Oh man, I could watch that clip over and over. The problem with that video is that as soon as I watch I spend the next hour watching all the ones on the side. Thanks for posting.

and here's a version I love. I wish there was one of him doing it with a 6 string though.

He makes it look so easy.  As EC said, He was an open channel for the blues... it just flowed through him.

imagine doing all those barres and remembering the lyrics at the same time, plus keeping it all in time. blows my mind. sad that he's gone, gone too soon.

I don't know how many times I've watched Stevie play that on various vids I have. It's amazin' each and every time.

Thats the show he did that they boo'd him through the whole show, he played harder each song, wasn't long getting off stage either when he was done. He went on to win the grammys, a couple years later they got him back and they thought he was the greatest. How anyone can stand there and watch that and boo is beyond me. If you can't see talent there, you better get a hobby.

Seriously!

I consider myself fortunate to have seen him perform as the opening act for the Moody Blues in 1983.  Blew me away!

Can't wait to hear it Wayne!

SRV and Pride and Joy is what brought me back to the guitar.

I think Montreux was more of a Jazzy, R&B type venue and people weren't prepared for SRV.  I remember the first  time I watched the DVD and going what the heck, are they booing him? I couldn't believe it!  Then I watched the bonus material where they talked about it, and then how they went back in 1985 and brought down the house! If you're an SRV fan, check it out. Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble Live at Montreux

Sorry Wayne, didn't mean to hijack your thread here...

Pride and Joy was also my reason for starting BGU.  It is still work in progress ::)

I wish you well with it Wayne and everybody giving it a go.

Dude

You would not believe some of the blues faces I have been pulling trying to get this technique under my fingers. The only thing I have managed to develop so far is a frown line I could park my motor bike in :-/

If you have never done this before and can get it down (properly) after only two days practice you seriously deserve a gold medal in my book

It's hard - until you get the feel, then it becomes easier.  And it absolutely sounds like crap before you get it.

IGNORE that it sound bad!   Just keep practicing.  Griff is right - it's in the speed, but you won't get the speed until you have that bass line down.

Think of this more as a Bass line - but you happen to have some high hat to accent it (the high strings)

The bass notes have to be held for the full note value then the little hi hit, and into the next bass note

daaah-dat  daaah-dat daaah-dat daaah-dat

otherwise it doesn't swing

notice that Griff on his recording even gets a little vibrato going on the bass notes
