play that bit?” Is a question I’m being asked a LOT more these days. Theyre going to love this one. Thank you!
Alright Griff
Great lesson !!! Jimi Hendrix always inspired me to love the guitar … I always wanted to know how he made it sound so AWESOME . I really enjoy learning from your teaching technics… Now I’ll start to learn one of Jimi’s many tricks . Thank you much … Adios Amigo
Thanks for a great mini lesson. You have a very clear style of teaching blues.
Griff,
Great stuff, thanks man.
Tried this on my acoustic….oh my poor fingers! Then tried it on my electric…So much easier! LOL
Thanks for the lesson, I love this riff!
Awesome stuff Griff thanks!
Griff. I am a three fingered (missing middle finger on my fret hand) guitar player and with your lessons I am finding out I can play way more than I than thought I could. Thankyou so much. Phil
Hi, Now I am understanding how them fab old riffs we’re played. Interesting lesson! Cheers Griff
Very cool lesson especially the Voodoo Chile riff. I like I like and I think I shall work on this one tonight. I have heard this riff a million times over the years and in different variations but when you want to pull it out of quagmire of music where that little riff is logged all of a sudden you go blank. Paul
Hi Griff a good riff to master its not as easy as you make it look but I will get it thanks again Griff for all your help.
This stuff is great. These small lessons have been taking the mystery out of blues solos.
Until I ran across your vidios I was stuck in rythemville with small licks in the root position that got stale real quick. Thanks for your great teaching style.
Good lesson. How do you get that growl sound via your amp? Do you have a special pedal?
Thanks Griff,
I’ll have fun with that one all day.
jimmyrs
I always hear guitarists using this lick when they’re checking their tuning between songs.
Hey Griff,
Just purchased the Blues Unleashed DVD and the solo DVD. I am enjoying it very much. Thanks you for all the follow up emails and support.
Great lick! Have not been to Manny’s in a number of years. The last time was for a guitar demo with my friends John Abercrombie and Tom Doyle. Henry, the owner, would send me equipment all over the world. THE OLD DAYS.
Griff, I have just been reading through some of the huge list of comments from your followers; they are from all over the world, thanks to the Internet, which you have ably and generously harnessed for the joy of others.
There is a kind of evangelical theme about what you are doing. I count myself so lucky that I happened on your site and emails. The way the material is presented, and made available so readily and in so many useful forms, is thoughtful and rewarding. You are, as a bonus, such a friendly, easygoing guy with no pretentiousness that I find myself just happy to listen/watch you without actually practising sometimes. I feel I am very much not alone in this. Accept my real gratitude.Chas
Great sound from simple steps – what a generous guy you are, Griff
Thanks a million.
This clip has answered one of the questions I has eluded me for years!
Whoops! I think misspoke on a previous post. I guess I had too much eggnog. I got upside down. Thought you said 4th string. My apologies to the Master. I was confused, but figured out the error in my ways.
Thanks griff. Always look forward to your vids. You have tought me
Loads. Thanks once again
I have not got your blues unleashed yet but these small lessons help me
to move in that direction. of course ! nice stuff. thank you
Griff you are one cool guy and I thank you for licks like these. I’ve only been playing around with the guitar for a couple of years and I haven’t really put the time in but you inspire me to stick with it, Thanks a million
Hi Griff. I am a amateur guitar player for 15 years and have recently. started to practice all over again ( my job was more important and took up much of my time ). Really a relief seeing as well as hearing the Riffs as over 75 Guitar mags. can’t do… Thanks much ! playing as we speak…..
THAT SOUNDS GREAT. WANT TO PURCHASE VIDEO REAL SOON. U MAKE IT SO EASY TO PLAY. THANK U.
Your lessons are a welcomed break to an otherwise stressful day at work.

Each time I watch them I am pulled out of my depression for a while. It is irresistable I have to try it.
You bring much good to humanity!
Congratulation! Félicitations!
Thank you so much!
Lakshman
Griff I have purchased your initial Blues Unleashedand DVD program. It is excellent. I speak from the perspective of bring a professional electric bass player for 50 years. I initially studied guitar as a young lad and took weekly 1/2 lessons fron an older proficient guitarist. He used the Mel Bay method. It was slow and and the s ong sections in the course were simple not even clost to hip or cool. So most of what I learned aboutvtock, blues doul. was from watching other contermporsry guitarist. I spent thousands of hours and imitating the licks and chord patterns based on listening to struggling by imitation for several years to learn how to play. Although I becme goo enough to get into good club bands what your course methodolgy shows is pure top notch smart ! You are a fine musician and smart.
Ed Gibson
Guitar made easy!! Great lesson!!
Griff,
I am not much of a blues player. I like to think of myself as more of a troubadour but I really like your lessons and learning. You lay them out really well, you show both hands and you don’t try and show off. Some other instructors I have watched tend to do a great job for a short time but seem to get bored and then just want to show you how good they are. It is obvious you are a terrific instructor and player. Thanks.

Hi Griff- Happy Labor Day weekend. Thank you for all the tips, tricks and great lessons!!
Hi Griff,
I was hunting for some easy blues lessons, atlast it is over…
thanks a ton….
Hi Griff,
I appreciate receiving your videos, and always look forward to those that follow. You provide a simple, common sense approach to guitar, without attempting to astound and amaze us with your very obvious talent. This is refreshing to me, and I’m always able to glean new knowledge from your offerings.
Thanks Griff, always dig your emails. Can hardly wait for the next one.
awsome,thanks again!!!!
Nice one Griff,

This is awesome stuff! Keep it coming Griff!

Hey Griff. That’s right. Dat bloke Muddy Water – he evented electrinity.
Rock me mama. Always good stuff Griff. River Tramp. Western Australia.
