Free Tempo Recording

In a recent monthly challange, @Elwood did a great job on a recording using the "free tempo recording" in Logic pro.

The ability to have a drummer follow you really captured my attention

As a Windows/Studio One user, I wanted to see if I could do that in S1.

I know I can use the "Tempo Track" to follow a track..........that's just one part of the process.

My conundrum is this:
Without having to build my own drum track, is there a plugin that I can drop in that will create a drum track on it's own by just following the Tempo Track?

I have never sought anything like that out. I guess I know what I'll be doing tonight.

Yeah, that caught my attention as well. I don't know of any other software that will do that. I've got EXDrummer and it won't.
I'm a Windows user too, but I bought a used iPad last year to run another iOS-only software, so I might give the free trial of Logic Pro a try.

I have Band-in-a-box.
That can create tracks with user input.
I’d love to find something that works like the DigiTech Trio that builds its own tracks based upon what you play , rather than playing back what you programmed

Same idea occurred to me after seeing how well it tracked with Elwood. I'm certain I've seen a way in which it can be done in S1 using only their standard plug-ins. I'm off searching for the video.

Thanks for that Moto!

Actually a few months ago I got wind of "beat mapping" in LP and watched a few videos on that. It never jelled in my mind. Then I came across "free tempo recording". I watched that video I posted way too many times and then just jumped in.

On 6 days I had 2 channels of ToneDeq /Mini, my Sennheiser E-845S mic (with the Cloudlifter) for singing, and the AKG p-420 aimed at the mini but picking up everything in the room. 4 channels running recording. I used the "free tempo recording" button to record and after a quick prompt I had a tempo map on the screen showing just how imperfect my performance was, what I was expecting. I literal just grabbed a house drummer and put him on an empty track and set the "follow" button on the drummer panel to follow one of the mini tracks, and it worked!!!

I'm sure way better results can be had with some tweaking -but- I am just over the moon nuts about being free of the curse of having to grind through making up a drum track (that still sounds choppy) and then play everything in time with ol robot nuts there. My usual result was somewhat akin to a steel garbage can rolling down a hill with a few rocks in it.

Encouraged by how 6 days came out I will go b ack and see if the "beat mapping" makes more sense to me now.

That free tempo recording may have just really changed how I work and how much I enjoy the working part!

I am curious to see what the great minds here can come up with for S1.

That new "Master Assistant" is also an outstanding feature, also stupid easy to use! That comes in real handy with me. :)

Cheers! :Beer::Beer::Beer:

This is apparently not as simple as Elwood's LP method, but it's what i saw and never attempted. It could be valuable to know. For me, the only programmed midi I use are drums and I almost always play to a click. But, this could be handy, if I recorded a acoustic and vocal track free timed, and later wanted to add more instrumentation.

Yep,
Got all that and I’ve used it for a few things but, as I’ve said, that’s only one part of the equation .
I think the real magic is that drummer plugin that @Elwood described in LogicPro.
You’d think with all the AI going on there would be something like that in S1

Good idea Mike,
I’ve also got an iPad but, geez I’m trying to simplify things and I really don’t want introduce the complexity of adding a second DAW to my life.
I’ve been through several learning curves and I don’t want to go back to the drawing board

You have a bunch of them, but they hang out on your iPad. Not much use to you there, unless you graduate to GarageBand. (ow ow ow, don't hit me, I was just funnin)

That S1 tempo mapping video looks similar to some that I gave up on with LP.

I think the "magic" is that "free tempo recording" button. I have never been a fan of click tracks, my tag line for the forum used to be something like "click tracks - humans playing for computers". I love to practice with the metronome, I hate playing with one. I may have finally found my freedom, especially for recording the acoustic the way I play it. Yes!!!

I hope you guys find something similar for S1. Maybe if a few of you make noise to them they will have a "great idea"!!!

Hey @CaptainMoto , I have a couple of tunes I will record (hopefully soon) that should be a little tricker for the ol AI drummer. Less straight ahead rock and more nuanced. Also, maybe a bit more difficult for me which could translate into more "free tempo" on the loose. I think that will be interesting.
This is the beat map that came up with ol Dave Duddley's hit, redux. I will not get any awards for "clock of the year".

I have not done that because it leads to a subscription based experience, I like to pay once. If you try it please let us know how you like it.
Yeah, I don't care for subscription software either, which appears to be the only way it's offered for iOS. As it turns out, my iPad isn't capable of running it anyway as it requires a newer iOS version than my iPad can handle.

EZDrummer has somthing called BandMate.
I've tried that. I'm interested to see how you do with it since I am a putz with that stuff. I believe that with bandmate you record something and then drag that into bandmate and it will suggest drum solutions. Then you can go build your drum track. I could be all wrong, just going on memory from a while ago. I do recall that it was with the EZ3 update.
