Less talking & left hand waving would be good.

    • C. Isaac says:

In my opinion, people who don’t want to hear reason and just want to play will not make it very far with the guitar; or it will take longer for you to learn.

    • dannyjones says:

did you really have to do that craig, why don’t you just try to learn something instead of being an asshole

    • Mark a Wales uk says:

Bad day Graig the advice that Griff gives out to you freely is good advice if you just want to learn licks go to YouTube if you want to know when why and how listen to what griff as to say and implement it the results will speak for themselves

    • Abe A. says:

We are here to learn how to jam with blues not to critique presentation. But, Griff does an amazing job with both teaching and presentation. Thanks Griff!

    • soulman says:

I’m wondering why if you have all this down pat why you’re here and not touring with your band somewhere? You must be some hot shot blues player right? No, well then sit down, shut up, and let the rest learn, if you won’t.

    • Tom W says:

Obviously you are not a part of this (Griff’s) community – go away.

    • Gary Davis says:

Thank you that really helped. The licks really work in any order thank you that really helped. I’ve only been following your stuff for a few months the theory is awesome I’ve got that part and I’m working on my fingers now. You said something today that really sparked me up for where I’m at.

    • jliles says:

Do it your way Griff! we followers appreciate the detail and care with with you teach.

  2. David L, UK says:

Very grateful, Griff… thanks very much for the time and effort you freely give to support all of us BGU members. Even though I have several of your packs, including BGU, your regular videos/blogs keep me motivated.

I really like the animated communication style… plenty of talking and left hand waving is fine by me.

    All the best!

  3. Rodger Lindsey says:

Thank you! Great video and lesson. Especially at the end where you slowed down and played the licks while counting slowly before speeding up. Can’t wait for the next one.

  4. William Kerr says:

I always enjoy your lessons Griff, you’ve taught me a lot. I have your Blues course and would recommend it to anyone. Thanks! William (from Scotland)

  5. Chris says:

Thanks Griff, as a beginner this is very valuable information. Looking forward to tomorrow.

  6. Jim says:

Thanks, Griff. Always good stuff. This lesson hits exactly where I have been hung up at the moment…. a breakthrough!

  7. mike says:

Didnt you break the golden rule on lick 3 by stqrting on beat 1?

  8. Dave says:

Thanks Griff, always friendly and well explained info from you….. and for free too. Hats off to you for the time and effort you put in to these regular brief lessons to try and help the non professional players progress.

    • Joey says:

I own a couple of your courses, Griff, and appreciate the free videos which are both instructional and motivational….I must say, that one of the most important factors, however, is the talking and left hand waving….Keep doing you, buddy…

  9. Dave says:

Thanks for all your info…there is always something to learn!!!!

  10. James says:

Great stuff, as I watched this video it was as if a light came on. finally a maybe I,ll get this yet, must be the teacher.

  11. Chuck Nelson Nelson says:

as a former instructor…you have an excellent presentation but you have a tendency to be too verbose…talk too long before showing us ‘the stuff.’

    • Bill45 says:

I believe Griff is tailoring his FREE lessons to reach all levels of his audience. He may focus a bit more on the “novice” side so he won’t overwhelm the newbies. The more seasoned players should accept this free advice in stride and have some empathy for the folks who are in the beginning of their own blues journey.

  12. Rod Winterhalder says:

    Excellent lesson, Griff.
    Not only instructional but motivational.

  13. Steve Taylor says:

Thanks Griff, always look forward to your emails

  14. Luis says:

Griff, thank you, all your lessons are relevant and welcome, you are a very talented guitar player and your teaching style is great

    Keep it coming

  15. DaveyJoe says:

What a great teaching method Griff. I knew you’d get us counting in there somewhere. Good job.

  16. Gregory L. Senich says:

As an instructor in many areas, as well as a life-long student, I can tell you that your explanations are crucial and necessary for solid assimilation of information. You’ve continued to show me that old dogs can certainly learn new tricks if the instructor takes the time to teach them. Thanks for all you do for us.