Griff, even though I received this one awhile ago, it is still a great little riff to play with and then improv from there. Thank you for the dedication and hard work you put into teaching those of us who are wanting to become good Blues guitarists.
PS: To all of you who may happen to read this; Griff just came out with an ACOUSTIC BLUES GUITAR set of DVD’s that he is now offering. I just purchased my set this morning by phone. Here is the link if you didn’t get notified yet. AWESOME, THANK YOU GRIFF ! ! ! Blessings

I LOVE THESE SHORT LESSON I SEEN TO LEARN FASTER THANKS
That was ‘sweet” I look forward to getting your CD. Lessons
Hei,Griff,very cool and nice,thanks!
Great demo and easy to follow Thanks for the info.
Ray
Dear Griff, Simple is always good! What amazes me about the guitar is that the most basic riff played with emotion can sound so complete. It never gets boring and yet it nevers sounds the same no matter how many times it’s played. As the nuances of each strum varies, so does the emotion. Like fingerprints, everyones style is unique and everyone can do something different and special on the guitar. I find playing my guitar both frustrating and exhilirating at the same time! Your lessons are just what I need in my never ending search to unravel the mysteries of the guitar….which are usually hiding in plain sight. And doesn’t it always feel great each time you hear something new and different in our playing coming from something we picked up from a new lesson? Your teaching ‘style’ is really great! Thank you
Crossroads by the way 1 of my all time favorite music movies steve vai of coarse (great) and who was the guitar player that stood in for ralph machio, I doubt if it was all him I’m thinking Ry Cooder or maybe multiple players . Enjoyed the lesson Thanks DaveA.
Really like this lick, I can actually do it weak thumbs and all, Thankyou for your talent and your very sincere way of teaching. I find your methods very effective.
Thanks Griff,
I like it. I will work on this one. It all works together. Anything I can learn helps. Thanks
Funny how some of the easiest licks, can sound so meaty.Looking forward to more.(improv).
Nice…. Long live Jimmy Hendrix….. Thanks brother
Great stuff Griff, I’m almost ready to purchase your blues guitar unleashed. I wasn’t sure I could play guitar, but your helping me with that big time. Thanks again, Chris
Nice peace of basic butt extreamly effective early stuff. Thanks GRIFF these are the gems that get lost or misplaced.
thanks for the tips i have been playing for a long time and i am teaching my grandsons to play the tips and dvds make it easer i offered to get them the units but they like for me to show them i think they are doing that to make me feel good and i like it keep up the good work so i will look good thanks
The voice and the video are not in sync in this video and the last 4 or 5 that you have sent to me.
anyway – a segment on open E blues and working up the neck (or down the neck – depending on your point of view) from the open position would be cool also – only because anyplace else you are working the four finger – four fret-box one
-in open E -is the same but just a lil different –
( also – i beg to differ about the basic scale and “blue notes” – if you run the basic – four finger – four fret – scale – – index – pinky – from low E – then – index -ring — index ring – index ring – index pinky – index pinky – to the high E – you can get the “blue” notes – with half step bends -and the fingering drill is much easier to grasp – but that’s just my opinion )
and for the guy that posted “ear training ” – very few have perfect pitch –
if you run the scale – while you’re watching tv – just drill – fast – slow – over and over –
you get finger memory – and also ear training – just work the first box –
and DON”T get hung up on boxes – learn the first – when you have that in your head –
from any one point on the scale – slide up to the next note on that string –
YOU WILL HEAR IT – is the first step out of box one – you need to just sit and work it –
but you have to do the drill – practice is practice – lol
and ever GREAT guitarist – started by doing drills – by long hours of practice –
as much as we would all like to be INSTANTLY great – there just ain’t no way around it =)
again – ohhh – THAT’S how it’s done – lol
but FYI – in your teachings – the middle finger gets little use in the blues scale –
unless you are playing in open E –
my index – ring and pinky – one – three – four – lol
they got more miles on them –
but – with this riff – you can raise a blister (yeah- i did )
you can practice it with the ring finger – use middle for support – as you said –
and tuff up middle SLOWLY – while working on riff –
when i play blues scale in open E – is middle – ring – not index ring pinky –
because top of neck is open – and is the natural way to go
but i worked with this ALL day – because i wanted to get it down and get it in finger memory –
and – i guess on the plus side – have new tuff spot on the ring – but had to take a day off – lol
Would love to have some ear training, can’t do it with my voice as it needs training too -.-
maybe this is a ear training but until its repeatedly done
Good representation of simple licks
Griff, this was fun. I played along a few times, and I am starting to feel comfortable with it!! Thanks Griff. Mike

Great lesson. Short sharp to the point and fun. Griff makes it all oh so simple!
You never cease to pass on great beneficial bits of information so helpful and so much fun to play. Thanks to you Griff…you da Man!

Hey Griff, once again a little bit of explanation goes a long, long way. These little patterns show so much to us ‘students’. I really liked this lesson. Thanks ……….Don
Outstanding Griff, I have always liked that riff. Thanks for teaching it to me. Got to get to my

Griff that was cool, now all I have to do is have my guy’s play that slow blues, Thanks for that lick.
Cesar………….every little bet helps me put thing together.
how great is this.i just love it.not the sore fingers
That’s a pretty tough bend down on the second fret. Sounds killer done right, and makes the bends up the fretboard seem much easier. Thanks Griff.
I’ve played with this lick before and have encorporated versions of it into some of my solos. It’s great and has such neat possibilites. Thanks for sharing!
That’s a great lick, it’s also a callus builder….I hope these keep coming.
Thanks, Chas.
I just bought your BGU course…i also been checking u out once in a while on the e-mails…
Griff u are correct, the reason i bought your blues unleashed is because i am an internidiate axer
and no other teachers out there shows u a step-by-precise step to learn from.
lookfor my name on the BLU Forum…my handle is ALBERT COLLINS…who is my all-time favorite BLUESER, I prefer Albert’s much more than a BB or SRV…too bad Albert bit-the-dust
not too long ago…if he would of lived we would of had 2 or 3 new cd’s to add to the Texas Blues History.
