Chances are that you’ve run across “box 1” for playing the pentatonic/blues scale…
But you might not have realized that most of your favorite blues riffs from your favorite blues songs also come from that scale, and often from that pattern.
I’ll run through 5 easy ones today with you, dig it!
Got a favorite “Box 1” riff I missed? Let me know in the comments below, please!

Are the 5 licks included in any lesson you sell ?
This was a great back to basics lesson. I’m still working on keeping my fingers closer to the fretboard. Thanks a million Griff!
Agreed
No need to even run thru box 1 Griff. If they don’t know it by now they ain’t been paying attention. Very widely used and can get a lot of mileage out of it. Nice riffs
Did you know box 1 by osmosis?
This is classic acoustic but definitely pentitonic. “Aimee” by Pure Prairie League.
Richard above referre to a “Lead Countin Course” but I cannot find that title in your course catalog. Does it have a different name that I could search for? Thanks
“Rhythm Figures For Blues Lead Guitar”?
I use 4K Video Downloader
Free. They ask if I want to upgrade but I never have,
Hi Griff,
I really enjoyed this lesson on Riffs. Spent the whole afternoon learning, counting and varying the tempo. Great fun for a slow Sunday in 95 degree Tucson.
I have been trying to download this video into video surgeon and I keep getting error messages. Do you have any suggestions as to how I can download this video?
I just got Video surgeon, and DL surgeon and nothing would download, they sent me some steps to get it loaded properly. Not being technically astute, I still haven’t used it correctly. I got it because griff recommended it a while back and now he is recommending something else. :(.
if anyone has ANY simple tips on using VS please post them I’d appreciate all the help I can get LOL
Video Surgeon is a peice of crap. You would be better off using Audacity, with the AI feature that available on Windows.
As the instructor provides linking to YT, this is a great time to start learning how to use the YT viewer.
YT has keyboard commands. Take time to look them up. For example, while watching a YouTube video, you can pause the video by push K.
At the bottom of the YT viewer on the right side is a gear.
Click on the gear and note what the viewer is ale to control.
The CC button, when clicked, will turn on subtitles if they are provided.
Often you can click on the gear and change the subtitle language.
Hey Griff-U usually post “Tabs”—Wazzup—-It would just make it a bit easier for us to learn these riffs–altho Ur walk thru is very good–Tx
Agreed, would love the tab.
I addressed that in the video, I did not provide them on purpose. The goal is to see the riffs in the shapes and get off the page
Yeah, these are easy enough to play without the tabs – good call!
Cruel mistress Griff! (kidding) I can read tabs and I know box 1 very well. Maybe It is time to see the notes in the boxes rather than on tab sheets.
As a Low Vision/Legally Blind Musician, I find the Tabs very helpful. I am dependent on them. I sometimes have to print them out and put them into a machine I acquired from the VA. Not only does it do extreme magnification , it has a filter for color and spectrum s.
But I get it Griff, dependency can limit what you might pickup. with you it is rinse and repeat. Just the other day, after about an hour and a half of working on a particular riff fine tuning fingers and ear i got up to refill my tea glass. Walked down the hall and I hear doo do do dooooo do from the kid’s room. lol

The last one is similar to Willie Dixon’s “You Shook Me”. Good Riffs.
Thanks
Just started on you lead counting course a few weeks ago. Applying it to this was really helpful. Thanks Griff.
Actually enjoy these occasional “back to basics” lessons. Refreshing memories for the fingers. Much appreciated!! Thx.