  17. Canada Dave says:

Hi Griff, In my case I don’t have any friends or I’m not plugged into the music scene. So I really appreciate when you just talk about all the little things….like the one on “how does this darn thing work” information which many other people pick up from being in the scene. Thanks for everything you do.

  18. Bud forlerl says:

    Thank. You. ??

  19. jim says:

Thanks for an important lesson, Griff! Gotta admit, I suck at counting out loud! (and reading the standard notation timing symbols!)
You’re emphasis on “timing” (counting) has made me realize what’s important in playing music.

  20. Colin G Campbell says:

Another excellent lesson Griff and your course got me to learn the ‘definitive’ blues lick. That being ‘Tore Down’ by Freddie King. Only 7 or 8 notes in minor pentatonic and sounds good in C or A. Totally addictive ‘lick’!

  21. Leo Gwinn says:

Leo, Excellent teaching, left hand, all a part of the excellent teacher. The right information right where and when I needed it. Not a lesson but in a great workshop setting. I am looking forward to the next part. I hope I can keep up. Thanks Griff. I can’t tell you how much I am enjoying your courses and all the lessons you send us on our emails. Thank You! The Bluz Man 77.

  22. Robert Bownes says:

Keep on doing what you’re doing, it’s working for me.

  23. mick wood says:

brian may eat your heart out

  24. Glen says:

talking IS teaching. ignore comments otherwise

  25. Glen says:

YEAH!!! Less talking and moving your hands!!! And get rid of that guitar-thingy!!!! ?

  26. Rick says:

I am fine with talking about playing. Thinking about playing guitar is essential to learning guitar. Good lesson. Wave either hand all you want.

  27. Ian Robins says:

I find myself laying awake at night thinking about riffs. Is this good for my health! 🙂 Great lesson Griff. Gesticulate all you want. I’m digging it!

  28. Bill Storey says:

    Griff,

I recently acquired the Blues Construction Kits. The examples and concepts are BRILLIANT! Well, a couple of days ago as I was working in Sample #1, it occurred to me that I should be able to play BGU Solo # 4 against the jam track. I tried it and it struck me that I struggled a bit with it even though I can play it quite well with the BGU Solo 4 jam track. The reason? There are subtle differences in the content of BGU Solo 4 and the Sample 1 from the Slow Blues Construction kit which basically meant that I was using cues from the jam track on BGU Solo 4 to come in at the right time instead of knowing in my head which beat to come in on. After a few attempts, I am now able to mix and match some of the licks from BGU Solo 4 and the licks from Sample 1. In other words, I’m applying the 4 Qualities of Blues Licks just slightly before I got this eMail. As someone said earlier, I see another course coming! In closing, I would like to offer my piece of advice to other students. “When Griff talks blues, the astute BGU student listens!”

counting in a lick has been a problem for me in the past. but this repatition and building up the pace as we go really seems to help. Thanks Griff im looking foreward to tomorrow

  31. Paul says:

    Thanks heaps Griff
This just opened a door for me
    Great stuff

  32. Jack says:

Thanks Griff. You can’t believe how much this has helped me. Thanks again

  33. Mary Ann says:

Hi Griff: I’m a student at Berklee Online though haven’t yet taken their blues guitar classes, getting through chords and scales first. But my reason for not soloing more has to do with simply not knowing all the scale patterns. Frankly to me it’s overwhelming, there seem way too many to learn to the point of knowing in order to recognize them as piece of a mode or minor key. However, what I have started doing is having the ability to better guess whether I can move a half step or Whole step so I don’t sound too far off, and then if I do hit a wrong note, simply move over to a right one with some timing and rhythm so it can work. I’m hoping to do better than this but it’s still a lot of information to take in. But of course what’s “working” does no doubt fit a scale pattern, I’m just still figuratively blind to it.