Keep up the Good (instructor) work Griff!!
Paul Nicholas Spiel
Thanks Griff for this info. There was one problem that I was having is when lets say playing in the key of “c”.C is the 1 chord 2 is a “d” minor not major. Now let’s say we’re Playing in the key of A minor does the B turn to Major?
Great stuff Griff. I’m really glad I bought your course back when. There is literally no end to the cool things to be learned.
PS. Muddy had more hooks than a Chicago bass lure. Amazing Rocker!!
[Scarface Johnny Wales]
I have been playing for twenty years as an armature. Your playing on the porch lesson opened the door to improvisation to me about a year ago. These riffs and an e blues pentatonic study in all 5 positions would make a really great lesson together.
Many thanks for your time and effort in putting together such a great newsletter!
Very interesting—-Russ
Tht was real Cool
Griff,I think you are the best guitar teacher I have ever seen.I can follow your teachings and that is amazing for that to happen!.
I love your site and all the little tidbits you throw out. I also love the tone you get in this video. I see the Blues Junior in the background and was wondering if it is a stock set up or if you have modded it, and also, if you could share the knob settings. Thanks for all you do.
Hi Griff, nice little riff. I believe Angus Young of AC/DC plays this riff in Back in Black
Hi Griff, my first time writting. I have really enjoyed your tips and licks you send in the email. I ordered your blues unleashed last year got the course in november and moved from georgia to arkansas in december and my dvds got left out somewhere during the move. But I do have the book and have followed your emails religously. The muddy waters lick was so simple but so good. I have been playing off and on for a long time and really enjoy your teaching style. I have been practicing the all the boxes in different keys, learning more theory is really fun. I am 60 by the way so maybe you can teach and old dog new tricks. I remember reading in one of the guitar mags along time ago, one of the articles, cant remember who’ he said you learn all this theory of how music works, then you throw out the window. Funny but true. Its a process and I have really enjoyed your teaching. Keep in coming.
This is great!!! I may be left handed but it sounds Great on my guitar! Thanks a bunch.
all i have to say is kick ass
Great stuff! You make it seem so easy. But you have given me so much to add to my practice. Thanks
Just great being able to learn such a famous lick, many thanks Griff.

Griff, you always come up with tasty stuff! Keep it up, man!
Uma aula muito didática e prática. Gostei e recomendo.
Love it. do you have a tutorial for Classical Gas? Your techniques for teaching is by far the best I have found online. Your video technique with both hands visible and patience in describing is perfect to learn. Thanks, and I need to know where I can get a list of your tutorials for all styles.
Thanks again,

Hard on an acoustic!
Great lesson – clearly explains one of those building block licks that are so simple but can drive you bonkers trying to figure out for yourself. Thanks!
Nice little lick–I never realized it was that simple. Thanks!
OUT OF THE 20 EMAILS I GET EACH DAY YOURS IS THE ONLY ONE I LOOK FORWARD TO OPENING UP. ANOTHER GREAT SHORT LESSON. THANKS, MY PLAYING IMPROVES EVERYDAY!

Thanks Griff, you are the man!!!!!
Elegance is often simple. Simple is sometimes hard to achieve. Thank you!
Thank you. Now if I could just get my dexterity to work with these old ( 63 year old) fingers lol
How about Boom Boom Boom by John Lee Hooker, or I’m a man by Muddy Waters
the riff makes a guitar sound real hot rock, thanks
Griff,
Another great lesson. I am playing so much better and your technique with how you explain the lessons make it easy to understand and play, I am currently playing acoustic but now I definately want to purchase an electric guitar including some effects pedals.

millions of pats on the back Griff…………………………………………………………….
Hey, Griff … another for the Someday File … thank you.
But drop a note to Dan Hickey … 79 ain’t too old to pick up and work on getting back what once was.
As I pointed out elsewhere, I was only a couple years younger than this gentleman when I bought my electric gittire and your BBG series and starting to make it. Someday, as I indicate above, I’ll go back to my file and work on this newest lick.
Wonderful… keep them coming! (and Dan, guitar’s aren’t that spendy and neither you nor I are too much past the use-by date. Go for it!
Bill
Sounds grreeeaaaaat. I really like this one. Make it one of my favs.
when i bought the blues master lesson i never thought i’d be getting all the extra emails of lick lessons that come each week, which are a great unexpected dividend. keep up the good work griff.
it’s always a warm feeling to find someone who places customer service top on his list.
Rick,
Excellent, always excellent.
I played guitar all through the 50s, and worked my way up from small Skiffle & Rock groups, until I finished up in a 22 piece orchestra playing music for stage shows in London, England. But I still love the sound of the blues.
In 1962 I moved to Canada and, like a fool, never played again; now at 79, I cannot play a simple scale or chord. Probablye too old to learn all over again now.
Today I do not even have a guitar; I gave my beautiful cello built ‘f’ holes Zenith to a friend in Canada, it was identical to Paul McCartney’s first guitar. It was an acoustic that I added pick-ups to. We didn’t have the equipment there is today. And we were poor then.
I’ve been getting your emails with your’ licks’ etc. for quite some time, and I thoroughly enjoy them; I hope they keep coming. It is so nostalgic to this old guy (but sometimes a little painful)!
Thank you for your emails, I look forward to them very much.
Dan Hickey
thank you griff…the “heaviest/coolest” licks are always the seemingly simpilist, but again you prove it’s all in how you personally apply the notes…thanks…
Excellent, sure with practice i’ll get the hang of this lick, sounds great
Bangi’sound Griff, now if I can get my fingers from being sore I am sure I can learn these tunes.
