It would be nice to do a Buddy Guy Version as Stevie is playing a tribute to Buddy in this. Buddy is where it came from and I think the originator.

This is true. Got to see him at House of Blues in Orlando in 2005 and he signed a polka dotted guitar strap which I still use today.

    • Mel says:

This song which i never heard, was strikingly bluesy. So i learned the song as you have it. Thank you, i dont usually get through some things, because its hard . This was very helpful lesson and introduce d me to the blues scale and some licks that are put together in a song. Nice job teaching

The late great SRV had style and tech. like no one else. T.Y. for the lesson .

  3. Jim P. says:

Thanks Griff. You make a big point of not starting on the 1 downbeat. Can you explain a little further the importance of this. Maybe an example of doing it and not doing it to demonstrate the difference in sound, or whatever it is. I know you have discussed this point in some other lessons; but I still don’t understand the importance of this point. Thanks. Happy Thanksgiving.

Lessons aside, it is apparent that you are a very talented player. No doubt many would find it interesting knowing your musical background, or more specifically “who taught the teacher”

  5. Stan says:

Love Stevie’s riffs on this song.

  6. Stan says:

Love Stevie’s little riffs on this song.

  7. DaveyJoe says:

    Thanks again, Griff!

  8. JIM KUBITZA says:

Playing it is one thing. Singing it while playing it is another. 🙂

    • Scott Snellgrove says:

Most of the singing happens on the chords between the licks so its actually not too bad . And we all know the words already ; )

  9. Stephen C. says:

I sure wish you had the time/counting printed above the notes in the tab!

  10. Abe says:

Thanks Griff must give this one a try

  11. Joel Howard says:

    This is GREAT! Thanks!

  12. Jeanna says:

    Cool lesson, I love SRV

Hi Griff, this is a comment that applies to all your tab lessons. It would be very helpful for you to put the YT link to the video on the tab sheet. I don’t have enough storage space to download all your videos, so I have to go find them on YT, which can be time-consuming. And a couple of times I wasn’t able to find the video. A link would be very helpful – take us to the video in an eyeblink.

  14. Michael Freyta says:

I agree with Johnny b about tabs. They would be helpful in this tune… any thoughts about printing those?

  15. GTF says:

I agree with Jim P’s earlier comment… can you give a lesson and demo why not to start on beat one. You always stress this, but I almost always find my self wanting to start there. I’ve asked other guitar teachers about this and they say that is not a thing. I trust your lessons more, but want to better understand. I completely get it when playing a chord – riff type thing where I play the chord on beat one and then the riff, but what about if another guitar is playing the chord… or did I just answer my question?

Thanks for all the great content and lessons!

    • Jacob says:

in order to play tab properly, you need to be able to uderstand regular music notation. To be able to stsrt on one on the next bar Its whatyou have to do. If you dont know already take the time to learn it. youll be better for it.

  16. Russell Rohling says:

Would love to have some more Buddy Guy in the courses , acoustic or electric.

  17. Steven R. Krauszer says:

Think I missed something on Mary Had a Little Lamb Style.
What is X on the 1st and second string in the second bar.

    • Steve Garner says:

Those are called scratches or dead notes or ghost notes. Lift your fingers off the string just enough so that the strum does not sound like the note, but sounds more like a scratch of the note. Lift off too far and you will either get a bad squeal or the open string note.

  18. Billy bad says:

    Your awsome guitar player..

  19. Alexander says:

Thanks Griff, I saw this lesson before but I didn’t get a chance to look at it . I’m glad I finally have time to look at the lesson and I think that this song is fun to play.
    Right On Griff!

  21. Charles Hazen says:

    Thank You Griff,
I’ve always liked the way you take time in each lesson, the care to explain all. Thank You chuck H

  22. Gordon Day says:

Ok,I have been doing this one a flat top, but this has made me brake out my old Strat!

  23. Gordon Day says:

I started with Lonnie Mac, he gave me my first guitar in 1968. I also still have it, but if I touched it ,it would crumble!

  24. TSGordon says:

Mega cool. Is this a one-off, or does it come with the “Unleashed” package?

  25. Daniel Smith says:

Another killer lesson with note by note suggestions and close ups of the fingering….FANTASTIC

    Thanks Griff!

  26. Wick Beavers says:

It’s amazing how much music there is in just a few strings. Thanks!

  27. Joe Accardo says:

I’ve seen this lesson before and I always pick up a few pointers. Great job Griff keep them coming.

  28. David says:

This is the kind of lesson that I really like To split the screen and show us the picking as well as the notes on the fretboard. . Aside from that, this is one of my favorite songs that SRV played. GREAT LESSON !
    Thanks Griff.

  29. Jacob says:

Saw Stevie back in 80 or so with about a couple hundred others. He played with such intensity you’d think he was playing a stadium full. He’s been my favorite since. THis song has been one of my favorites as well. I tried to learn this song years ago and could’nt. I thout it was to hard and would never be able to play the guitar well and had alot to do with me giving up for alot of years, but after seeing this you’ve given me a new understanding of it Iv’e sarted to play again. Although dificult Im starting to be able to play it. Many Thank’s
