WOW Griff , not real easy for me but I will work at , thanks .

I love your videos. You’re a great musician and instructor, but the one thing I’ve always found confusing in most guitar instructional stuff is the specific verbiage used when telling folks which string and fret to finger, such as “third string, fifth fret, fifth string, ninth fret,” and so on. In a piece with lots of fretting, all those numbers get confusing or hard to remember fast (plus, I’ll bet they’re a mouthful to say)! I’ve found it a lot more helpful to me personally when the strings are referred to to by note name, and the frets by number, such as, “G-5 or A-9,” or something like that. Just my one-cent worth. Anyway, I’ve learned a lot from you. Thanks!

    • Jeffrey Borthick says:

Definitely..why avoid note names? Tell it like it is, serious students will get it and be so much better off for it. All students will step up their game if the instructor requires it.

  3. PAUL says:

happy 4th Griff. i got this lesson from you before. i forgot it. just wish I could sit in front of my pc and play my axe, but new niehgor’s bedroom is on the other side of my apartment wall and she works grave yard. plus it’s 90 degrees in my bedroom. to hot for me to go outside with my illness. guess i’ll save it and tackel it when it cools off and my nieghbor is awake. thanks. be safe and sain. God Bless America. and you and family.

This is a great lesson! What sets Griff apart and above other instructors is the way he spells out the precise timing and the beat counts. DO NOT overlook this guys, it’s well worth struggling through the precise time counts. Beginning to count time is what turned me from struggling wannabe to actually being able to play. And PAUL….. It depends how basd you want it. Where there’s a will there’s a way. I’ve spent countless hours woodshedding with an unplugged electric axe because of neighbor problems. That and playing the acoustic with shoelaces woven thru the strings to deaden them. You can also get a belt amp like the pocket rockit and use headphones. These aren’t all ideal solutions but it beats not being able to play and practice.

  4. Gary L. says:

Thanks Griff! I received this lesson before but have not gotten to it yet. I’m still working on the BGU course. The counting is going to give me problems. I can usually play it by just listening to it, But counting it throws me off. Just something I’ve got to work on. Do you really count in your head when you play at full speed?

  5. tony says:

My second drummer in my band has been asking me to play this tune for some time . I had looked at a site to get the music but its always an interpertation of what they think is how its done . wrong or incomplete as always . glad to see this one done and thanks for showing it . Oh and I wonder why you now show the e minor scale pattren . i did find the e major scale patterns on some other site . I can see the differance . seems like just small changes between the two scales . cool

  6. SteveM says:

The lesson looks great, but it appears to be cut off at 12:53 with much more to go?

  7. Gary Hylton says:

    Griff,

    YES, YES, YES!

    Thanks – Love it.

  8. Steve says:

Man that was going along really, you had me hooked Griff and then like SteveM says poof, its stops.

  9. Neil says:

Cool lesson very informative but video cuts out at 12:52? Wheres the rest dude?

  10. Jim58 says:

Great as usual but where’s the rest of it?

  11. Bob K says:

Great lesson but frustrating timing, will keep at it though. Keep email coming, reminds me to keep practicing.

  12. Reg says:

SLOW DOWN…..cant see what string/frets you are using, keep it simple for dummies like me…

  13. Kent Smith says:

    Great lesson!
It only gets cut short if you play it straight from the site. If you download it you get the whole thing. The timing thing getting me but I will keep practicing.
    Thanks Griff

  14. I really appreciate the email videos, and coaching.
The only problem is while trying to keep up with the free stuff I don’t have time to work on the stuff I have paid for. I am not complaining just reporting.
    Mahalo,

  15. LouisVA says:

This syncopated stuff is not my forte! I don’t know whether I’m coming or going.

  16. DaveyJoe says:

Very cool Griff. I tried to figure that one out myself a few years back but you laid it out clean! Good job and thank you!

  17. Chip creech says:

    Thanks griff
You play many guitars in your videos, I think I need a gibson or a starat, to help me in this blues learning. Gibson has several I am considering, I think the 335, 336 and the 339. Would you have a best bet of these or maybe an American strat. I have ms and will never be real accomplished, but I have your 5 easy blues and enjoy trying and learning. Thanks. Chip.

    • Rod Woolley says:

The Epiphone 335 is a good guitar especially for blues. With its humbucker pu’s it has a great tone: quite distinct and different from a Strat, but is a bit heavy and cumbersome for regular use. Sounds like you might do better with a Strat.

  18. Bill Storey says:

Mine cut off at 12:53 as well. Hope there is a rerun!

  19. This lesson was great. I play acoustic and this lesson plays very well on an acoustic and obviously on electric for which it was written. I hope to see more like this one.

I wonder. Seeing some of the comments about lesson difficulties. Would it be practicle to do two lessons. One for beginner and one for intermediate> This might be a lot of work but might be good for all. Just a thought. Thanks Griff for the video. It was great.

  20. Ted says:

The pdf for this seems to show 1/8 notes for the strums, not 1/16th as stated in the video. Am I misreading it?

Hi Griff, you sent lesson for Mary Had A Little Lamb. I can count the 1e@a but I can’t see when the note is played up or down. Could you show bar 2@3 with the count under and the strum under the count. Thanks Terry

  32. […] Mary Had A Little Lamb – SRV (not a straight blues, but close. This isn’t covered in Blues Guitar Unleashed but I did a thing on it on Youtube.) […]

Thanks for this one too. You are a great teacher God bless you

  38. Chuck P says:

    Griff
Great tune and my all time fav guitar player. Did SRV actually tune down a half step for this one even though he played it in the open position? I know when you talked about him adding some extra effects etc which also changes the sound and he used big load equipment and do on and all of these things reflect the actual sound so I was just curious….

  39. Henry Crampton says:

Hi Griff. Really enjoyed the ‘Mary Had A Little Lamb’ tutorial, challenging yes – but a great tune to cut your teeth on. As a retired teacher I continue to be impressed with all your tutorials and teaching methods. I am that enthused with your lessons that I have just ordered ‘Playing On The Porch’ DVD. Thank you for all the excellent tutorials so far.

  47. Jim O' says:

That’s cool and I’m picking it up. Gotta get warmed up to start the course material. thanks

  48. Rox says:

Great lesson, Griff. I have many of your courses.
These emails contain stuff in the courses. The emails inspire me to practice more as I am making progress!

  49. John Martino says:

Is a printout of this lesson available?

  50. Dan Miller says:

Another great lesson Griff. I’ve tried to get this on my own but failed. Probably the rythum threw me off. Your lesson on how to count it is what I was missing. I’ve got to get busy and work on it. It seems like a simple easy riff to learn but sure isn’t. Thanks for covering it