Thanks Wayne from Barry. nice tip . now in sync. cheers.
I was bore in Arkansas, (no apologize needed) I now live in Canada West coast. I still remember the music or the Mississippi blues guitar players, great stuff. thank you.
I totally agree with the two young guys, Dan and David. I really enjoy these little sidebars that reflect the music I have grown with. I keep getting closer and closer to feeling comfortable enough to do a song or two at an open mic nite. Thanks.
I ORDERED YOUR BLUES GUITAR UNLEASHED, AND AM PLAYING MY WAY THOUGH THE CHOURS, THINK IT IS THE BEST ON THE MARKET. I HAVE SEVERAL OTHER , BUT THEY WILL BE IN MY NEXT GARAGE SALL.
I REALLY DO ENJOY THE SHORT E-MAIL LEASSONS. THEY REALLY DO ADD A LOT OF EASEY LICKS THAT I USE WHEN OUR BAND PLAYS.
HUBERT SHERMAN
Great lesson , it is a struggle to get it to sound right but i will work at it till it does .
Thank`s for the tab`s too.
My sincere appreciation for your help .
Billy
Griff
Have to agree with Dan and David being 57 it great to find someone who can clearly translate these riffs. Wish I had found someone like you 30 yrs ago.
Thanks again
Jeff
Thank you Griff, love voodchile, and Lenny Kravzittt song
Hi Griff,
As usual, Great Job showing this cool riff. I can remember when I was 15 years old (1968) sitting with me Hendrix album listening over and over( with all the scratches) figuring it out. Too bad you weren’t around then to show me the way. Keep sending us the videos their Great.
David
55 years old and I finally find a great guitar teacher. Better late than never as they say. Keep it coming Griff.
Thanks.
VERY GOOD I ENJOY THESE SHORT LICKS IT GIVES ME ALOT OF FUN KEEP UP THE GOOD WOKS DENNIS
Short and Sweet. Don’t apolgize for the brevity. too many times I watch these and instructiors RAMBLE. I liked it!!!!!!
Hi Griff, Another great succinct & fully loaded lesson. For Barry download the mp4 or wmv file right click on the file & save as. When you go & view it from your own file it will all be in sync. I had the same issue with Sweet oklahoma & it fixed the problem.
Thanks again Regards
Wayne
Griff,
Very cool lesson! Just played it on my new Taylor and it sounds amazing.
Having the tabs along with your videos is the best.
Old dogs can learn new tricks!
Cheers
Every lesson is a great lesson and I am learning plenty at 69.
Hi Griff can you send me this lesson again please as your voice is out of sync.with the music. Best regards Barry.
It sounds cool
I’m finding bending a full note very difficult. What strings would you use on a Fender Strat
Great lesson,Check out gary clark jrs version Of cfb hes amazing that Cat is easily The best up n comer And most versatile blues artist out there today,oh and try my train pulls in and bright lights big city.you won’t be disappointed,Los
short but sweet lesson. keep up the great work
Great lesson!!!
Awesome lick man, I love dirty.
Thank you much.
Hi Griff thanks for your lessons they are great
Just a quick word
if you could explain more clearly what fingers are on what strings on what frets because you explain it too fast for me & it looks like all your fingers are on all the strings at once i can’t differentiate which finger is on which fret pushing down what string.
thanks Griff
Vic
Something really great about that lick. Thanks for showing me not only how to do it, but how easy it can be if you do it right. Ya just saved me a lot of time & now I own it. Good teachin’.
Great job
You make blues learning easy and possible
and this is coming from an acoustic picker and strummer
Keep up the good work
Peter S
hey griff, thanks for showing me that lick, i;ve been struggling with voodoo chile for 5 years, this is the first time anybody showed me part of jimi;s magic .this may sound crazy ,but when i die i want that song along with SRV,s at my funeral. really cranked up . any way you got me excited with my guitar again. what about the rest of the song. is it 1 4 5 chord progressions or what. i have your ultimate blues course thanks again.
Thanks for this lick; this was a good one….Neil
Found a Johnny Winters version of ‘Rock me Baby’ using the Voodoo Chile version above.
A good lick, I’m a MW fan and do a pretty good slide on Rollin and Tumblin, I can use this. I have your course and it has moved me to the next level of playing
Thanks
Love the Blues, would definitely purchase your Blues Unleashed program because of your honesty and sincere approach to teaching your students.
As soon as I can as I have other financial commitments I would purchase your Blues program.
Mike S.
Very nice lick. Would you care to comment on how you attain that great tone?
P.S. I have been wondering if all these short on-line lessons are on you Blues Unleashed CD?
Thanks
Ralph – for the tone I often use a Custom Tones Ethos Pedal or a Digidesign Eleven Rack. Both are great units for recording situations. Some of the lessons I send out are on the Blues Guitar Unleashed CD, some are just extras. This one is a bonus and not on the DVDs. But if you like this sort of lesson it is my general style so the course would probably work for you.
Griff,
You are amazing. HOWEVER, having downloaded the free licks, one to four and mastered those, I am now lost.
I have decided to try and learn scales OFF another site, as I couldn’t work out where to go next?
Can you help?
Best wishes from “”downunder”
Rex
Griff you make playing the blues so easy with your method. I have always wanted to play a blues lead and now I feel I can do it.The free lessons are great and I am going to sign up before your big 5-0…
fun little piece
Ann…great stuff…loved it.
this is great loved it short and sweet
Loved the lesson and can’t stop playing it.
Is there anyway you can provide the intro to VoooDo Chile?
Thanks again Griff!
Larry
hey, Griff, this is the best one yet for me! just what i’ve been looking for. thanks!!!
Hi There, Grif:
Some good licks,
Thanks, mark
Appreciate all the new licks you keep presenting to us! amazing at how something so simple can sound so good!
