That would be absolutely fantastic Griff would be completely thrilled about that as others would too I'm sure.
I have seen the ceramic slides & tone bars you mentioned ,

Hi Sunny

Weird you posted this because I was talking to Bob about slides today.
He has a 'Blues bottle', a pyrex slide moulded to look like a beer bottle neck.
As the others said, you have to retune the guitar. There's something called drop D tuning, I think.
No substitute for barre chords but it sounds really cool
Good for playing around with. :)

Was going to ask if anyone else plays with a slide.

Mandy

Drop D tuning, drop your e string from an e to d, double D drop tuning, drop both d's to e--Janis Joplin "Turtle Blues" is in double drop D.  Neil Young uses this tuning a lot--he like's D  and dm.

And as everyone else said, slide guitar is a whole new animal.  A lot of players, like J. Page, use the slide on their ring finger so they can use the other 3 fingers but I noticed that Bonnie R uses her middle finger.  Sounds cool but doesn't replace barre chords.  Bite the bullet and practice.

Lucky Larry...I've never seen anyone use the index finger for slide...I can't figure out just how that would work ..like the guys said , you wouldn't be able to do  :D even a partial chord nor mute which is a must.
I use my pinkie  and only slide a limited amount for effect .

Wouldn't it be great if Griff put out something on slide for us ?

Here are a couple of examples of slide using other than the pinky.

So I think the styles, the type of slides, the tuning etc. is a matter of choice or chance. :)

Larry , i think i might know what you meant by using the forefinger/index.Did you mean the lap slide guitarists ?
If you did the the same principle applies as the lap slider will have his 2nd,3rd & 4th finger behind the slide (to mute unwanted strings) just as the " normal " position will have your 1st,2nd, 3rd behind it - depending on which finger you put the slide on.
Am i right there Larry ?

in case you missed this up a little ways in this topic:

Generally I stick with the pinky for the slide for the same reasons LP mentioned. You'll need to do a lot of muting while playing slide.

I actually use a ceramic slide... don't know where I got it or how to replace it so I hope I don't lose it.

I want to do some slide stuff for you all, I've been listening to Sonny Landreth a lot lately. If you look him up on youtube, I think he's one of the all time greats at slide playing. Very musical.

LP, you are right. When I am typing I know what I mean but it doesn't always come out to others what I mean.

LP, I like this site from what I see. I have it in my favorites. I still have a lot to learn before I go to slide guitar but I will go there. I know Griff is a proponent of learning every style that you can. :)

..Just wanted to re-post what Griff posted about the slide...in case you missed it.
