Long TIme Player

My name in Ernie, and I'm a retired teacher living in Granbury Texas. I started playing when I was about 19 in Boulder Colorado. I learned from a friend and my brother, who had already played in bands. My friend was gifted, having played trombone in his HS jazz band, plus his mother taught piano.

My brother was more a feel player, but also taught me a lot. He played semi professionally for years around Colorado, which had a big music scene due to the club scend for 18 year olds that could drink 3.2 beer legally. He recored an album (on cassette, which he later digitilized on a CD) called The BLT Boys. It was all original songs, he sang on most of them and played some really nice guitar. He fell into bad health in his later years, but managed to record some things on his own computer setup.

Funny story about my son Dean. I was living in Killeen Texas and at 16, he came to spend the summer with me. I taught him to play bass. He later played live on the radio, because I knew Jack, the DJ.

Later, Dean spent a summer in Clarksdale, Mississippi on a canoe/rafting outfit, but got into Delta Blues. Clarksdale is famous for it's blues history. He now lives in New Orleans where he is active in the music scene there.

We have two great live music venues in Granbury. Granbury Live and the historic Granbury Opera House. I've seen some great tribute bands there. Chicago, Creedence, ZZ Top to name a few. I've been trying to get Griff to come down and play a gig, since he's living in Texas now and not that far away.

Welcome,

:giggle:Actually, i really had no talent, and gave up trying to do anything other than play for fun. I quit playing gor years and sold all my equipment. When I starting my teaching career, kids were bringing guitars and wanted to learn, so I got back into it. I did teach several kids to play during my teaching career (German and Math, not music).

Welcome Ernie.

Granbury, TX is really close to my son. Great lake there, so he says.... I personally have never been there.

Sounds like you have a solid music background. We anticipate some activity down in the cellar, known as Virtual Jam Room. Also, another area you will find interesting is Other Member Recording. All can be found by scrolling down to the last section of the Home Page to Recording Info And Member Recordings.

First please read the info in this link:

Hope you have much success with Griffs courses. He is a very good teacher....

It makes me happpy to play The Blues!
Welcome! You mentioned several places that I am very familiar with. I have spent a good deal of time in Boulder (as well as Denver and Colorado Springs), New Orleans, Mississippi, and Texas. Over the years I had several groups and also played solo.

Have fun set realistic goals and ask questions. Also be careful of these guys! Many of them attempt to own one of each guitar ever made and every pedal and amplifier as well.:love:

Hi and welcome from one of the UK mob, great bunch of folk on here with plenty of advice and encouragement. You might also like to take a wander down to the basement and join some of us in the Virtual Jam Room, you have to bring your own beer though :) I'm out of action at the moment having had a fall and broken my hand.

Hi Ernie, Welcome to the forum.
Griff has a pretty big fan base here in the McKinney area, but probably not that many in Granbury, so it might be hard for him to fill venues there. If the venues are always full regardless of who's playing, then it might work out. I'd hate to see an empty house because he's not a tribute band or they don't know his name. (I'm sure the venue wouldn't like it much either.)
Once people in the area hear him, they won't forget him though.

I thought of that, but have been surprised when seeing the tribute bands, how great the audiences were. I don't think of Granbury as a place that I'm going to find Creedence, Journey, Eagles, Heart fans, but that's been the case. If the venue puts up a link (or people look it up themselves) they will know what to expect. The venues do post info about the bands they pick. As you said, if he builds up a fan base here, he will have a lifetime gig.
Just had a thougt, we've seen bands playing for free at some of the events On The Square. That would be another way to get attention. If he has a blues band, something less than the full band, he might want to start with that.

I understand. You'd really have to talk to Griff about that (actually Laura). I was just trying to set expectations.