Thanks so much for taking the time to dissect this classic 1st position blues lick.
As tough as it may be to get that PHONK on an acoustic guitar, I will keep slogging on until I get the proper bend and release technique down cold. I have been wanting to incorporate a lick like this for a tune I’ve been wanting to write for some time now and this is a perfect fit.
Hi Griff,
Thank you, for nice licks!!!.
everybody knows this is nowhere neil young the grandaddy of grunge thats my contribution Griff
okay so how do you play the next part of lennies tune . I guess its in the key of A .
Thanks Griff
that’s a good one,it’s a little hard to bend on my acoustic,
but it gave me a good excuse to find my Strat.
Harmonica Bob
That was an excellent lesson!
I would love a video about Peter Green’s bend vibrato on songs like Jumping At Shadows or I Loved Another Woman. Keep me comin Griff! 🙂
This is a really nice tutorial for one of the best riffs ever! Thanks Griff, this is killer bro.
Heavy Soul by The White Stripes uses this lick as well.
Is very good thank you for your advice. I will practice this very much
Thank you again
Juan
What Amp (& settings) are you using for this.
Bill
You know all the stuff – i need not continue my need for speedy solos- amazing after 20 yrs to learn your stuff, hope to join soon!
dave
Hi Griff, I just had to ECHO-Echo-echo Ramin’s comments below. Thank you not only for your great lessons, and all the effort that you put into it! But also the inspiration which you’ve given me and many others. Learning to play Blues guitar is a very big part of my life and you’re the inspiration for it. Many thanks Griff and I wish you everything you wish yourself.
Simon K
Dear,Griff really enjoy all your short lessons keep them comeing, actually enjoy all your lessons.
sweet sound man.thanks.
dont give to much away we might get somethin for nothin tight
Cheers Griff what an awesome lick woo hoo.
great lick, thank you. I love your teaching style, interesting not overwhealming. a similar one is the immortal bring it on home by the zepelin. Doug
I just wanted to thank you for your great lessons, and all the effort that you put into it! I for one have learned more from you, these past few months than I ever did during the 20 years I’ve been playing the guitar.I wish you all the best, thanks once again.Ramin
Just, got my Guitar out ,and try to play along with with some of your leason, that you sent me.through my e-mail. Ive just started to play ,more now and injoyed it now more.Ive played drums all my life, but wanted to play Guitar to.Ive haven’t got your DVD yet but i will. Thanks again you help me alot. HANS
Been trying to figure out how to get that bend on that note to sound like that for years. Thought you had to have superhuman finger strength but if you put the helper finger in the same fret its actually pretty easy. Use to play a pretty fair version of Voodoo Chile but never had that lick broken down and played as correctly as you show it. Intro for “Brown Sugar” on ZZ Top’s “First Album” (IMHO some of Gibbons best guitar work) also use this. Isn’t this also the first part of Zeppelin’s Heartbreaker solo but I believe that’s in the key of A.
Excellent job as always Griff, you rock.
Robert
Excellent
Really Great; I really like the new stuff your teaching and the method is outstanding. Really easy to learn and works for me right off. Thanks
Thanks griff pretty simple thanks
G’day Griff, thanks for the vids. I do enjoy them. I did want to say that I appreciate your style. You don’t just show a lick and some TAB, but demonstrate the lick in context. This “catfish” video is a good example. I want to play the sort of blues that incorporates rhythm and cool little licks and you just may be the one to help.
Thanks again, I look forward to what you have in store for us next.
Hi griff,l
thanks for the new licks and lesson you’re sharing.this really works and add my knowledge about blues licks in guitar.more power to you and your company.
love it
Now that little lick I liked, we are now starting to play blues so give it to me dude….That one was cool Griff
Great lesson! I always wanted to learn that lick. Who would have guessed that those two songs had the same lick.
Nice one Griff, I love playing this riff, have for years.
Your lesson style is great, you make it fun and you explain and demonstrate well !
Griff –
Love the tidbits and licks. I also enjoy your presentation style; simple, direct and connecting.
Helps me greatly as a beginner and I look forward to more!
Cheers –
Stefan
this is great…I’ve been trying to learn Voodoo Chile, without anybody showing this amount of detail of this exact part. I knew it was from a blues “standard”, not knowing it was Muddy Waters…now I know BOTH. Jimi, that sly dog…he knew what I needed…ask, and you shall receive. Jimi works in mysterious ways…ect. god references. Thanks for the simple explanation, for without, I’d still be riffing it very poorly.
simple but very well presented & useful. I use use it a lot in practice.
ZZ Top. I hear The Rev. BIlly Gibbons use this lick alot. Cheers
I Have Blisters On My Fingers. FANTASTIC LOVE IT< LOVE IT< LOVE IT
Griff, another fine lick to add to the great ones you have sent. I am still a little slow trying to do it,but it is starting to sound better. Thanks for sending. Mike Z.
Just want to thank you for your efforts.
Your examples are clean, clear and easy to understand. Keep up the quality.
Sicerely, Mike
Nice one Griff as always. Many thanks.
Great lesson and a very valuable cross-over lick which I plan to incorporate into my play. Thanks for the lessons, not to mention all the motivation and inspiration.
Thank you so much for all the lessons ,they are very good and i am trying to get into them steady with the summer coming and i work on the golf course it gets hard for me to find time ,but i will try my best cheers
Thanks for another gift..good stuff…great style of teaching..so helpful!…more please!!….thx Dick.
So sweeeeeeet! I hope you can show us more riffs that go with this one as Hendrix, SRV & KWS did in Vodoo Chile. This song really had a great groove! Love it!
Thanks!
love it!
Griff you have a lot of great lessons, at 56 years old one of my life long desires was to learn how to play the blues, bought my 2nd guitar at 56, first one got taken from me when I was a boy, I gleam what I can from watching your videos and it’s good stuff, one of these days I hope to save enough money to purchase the set of CD’s, on social security disability, so that will be down the road, but until then, thanks for being there.
