This is a wonderful tool. First saw it a couple years ago and I didn't appreciate it. It was too overwhelming for me so I blew it off. (*NOTE* if something is overwhelming, that might just be a sign that is a weak area).

Sooo, to make it more usable for me I set it to MINOR (not Major or Random). The reason I did this was to effectively cut out those parts of the exercise that I don't understand...YET. AND I set it RIGHT HANDED (not Left Handed or Random). The reason I did this was to cut the exercise in half yet again. (I cut it in half by first removing the Major. Then cut it in half again by removing the Left Hand). I just did Right Handed because that's how I started learning my boxes. Box 1 on the 6th string (or 1st string) would be a Right Handed pattern. These settings reminded me of just starting out learning the blues scale in its most simple form. Keep it simple.

So by setting those options I was only working with Minor, Right Handed scales. Those setting made it so I could concentrate on learning first things first. The things I was most familiar with. To my surprise I found out that I pretty much didn't know anything except Box 1. But after only 15 minutes or 1/2 an hour I was able to answer the questions with remarkable accuracy and pretty good speed. After a couple of days I was comfortable with the Right Hand side of things. So then I set it to Left Hand only. And I'm getting pretty good at that. Now I have it set to Random (NOT just left hand or right hand, but both).

The thing that slows me down the most these days is that I don't know the name of every note up and down and across the fretboard. A lot of times I have to find the target note by finding another note. If I'm looking for E on the 3rd string I might find it by going to E at the 12th fret on the first string and I know from there if I go over 2 strings and down 3 frets I'll be at an E. That is the 3rd string 9th fret. E.

I NOTICED AN ERROR ON THE TRAINER TOOL. If the tool is set to A#/Bb, 2nd string, Right Hand, and Minor the answer under "HINT" is off by one fret. It shows the root at A (10th fret, 2nd string) instead of A# (11th fret 2nd string). Of course the whole pattern is one fret flat. So that's a glitch in the flash cards.

After working exclusively on the MINOR side of things I will gravitate to the MAJOR and work with it to the exclusion of the MINOR until I get comfortable with the MAJOR side of things.

WHAT DOES THIS TOOL DO?

A few things. I've been going back over some of Griff's videos and when he's talking about the different boxes, and keys, and positions on the neck, etc., I'm able to understand what he's talking about a lot more. It's easier to follow the conversation. And to my surprise Griff might say something about using Box 3 in A min and I know instantly how to find it. And I can follow along.

And I'm beginning to be able to "see" the fretboard clearer after using this tool for less than 60 minutes. It's AMAZING. It's good to do the exercises with a guitar in your hand. But you don't need to have a guitar to do these flash cards. TIP OF THE DAY. If you have access to the internet at work, when you have a few extra minutes, in stead of watching porn, check out this tool for 5 or 10 minutes a day and see if it doesn't open up your eyes in a week. And the porn will still be there when you're finished with the trainer.

Highly recommend this FREE tool.

I have a problem with dyslexia. I keep making the same mistake thinking that the 5th string is the 2nd string and the 4th string is the 3rd string...and I know better. I don't get tripped up when it says "5th String"... I know I'm on the A string. But when it says "2nd string" I go to the A string instead of the B string. When it says "4th String" I know I'm on the D string but when it says it says "3rd string" I want to be on the D string instead of the G string. I don't know if I would make that mistake while holding the guitar, but I'm just looking at the computer screen working the problem in my head. I'm going to keep working it until I overcome the dyslexic miscalculations.

Thanks for the post. I looked at this s few months ago but did not pursue because I'm wrapped up in BGU2.0 lesson 11 and now getting my head around lesson 12.
I'm glad you are getting a lot out of it, you've inspired me to take five minutes a day to learn it too.
Maybe you should grab your guitar instead of just doing it on a computer.

It's a great tool. If you ever dabble in level 3 soloing it's cool to realize the root for the next chord is always close by, so you can do it all in the same area of the fretboard. Then jump up or down the fretboard and do it again. It's a work in progress but it's coming along. (y)

I keep trying to make myself stick to a routine when starting to play - TUNE the bloody guitar !!! Then two or three Deals in the Blues Scale Training Tool. Then start working on whatever I'm doing today.

I have finally gotten around to using the FlashCards and was having a difficult time remembering what scale was right or left on which string (64-year-old brain). Then I wrote it out on a piece of paper and had an ah-ha moment. After practicing it after my discovery I was spot on and it's easy to remember. Here it is for Minor Pentatonic/Blues Scale Only:

Start on string #1 down to string #6, working left box to the right box and the root note falls on that particular string, the box #'s are as follows;

String #1 5 - 1
String #2 2 - 3
String #3 4 - 5
String #4 1 - 2
String #5 3 - 4
String #6 5 - 1
