Counting Demos

It took me quite awhile to work out these patterns. But I thought I'd share what helped me with those who may be struggling. Below is what my printout of pages 25 & 26 looked like when I was done. I marked each measure in blue, the end of each "pattern" in orange and the transition from ascending to descending in green. This will help see where somethings line up and others don't. The links are to 3 videos I made showing how I play the various patterns and further explain what I did. They should be played in the order listed. Enjoy.

Addendum: I have to admit that until I did this course I'd never counted anything in my life
(except in 1964 when I first tried Mel Bay Volume 1.) I finished this course about a year ago, but just recently decided I could explain things better with a simple video. And, dare I say, I haven't counted anything since I finished the course. But I really enjoyed working this out.

The demos are what I attempted to explain in my response to the thread "Examle 26 I'm not hearing sequence of 4 triplets" so it's also there in written form. The videos are way easier to understand, I hope.

Errata:

In video #2 at about 42 seconds I say 12 beats per measure, but meant 12 notes per measure.
In video #3 there is a pause at 6:45 for no apparent reason. That was just a senior moment.

Also notice I'm not using a metronome, so when I play the various patterns I'm not really increasing any speed. That's for a reason.
You first need to learn the pattern and the counting at you own pace. At this point the metronome is your "enemy". You use the metronome later, once you have the pattern in your brain and fingers, as an aid in maintaining your tempo. You are in control, not the metronome.

Also notice at 17:45 near the end of Video #3 when I play the 3 note patterns in 8ths, triplets and then 16ths, they all sound exactly the same to you even though I am counting each one differently to myself. That was my earlier point about just listening to me play but counting to your self. Just listening they all sound the same, but when you count them differently you will hear them differently.

Griff also covers triplets in BGU Lesson 21, "The Swing Of The Blues".

In "Acoustic Blues Guitar Unleashed" he devotes 2 lessons (4&5) to timing. Thats one complete DVD!
This is the most extensive discussion of timing I've seen in any of his courses that I own.

Peace