Griff Great lesson thank you
Thats really cool…..
Thanks a mill
Great. Thanks for the lesson!
your licks are always great & very much appreciated
thanks GRIFF
That is a very good illustration of Muddy Waters style blues.
THAT WAAS FAANTAAASTIC
Awsome licks!!! Thanks for the lesson.
Sweet lesson. Short but way to the point. I hadn’t tied the Muddy lick to the SRV and Hendrix licks. Thanks
very cool Griff i like the lenny kravits thing that i never would have thought on my own unless i tried for about an hour .
Great to have what seems complicated made simple, which it is note for note, but as you state it still takes practice practice practice.
Thanks for the lick.
Great little piece,Grff to help along with other blues licks,or, just practicing! Thanx! Sam.
Great, thanks.
Very useful Thanks.
Same lick with variations to different artist; great lesson.
One of the things I most appreciate about you teaching style if the background explanation of where riffs come from. Great stuff. Thanks.
Cool, it’s always nice to get a little more knowledge on how those simple licks can be payed and where they have been used before with great success…thnx again for a useful lesson once again and like the lick it was a short one, but a good one, keep up the great work.
Very useful.
Grif is a good teacher and I can tell he is a good man for sharing, he takes the complex and makes it simple, which is what a good teacher does.
Thanks, exciting lesson.
I thought about Bring it on Home. By LedZep. It uses the same bend on A to G to E.
Hi Bud, Thanks, you make it look (and it becomes ) easy, a breath of fresh air in comparison to most guitar sites. I look forward to more to come. Alan (past haggis) Scotland…
Good one Griff!
I think Steve is touring Australia at the moment…
He is certainly an innovator and original. Many thanks
bilA
Love that stuff, great lesson, send me as much as you like!
Regards
James
Thank you for your most exemplary web site.
Your efforts are much appreciated.
Best wishes,
Bob #==(o )
Similar lick. Listen to Tab Benoit – ‘Shelter Me’ from TV show ‘Sons of Guns’.
Heavy cajun blues. Search Tab Benoit on YouTube.
Great lessons. Thanks Griff.
Thanks Griff i always injoy love this ! Hank.
Thanks Griff ,
Amazing how easy lots of licks really are but how damn good they sound ,especially with the amp set up correctly . I think you said it all , a lot of it is attitude !!!!!
Great. Thanks
Peter
Excellent lesson Griff .
Thanks.
Hey Griff
That same lick is in SRV’s intro to Pride and Joy.
Thank you for the lessons!
Mike
Cool lesson Griff as usual.
Thanks amigo!
Nice lesson Mon Ami
Hi Griff…. I am short on time ….homebase is dialup….so I have to go elswhere to get hi-speed…
Can’t thank you enough for all the licks I have saved up…..Just need time to get at them…..
Especially enjoyed this lesson
Thanks again….
Hi Griff,
Love your music and easy style of teaching. Great riff lesson – I can use this in several songs too.
Your a star.
Mick
ps Where can I get a “Manny’s Music ” NY Tee-shirt from ?
Yep another good one to try out , keep them coming Griff, I’m still going through the BGU book but its good to divert a bit on the way, great stuff !
i have played for over 40 years and still hit the wrong string sometimes ..
Brilliant … i am a beginner , and i never thought a little lick like that could lead to so much . Thanks bloody brilliant….
I love this lick
Thanks Griff.
Love these they are great.
Cheers
Thanks Griff! Love this lick, 10 min.’s and had down! You”ll make a blues guitarist out of me yet!
Also, love all the courses I bought from you and work on them everyday.
Jim Volpone
Griff, this has been so interesting to me that I picked up my guitar and found I could easily follow this!.I am happy to say I have actually learnt something for the first time in ages!.Thank you very much.
Great lick. It was a cheezy movie but I do like the delta blues parts. Somebody else played all the stuff Ralph Maggio supposedly played.
I love this lick and always wondered how to play it. I’m a rhythm player but want so badly to broaden my playing skills and lessons like this give me the opportunity to do so. So keep-em
coming okay.I save all of your lessons and go over them at least once a week.
Thanks so muc!!!!!!!
John
Great lick ,looking forward to some John Lee Hooker riffs as well THANKS!
Your lessons have been great and I try everyday to block off time to work on them. I am blown away by your theory class! This riff lesson was fun and consise. Perfect for the way I usually squeeze practice while working at home.
BIG THANKS!
robo
Nice short piece to learn.
Thanks,
You always give some great instruction. I am a beginner and immature fo my age (67) and just started to learn guitar (six months ago) and I have bought some of your inst. courses and I appreaciate your teaching methods.
Thank You! It don’t cover it, Been telling all the pickers I come in contact with about your site .
I haven’t made the pro grade ,and have a few physical chalanges.
I love to learn and play and you and your team make it total non stressfull exciting event .
Thanks don’t cover it .
Hi Griff, Manny’s huh? West 48th St. Love that store. Right next to Sam Ash. You get around. My Dad use to buy his drums there. They go back 50 or 60 years. I still remember Manny and his sons.
Since you’ve gone to youtube videos I can no longer watch as I cant download and play fast enuf. This one took me a half hour to play. You olds ones 2 years ago I could just click and watch. You upgrade is my downgrade and I have to find someone else who inst so techy to get lessons from.
It was great Griff and thank you. As i am dyslexic and unable to read music certainly helped.
a great lesson a fine licks from some of the best blues players in my yonger i play with little walters keep up the good work your guitar buddy joetheshakerRBLLEGEND thanks
Nice, short and sweet and well presented.
