You sound pretty good singing Griff I like it, my wife thinks I need to sing along as I play, I’m going to start. Thanks.

  2. Hi Griff, thanks for the lesson. How do I get your ‘Blues song book’ you were using in the lesson?

  3. TonyS says:

Very useful video indeed. Thanks Griff. You always inspire.

  4. Arnold Martinson says:

Thanks Griff. Definitely the type of lesson that helps me see how it all pulls together. I’ve focused my learning of BGU on learning the lesson, but as you say, not seeing how to apply it. Hadn’t thought of this somewhat reversed approach of the melody first. And this “off the cuff” approach is great, more what I’m faced with.

  5. John says:

Hi Griff, this was a good lesson, think you gave me a different approach to my BGU lessons and to Nick the “Blues Song Book” you are seeing in the lesson is part of the BGU package, it is a very good course to have in your library of skills

  6. Griff – you did it again! You brought all the fragments together & showed us that lessons from BGU actually do work in terms of ‘making a song’ – & that if we study BGU (if people don’t have a copy, why not – it’s so comprehensive & gives you everything you need to play the blues) & take our time, it does work. Simply the best blues tutor on the planet. Thanks Griff.

  7. tony says:

informal and educational you gave me some new ideas . I have the lessons . I really liked the video about the g7 cords .

  8. artyman says:

This was my first BGU event, I was nervous as a newbie, but had a great time. Griff is great, I encourage you to attend a BGU event. Check out the forum for more advice and info

  9. Jeff says:

Griff this like your Blues mash up video is so eye opening. I paused this half way through and tried playing to the backing track from your Ultimate Jams 1 that is like Sweet Home Chicago and I be dog gone it didn’t sound too terrible and it was fun.

  10. Randy says:

Informal is good on you Griff. Try it more often. Thanks for the great beginner confidence building tips.

  11. Chris says:

I really liked this Griff; my problem is I’m not good enuf to sing and play at the same time yet.-)

  12. John says:

Thank you Griff this made so much sense!!! The light came on

  13. Rolly says:

As a singer I can directly relate to what Griff is saying here. I still can’t count out loud but if I sing then I don’t have any problem keeping time. This video has got me back into my BGU course.

  14. Kathryn Falvai says:

Loved the singing. And yes I’m going to go practice with intriguing goals. Now where did I put that book ? 😳Just kidding. 😄Right near the guitar.

  15. John Allison says:

Thanks Griff! As a sax player I can often apply your advice to reeds! But check this out by Jeff Schneider. 4 note solos? – great minds think alike!

Yes, yes, yes, Griff you’re the best! Words can’t do your playing and teaching skills justice. It felt like you were across the room.

As always, thank you for helping those of us who play guitar – play better!

Great lesson, tips and encouragement from you again. Thanks for sharing.

  19. Chris says:

Thanks Griff. What a great infomercial for what I consider your premier course, Blues Guitar Unleashed. I have really learned a lot from the course and now you’ve shown me another way to apply it.

  20. Roscoe says:

    Griff,
Love your lessons. How about a lesson sometime on singing the blues. For us beginners that are just getting started on beginning blues guitar still trying get the feel on singing while playing.

  21. JimE Taylor says:

Great “informal” video lesson. Tremendous help.

  22. Warwick says:

Do you carry the book with you when you travel?

Griff – Really eye-opening … I am have fun working through BGU but sometimes feel that I lose the forest for the trees … this was a valuable reset. Would really appreciate your throwing a few of these opportunities to connect the dots between the lessons and the bigger picture. Many thanks!

I love the “plug n’ play concept and have been using it in my playing. Makes me sound like a pro. Thanks Griff!

That was great…I have a few of your courses with bits and peices from each on Griffs wall of knowlege…THE MORE TOOLS YOU HAVE IN YOUR TREASURE CHEST THE MORE PRODUCTIVE YOU WILL BE……

  29. Mark Dickenson says:

    Loved this lesson,very informative

  30. Kenneth says:

thank you Griff, seems too simple to be good..But it works…

  31. jean says:

Definitely a better way to go back to the basics and practice singing. Of course not all songs are blues ,which lead me to the following question: what if I want to sing any other song that is not a blue song? Please shed some light …thank you so much…

  32. Gary says:

    Het Griff,

A couple of days ago I was thinking “how do you put all of this stuff together to create a song”. And bingo, here it is. I like how you demystify the whole process, whether it’s putting a solo together or a whole song, and help us realize it’s not a deep dark secret but a straightforward process. Thanks for being so good at what you do.

