Lesson 3: Neck Note Practice

Russ

Griff says we really don't learn the neck note positions until we challenge ourselves with the metronome. I've started the Circle of 5ths with the C as he's suggested.

Truth be told, I've been toying with C and G for 5 or 6 months, hoping they would sink in without thinking about them. Apparently I hadn't toyed with them enough, because they shouldn't be taking as long as they are to get to a metronome.

Speaking of which, here are C and G note positions.
I about jumped out of my chair the first time I got all the way through C and G with no mistakes.

Ha! Looks can be deceiving  ::) . That was about the 40th take  and I kept about 14 recordings of it  ;)

Oh, and I started B last night  :)

I think I'm gonna have to slow down for a while. For every attempt I record, I delete around 10 screw up attempts  :-X . I think I just need to let these sink into my mind and hand a little longer. I don't have the spare time it would take for learning the circle in a month. Maybe in 2 to 2 1/2  :-/  :)

Playin' for the fun of it.
Good one Russ your doing well. I think that your right not to set yourself a target time to cover the whole range of note, all said and done that's one heck of a lot of data points to commit to memory.

Maintain what you've done to date into a startup practice schedule but don't forget to have some fun with selected musical challenge. The ABGU will provide some useful diversity and the thought of playing Down To The Station is gripping, well it is for me.

Cheers.  :)

Starting on the "easier" half of the "12 Step Program".

Started F#: I had originally written the wrong tab for F# on the B string as 8 instead of 7. You'll see me comment how it doesn't "sound" right.

I'm actually surprised I hit the last 3 notes. I was having a small party in my head, screaming that I was actually going to get it right.  ::)

Only 4 more note series to go. I'm psyched  :D

Hey Russ nice going.. I and I suspect a few others have been following your progress with this note learning.. you are obviously doing really well.. It will be interesting to see what a difference knowing the notes can make when it comes to playing.. I myself have started the process as far as c and g so far but it tends to be the last thing on my to do list and therefore sometimes doesnt get done at least not on a daily basis.. perhaps I should bring it to the top? Anyway keep up the good work  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Russ, as you progress to the C# are you memorizing it separately from the C or are you using your knowledge of the C to move around the fret board with the C#?

Diresteve,

I recommend warming up with the C and G even if you have to use a tab sheet (you can download them from my other posts if you wish), and just going through them 2-3 times. After a week, you will probably have taught yourself the progression without even knowing it. Can't hurt to give it a shot, right?

Luckylarry,
I've tried learning new note series by bouncing off other notes and I just end up playing the wrong notes every time. It may be completely different for you. I do recognize the neighboring fret by the time my finger hits the fret board, but am trying not to "focus" like that in order to learn each note series separately. If you notice in the "first try" video, you can hear me saying "C#" as I learn the fret number and look directly at the fret. After around the fifth or sixth round, I forget the fret number and just call it the tone name. I don't know if that's normal, but I seem to be absorbing the Circle at around 3 days per note series. I'm not really focusing on other lessons, but I do work on Example 29 when I get frustrated.

Thanks for the reply Russ.  One more question that has been in my mind. When you are done the circle how long do you think it would be before you could find any note called out? For instance if I was to say play the A on the D string would you be able to go right to it? I am just curious because I know that in time you would be able to do this, or maybe you would be able to as soon as you finish the circle.