Hi Griff thank you for this cool unleashed riff. I had the pleasure of tahking photographs of John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy ,and Bo Diddley in a small club here in Victoria, BC Canada I had their permission to shoot the shows. I realised that I was up close, so on the second half of the shows I started to take photo’s of the guitar and what they were playing, this was all available light B&W film . I would like to be able to share photo’s these with your students. Desi
a very positive sound , and short and sweet for a quick study. Keep ’em coming
A great addition to PTTB and blues course I bought a while back. I have learned a lot from you and Bob M.
Please keep them coming.
Thanks
Thanks for the short, but very powerful and useful lick. Great sound and rhythm to it.
Hi Griff Just to let you know your efforts are not in vain. I really enjoy your short videos. Have your blues course ,and have a much better understanding of scales, chords, progressions, and riffs. If you ever decide to make a course consisting of several licks explained like catfish blues be assured I would not hesitate for a second,Iwould be the first to buy it. Might be a good way to increase your revenue,as I would surely not be the only buyer.(food for thought maybe). Just cannot wait for your next e-mail,keep them coming as I am not alone appreciating your great teaching style. THANKS A MILLION.
very helpful thanks
Great riff griff U make it look so easy I’m going to practice it and keep-em coming
sweet lesson griff.
This should read “Muddy Waters’ cover of Robert Petway’s ‘Catfish Blues,'” as this is a Robert Petway song, but I don’t think Petway used this riff in his version. (Sorry for being the blues police, but Petway is an oft forgotten contributor to the blues and this song, which was covered and copied by many and transformed into Waters’ “Rolling Stone,” is a contribution he should be remembered for.)
All of your pointers are very welcome and needed to perfect my playing and having fun doing so
I have been having a little trouble with Voodoo chile this new lesson helped alot.
Thanks Griff . Noel
yeah, that lenny kravits…real creative, inventive guy, huh? not….thanks for the insight – makes a great case for why Jimi and SRV would tune down a half step…..
really cool cant copyright a lick
Thanks Griff…..you dont know how much i appreciate your lessons…..From Nova Scotia, Canada
Thank’s Griff
Another grate lesson
From Western Australia
You are one of the best teachers on the net. Thanks
Makes guitar seem soooh simply. More please.
Thanks Griff
Karol from Poland.
Great lesson. Man, I do appreciate your style. Thanx
awesome lesson, very useful
Hey, many thanks for some really useful info. I used to think that playing Voodoo Child was way beyond me….this has inspired me to revisit this.
Griff,
This lesson will make my guitar talk the way I want it to. Thanks sooo much!
I LOVED this lesson!!! I will add this to my daily practice with hopes of capturing this lick as a piece of what I most want to emulate! Thanks SO much, Griff!!!!!!!!!!!!
Griff, Thank you so much for these ‘short’ lessons. Believe it or not, I have incorporated some of these ‘lics’ into some of my Country Gospel presentations. I have been playing a melody/rhythm style for many years and these new things you are teaching me adds a bit of ‘color’ to the music I play! Thanks again!
luv the lick….thanx for all u do. I am always amazed at how you can pack so much info in so little time..thanx again…Hope you have a great year!
Hi, I’ve been messin’ with this lick in a few forms, a different version of ‘catfish blues’ and intro of John Lee Hooker’s ‘Dimples’ but it was good to hear that it is also in ‘Voodoo Chile’ still trying to get my head round using the wah on the intro to that (slight return).
happy new year
Ken
Hey Griff…
Cool!! Thx! And, Hey! Was messing around with this, and, realized…this is that part I was foggy on .. in ZZTop’s ‘Brown Sugar’!! =) Right there..I already found something else this is played in. Verry Cool! Cheers to Ya and Happy New Year’s too. … Richella
I can relate to the Ralph Maccio story. I was a kid from New Jersey who took off for parts unknown, out West, with nothing but my ’66 Epiphone Wilshire (they REAL one, with the mini humbuckers) and a hat I thought I looked cool in.
Ended up in a band in LA, opening for the Jefferson Airplane. Not bad for a kid from Jersey.
And yes, I would sell my soul down at the Crossroads to play like Clapton!
All in all, it was, after all, a movie about a young guitar player who sought to hone his chops up and down Highway 61 (or the highway, the highway they call Highway 49). Props to the movie, because it’s a dream we all secretly dream of living.
How you can play in your band, produce training videos, and find the time for these free little teaching ditties is amazing. Oh, yeah, and look cool as ice doin’ it. We’re not worthy, but grateful.
Keep ’em comin’.
PS – Nice shiny guitar, too. You can see where the neck is still wet. Fresh strings really bark, don’t they?
Griff, How do you get the tab for this lick
Wow,I`m just learning, bought a scales book, and never realized how many great blues songs that can be played in the E blues-scale,Thanks for opening up a new page for me
From messy to magic. Thanks Griff.
thank you for a great lesson Griff, you do good job of breaking it down!!
I THINK YOU ARE DOING A GREAT THING,,THANKS AND KEEP IT UP MY MAN
Another great riff , keep em coming Griff.
I have really enjoyed learning these new lics. I like the way that it is presented and broken down. There are a ton of great guitarist out there but not all of them have the talent to share their talent like you. Thanks so much for sharing. God bless you and your family and have a very Merry Christmas. I look forward to learning more lics. Oh, have a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year too!!!!
You Need Love, by Muddy Waters.
just spent the last 2 hours creating lots of good things with just these last few little pointers!! It’s amazing how you get to a point where you just need a few ‘new’ tid-bits from somewhere unfamiliar or you stagnate on repetition. thanks…………D………
Thanx riff,Keepm comin,Its helping me much.
Thanks, Griff. You’re a natural at instruction. I always look forward to another lesson notification in my inbox. You’re the best!
