The closer you get the headstock of your guitar to your own head, the easier it will be. The main problem when you play with a strap is that you'll have a tendency to wear the guitar a lot lower, and that makes it awkward. At least at first, shorten up the strap and get the guitar up really high, as if you were sitting or even higher. That takes the responsibility of holding the guitar away from your hands and lets the strap do the work.
