How do I add an avatar to this so I can become an actual "person" to everyone?

Hi Stephanie,
In the upper right of your screen, you'll see your name. Hover over that with your cursor and you will see a double list of options, one of which is Personal Details. Click on Personal Details and you will get a refreshed browser window. The second option is Avatar: If you click on the silhouette image, you will be prompted for an image file. Upload an image and make sure it is to your satisfaction and click Submit.

Only thing I'd add is that I'm pretty sure there is file size limit (500K?), if it doesn't seem to be working try making the image file smaller. I use one of the AVS Image manipulators to do that, but I'm sure there are loads of tools out there that you can use.