Similar riff: Still a fool-Hubert Sumlin
I like
That riff can also a be good addition when test-driving guitars–a time when my mind usually goes blank. FYI, I also like that cheesy “Crossroads” film. If you BGUers haven’t seen it, do so. Steve Vai and Ry Cooder do most of the playing.
Thanks for the riff Griff. It is these types of small riffs that I call
‘building blocks’ towards becoming a better player!
Griff, thank you for this quick lesson on a riff that is so enjoyable to listen to…
Great blues / rock lick. easy to master and can be used dozons of ways.
Great job Griff, it sounds great , thanks a lot
Yves
Is this lesson on the “Blues Guitar Unleashed” course ? Sounds really cool.
I LIKE IT !!! Lots of built in fun.
Thanks Griff
Great Lesson Griff!
Eric makes a good point
Thanx Griff. Good lesson and great payoff for time spent.
This is a nugget. The spirits of McKinley Morganfield and Hubert Sumlin are smilin’.
Thank you and Happy Holidays to you, yours and all.
you could add [bring it on home ]to this list Griff , just one favor to ask on your lessons if you could take 30- 40 seconds to show your amp set up and guitar knob, bridge selections to get the sound your working with your lesson that to me is so very helpful I don’t know how many other people would like that thanks Eric Seeley , all I can do is ask thanks again
this’s good stuff
Griff, the Catfish Blues example sounds fairly gritty. Are you using an effects box or just relying on your amp settings? Thanks
GRIFF – YOU ARE VERY TALENTED. I THANK YOU FOR SHARING.
Great stuff, has “blues” written all over it 🙂
Awesome as always thanks griff
Thanks Griff. Enjoyed the lesson. Sweet little clip.
Pretty sure it’s used in Buddy Guy’s Thank me some day.
thanks Griff, this is the missing link riff that I have been looking for. pablo
Great sound! Thanks! Al
Sweet….blues
Now that was fun !!
Hey Griff,
Great simple lick, not that easy but once
you have it. ooch!!!
Tks,
Moha
Thanks Griff. Simple but powerful lick. I notice that in “Are you gonna go” they briefly move the lick up a couple of frets as well. Nice!
Absolutely great as usual !!
May I endorse what Vern said below about Bob Murnahan. My situation is identical to Vern’s. Bob simply has not delivered.
On the other hand, you do Griff !! Many thanks. Brian
Very much enjoyed this very powerful sounding blues lick, with clear simple explanation. Excellent many thanks Griff.
if its good enough for Griff n George Harrison its perfect f’me! thanks Griff, your an ace! ,lester.
Thanks Griff. I enjoy receiving all your licks and songs. Thank you for the effort you put in to bring this to us.
Thank you!!!
Hey Griff,
Thanks for a gem of a lick…I’ll have to practice and perfect it.
Cheers mate..See you in 2012
Rock on….
Thanks for all your help,I’ve been using your methods you teach and doing well. Also I have a cool blues and classic rock band that plays at our restaurant about every three weeks and they asked me
to join them next time they play. I’m very excited and nervous about it, it’s been 20+ years that I played with a band. But I feel I can do this. Just think of it as jam tracks and I should be good to go. So wish me luck and ask the guitar gods to look down and be with me that night.
PS. The band is “Crossroad Connection” Check them out, there on Facebook
Great lick, you always make it so easy to learn. Also, the split screen is great feature.
Hey y’all I enjoyed this particular bit, I’ve been playing around with this type of lick. Also I like the split screen on the demos.
That was cool Griff !!! Thanks, little licks like this are great to warm up with.
Griff!
Thanks for the insight on the Muddy Waters lick! I believe its worth the learning!! Will perfect and use!! Again Thanks!
Bravo Maestro-Bravissimo!!
Cool stuff Griff… like it. Very helpful.
Hi Griff, this is a complaint but not about you. I have purchased both your BGB and BGU. They are both fantastic. I notice you recommend courses produced by Bob Murnahan. I also purchased his Pentatonic Power Insider (lead guitar tactics). With this course, you receive a lesson each week for 52 weeks. He also offers a complete money back guarantee. I received regular lessons up to week 27. Then they stopped. I sent approximately 25 to 30 emails but never got a response from Bob.
I finally contacted Click Bank who handles all the sales and they communicated with Bob and I finally received lesson 29. After not receiving lesson 29, on Nov 18 I wrote on his forum about this and he wrote back that lesson 29 would be out in a few days. It has never been sent. The kicker is now I am receiving daily emails offering his new “Major Scale Course” that is also supposed to be for 1 year. If you have frequent communication with Bob, perhaps you could mention this situation or perhaps you might want to think twice before recommending his courses. Thanks and very best regards.
Vern
Maybe short but, sweet!
More ammo, Thanks, Griff!
Great Stuff, short, concise and effective. Love these tidbits of information.
one of those licks that every blues players need in their pocket…thanks…later.
cowboy
Awesome short lick, i will use it…..thanks Griff
A great lick indeed and greatly demonstrated by Griff!
Nice little lesson, Griff, and I am not ashamed to say that I like the blues movie “Crossroads” that you referenced 🙂
As usual, your lessons are extremely helpful. A simple but powerful lick. Thanks for laying it out so clearly. Having a good experience with your BGU course.
Perfect timing ….. last two weeks I’ve been attempting to ‘get’ that lick and I’m almost there when your lesson arrives.
Quite where to take it next escapes me right now but it’s all grist for the mill.
Thanks very much Griff …. a joyous Christmas to you and yours.
Superb stuff as always, Griff. Greetings & thanks from Toronto!
THANKS !!! great licks to fool around with Saweeeet !!!
Thanks Griff, my favority nasty, nasty lick. Sounds like you really mean it.
A pearler of a piece that will have me looking for my Maton as soon as I get home. Clear and v.handy. Snaps Griff. Cheers from Melbourne AU.
Great stuff !!! Thanks Griff
COOL from down under! Thanks Griff
