THE FIRST LICK, SOUNDS LIKE THE LICK IN LAYA, BY ERIC
ALREADY GOT THEM DOWNN BY EAR. IF I COUNT, I WILL SCREWUP. I SUAALY PUT ON MY DRUM MACHINE AND SET IT, FOR THE BEATS. 50+ YEARS I HAVE PAYED AND NEVER SOULD COUNT OUT LOUD. JUST FEEL THAT BEAT AND THE CHANGES IN MY GUT AND MY BODY MOVEMENTS TO THE BEAT.
GREAT STUFF GRIFF. AS ALWAYS, YOUR SO KIND WITH YOUR TIME TO GIVE US FREE INSTRUCTIONS. I HAVE A FEW OF YOUR COURSES.THANK YOU.

I’m the same way. Can’t count I just seem to know the beat.

I agree, as soon as I start counting everything goes to pot! I understand the concept but some people just can’t tap their head and rub their tummy at the same time! I’m currently wading through the strumming course and I find counting difficult so I just note “up” or “down” against the notation and and still don’t understand the “tied” notes I just wait for Griff to play through a bit then copy his strumming – without understanding why!! I’m not complaining – just pretty dumb I guess.

    Great concept

Much appreciated , thanks for this and the time you give to keeping us back on track. Alsolo ( sorry xmas spirit not worn off yet), shows the tremendous advantage of counting aloud.

Great job on the explanation. Loved the application of your logic (rules). Thank you for doing this.

And furthermore, just worked out lick number 1, which works great over a minor 2 5 in jazz as the interval of the third is not used, awesome.

  6. Noel says:

Love your time and energy. Thankyou.

  7. Karl says:

Incidentally, I do have a metronome that counts if you choose. It’s a Boss Dr. Beat. Still, counting yourself without the metronome is very important.

  8. Kimball says:

I can’t get this dang thing to play! Not from the email or from the member portal. Is anyone else having a problem? I can’t get it to play from Michael Kirby’s Facebook page either.

  9. Brian Burke says:

Griff – Great topic and right on the money in terms of importance to an intermediate player like me. At the end, you referred to the “next video.” Is it coming? You did this series a couple of years a go but can’t find it. Do you remember the dates?

Griff is One of the most outstanding and personal teachers out there..go on to the BGU forum and ask a question Griff has plenty of qualified Guitar players on the forum to answer your question. but chances are Griff will also answer your question ..He really wants you to learn…i believe the 4 qualities you need for all blues licks is a great example of Griff’s teaching …Also check out Griffs coarse Killer Blues solos made easy

Great Video! As always there are many ways to do something. He is merely suggesting that if what you are doing is not getting you laid, paid or either maybe try something different.

  12. Jumpin Jack Flash says:

    Cool licks I use alot…

  13. Jean Dominique says:

    Nice assignment.Thanks for your patience

  14. rustie says:

Deliberately and unnecessarily overcomplicated explanation of a very simple idea. How to sell a course! Griff has perfected the art of convincing many that it is very important to seek esoteric explanations for simple playing.

  15. kim says:

Does box 1 always determine the key? The first lick in the PDF is from box 2 but Griff said it is G minor. The next two licks are from box one so the key is A minor (second lick) and D minor (third lick).

If so, then what a cool takeaway – I’ve been confused with how to determine the key for boxes 2 – 5.

  16. Jack Flash says:

VERY INTERESTING Ithink this comes from ” How to Improvise ” course that I have…kinda like those licks…GREAT COURSE…

  17. John Cossano says:

in Lick #2 it shows going from the 8 fret to the 5th fret on the 2nd string! How do you do that, is it a hammer-on, or a slide? If its a hammer-on then do I have to pull off the 8 at the same instant I hit the 5? Thanks

  18. tony says:

I am afraid if i play your licks that I will sound like you . There are some things like the half step bend that`s cool .

  19. Robert Fortier says:

The approach you are taking in this video is so layered and emphasizes a bunch of concepts all neatly bundled together not the least of which is you have to put in the practice time to be able to recall the licks when you need them. But the way you present so much info so concisely is evidence of the time and thought you put in. I rarely comment like this but I felt compelled to do so in this instance

  20. ray says:

timing is king. counting aloud reaps many rewards. It becomes second nature when

    i got better at it.

  21. Kenneth Webbert says:

This is what i been looking for. Also i like to know when to mix eight notes with sixteenth notes.

  22. Bob K says:

Damn triplets!!!! Seemed to get Licks 1 and 3 but the counting of triplets always messes me up.

    Fun lesson Griff

  23. Rob S says:

    Awesome Griff thank you