  33. Kevpie says:

I just started BGU and on course 2 when I received this email. I was excited to hear you put the courses together and can’t wait to get further along in the book. It took a while to convince myself to purchase the course but now consider it very worthwhile. Thanks Griff.

  34. Royce O Stephenson says:

You make this stuff look easy! I know It will come in time as I learn to relax and just enjoy playing. I appreciate the encouragement. Thanks Griff

  35. Terry says:

Let’s a great lesson. We get all this stuff and nice to put it to some good use. Thks.

  36. Dave, Paso Robles, CA says:

Wow, thanks so much for this one. I’ve enjoyed many of your videos and heard you say something to the effect blues is “pick, place, and play” many times, but this really cements that construct. Will get back into BGU2 and work on it.

  37. Ken Reid says:

Very good lesson, I can manage the chords and most of the scales but I could never put them together. The biggest part for me was the rhythms that you used, I need to work on mine but thanks for the demo of different speeds and spaces.

  38. Mark a Wales uk says:

    Cheers Griff
For the advice as always eye opening shame I missed the UK event the BGU course helped me a lot on understanding the blues well worth the cash

  39. Dennis Wacker says:

Griff. You don’t have any idea how much this helps me. I have had my lesson books almost 3 years and sometimes get stuck. I am going to grab my book get it on. Thanks

  40. Will says:

I prefer the original lyric: “back to the land of California, sweet home Chicago.” I figure Don’t forget us here in sunny California!

Awesome lesson. You are my blues guitar teacher. Your maj/min left/right facing approach is brilliant and the only way I know to think on the guitar.

I am currently working on the Slow Blues Supplement to reinforce these concepts.

    Thank you,

    Will J

  41. Blackbelt says:

Spontaneous unstruction at it’s best Griff! Thanks.

  42. Broder Jeffrey MD says:

Trying to decide what level course to purchase. I have been playing for a few months. Got open cords. Can bar f and bm. Still homing my skills. Was afraid that the beginner blurs may be too easy. Which do you think I should order?

    • Jeff says:

The beginner’s is not too easy. I’ve been playing for years and I learned plenty out the beginner’s course.

  43. Jeff says:

I did my own song using Griff’s lessons and jam track (for solo 1 from BGU 2.0)

I established a “sonic hook” right from the get go using a “tore down” type of line. I made my own version of it.

I played Griff’s rhythm ideas during the vocal verses. I played the 12 bar blues in E rhythm during the solo verses.

And the lead is solo 1 from Griff’s BGU 2.0.

This whole song was just an exercise for me to learn the 1st solo.

If you want to take a listen, it’s the 2nd song on the list on my soundcloud entitled, “Red, White, & Blue”

  44. Scott R says:

Such a great session Griff. Loved the casual format, and content.

And I can’t believe you’d had this for 3 years and are only publishing this now!!

Jokes aside, please do more of this, and as a bonus, maybe incorporate a looper to hold the bass notes or the rhythm while soloing.

  45. Cannot even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this video. Been out awhile but just now got to view it

  46. Dave D says:

Griff, what page are you looking at to do the lick for the shuffle? I have book 2.0, but don’t see the lick starting on the c? Where am I lost?

  47. Jim P. says:

    Griff
Not sure if you really read these comments. Great lesson. Like in this video, I wish you would modify all your courses to always include real life song examples to use what we learn. That way we can relate your lessons to the”real world” and build up a list of songs to play for a total accomplished feeling. Thanks again.

  48. Jim says:

Great lesson. This was exactly what I needed.

  49. Jim says:

Great Lesson. This is exactly what I needed,

  50. alexander aliganga says:

interesting stuff Griff, I got to check this out and try it for myself. You said a lot of ideas that really click for me. I really never thought of doing those things you mentioned in this
lesson. Can’t wait to try this out after work. Thanks Again,
    Alexander