  34. BillyO says:

makes perfect sense just dreading the homework here I have to think and do sums
    Necessary evil but Ick
you’re only pointing out the truth

    thanks for the tough love

  35. Rick S says:

So after lurking here for more than a year, I finally sat in front of my computer with my guitar and actually went through the lesson. My problem was described to a “T”, I do NOT know how to learn licks correctly. Thanks for a terrific learning environment. Looking forward to the next video!!

  36. ChrisGSP says:

Hi Griff, I’ve got two observations. First we need a fifth quality – can you sing the lick? By the time you (i.e. WE) have practiced the lick enough times to be able to play it, we should be able to sing it without the guitar. If we can’t sing it, we don’t know it well enough.
Second, you should include the KEY signature in your standard notation on the PDF.

  37. BB says:

Hello Griff. With lesson ,which I learn from you ,I feel totally satisfied . Becuase your style is so good . I had guessed that your training is systematic , which you have stated in this video . In this way I am like you . This video again has motivated me to go to higher stage .
Thanks to you for all .

  38. alan says:

I have exactly this problem – I know some licks ,but still can’t string them together.I also can’t find the note that you must move to as the chords change.

  39. Mark a Wales uk says:

Cheers Griff for this important workshop and for the in depth explanation it would be good to know which notes are the roots
Looking forward to the next video
And thanks for the advice I’ve been on a two months quest to improve my technique as you suggested ?

  40. Chris says:

Great Workshop Griff. I’m just getting to the solo’s in BGU 2.0. I don’t really know a bunch of licks yet. Do you suggest students of BGU should apply these concepts as we work through the solo’s in the course or just learn the solo’s as outlined in the course and get the timing right.

  41. Michael Chappell says:

Hi Griff, Don’t change your teaching style or methods, I just like the way you teach and that is why I have purchased a lot of your courses. I am still going through BGU V 2 and doing your other Courses. I have learnt the 5 Box scales and practice them before doing a lesson each time. I am still at advanced beginner and this lesson clearly demonstrates how to memorise the licks..Excellent.

  42. Layne T Oliver says:

    Excellent lesson..
I really enjoy your teaching style, talking and using your hands and arms is part of communication…when I watch your videos it’s as if we are in the same room together…this is priceless to me and very effective!
In my experience, you need a mix of hands on and discussion to get the whole picture- you are very good at this!
    Thank you

  43. Abe A. says:

Great video. Griff you are a great guitarist and teacher. You’re the best my man!

  44. Steven Siegel says:

If any of you can break your own style and think of what he is trying to teach. It is not easy. It is truly what all of us need to do. It is mastering the art of creating music properly. I shall admit mine comes from with me and the beat of what resides inside me. It is the down fall or the making of a good guitar player. “Master the basic first” Thanks Griff

  45. Michael Gee says:

    Paging Craig Sillars, please?
Mr. Sillars, there’s a phone call for you.
It’s Eric Clapton and he needs your advice, again!

  46. Manuel M. says:

This is great counting just what I ask for, I think this going to help me speed up too. I have almost all Jam track’s and what I see is mostly pattern 1 and 2, But that’s good cause I use 1&2 all the time when soloing with the Jam’s. I recorded my self no one think’s it’s me. Great job looking forward for the next video.

  47. Pete R says:

Great job, Griff. You nailed it.
Nice guitar, by the way. Wonder where you got it? 😉

  48. Tom W says:

Too bad the 1st comment had to be a troll! What he is complaining about is the reason I have purchased a few of your programs and open your emails. Keep up the good work and rock on.

  49. Barry F says:

Griff, keep teaching. Give a fish to someone and they eat for a day. Teach someone to fish and they eat for a lifetime.

  50. Keith says:

Wow! Outstanding video. Finally the penny starts to drop for this old boy. Going to take a while to really nail this down but motivated to try!
