BGU Lesson 4-1

Peter Wynne

Woke up fell outta bed drag a comb across my head
Lesson 4 was a struggle for me. Its only two strings but having to pluck 2 strings only took me a lot of practice. Especially when i started to record it over and over and over ........

Anyway i thought it was interesting that Griff taught the little chords in lesson 4 but the play alongs were all top 4 strings. So for completeness have i have included all 3 versions - picked, plucked and strummed. I am not aiming for perfection at this point but once i have the chords under my fingers and i can feel the rhythm i press on.

I used my Duesenberg Starplayer, Yamaha THR10C, and Cubase 8 to record these tracks.

On to lesson 5 (i suspect at some point these recorded lessons will get less frequent as i progress to ones i haven't seen before).

In the first one you are totally out of tune, I think a half step low relative to the backing track. If you can't hear that, I don't know what to tell you.

David - Thank you. Yes i can definitely hear it when i play it back. I think i had difficulty just picking those two strings while attempting to mute out the other strings. This is causing some strange noises that i can now hear. I recorded it again focusing more on muting and keeping the strum going on the two open strings. This one of the 3 was a real challenge for me. It is still not perfect but i could be here a long while if I'm seeking perfection on each of these lessons.

Peter I applaud you for forging ahead in BGU and maintaining the discipline of recording and posting your sound. Most of the time I think I have something down, thinking it sounds good...when I record and play it back hours or days later it doesn't sound very good. Sometimes it sounds awful. But the learning and improvement is more rewarding (to me) from having that record of where I was. And something about the discipline of publicly sharing the recording and experience helps keep me pushing on when I feel giving up guitar for something easier. I sure hope that it is helping you because I know that you put a lot of time into getting this far.

Your guitar comes out of the mix better in your second recording. You are concentrating hard on what You are playing, it comes across in your sound. When you get to the point where you are listening to the other instruments as you play, you will hear a difference in your recordings. Repetition will help a lot, listening helps, intentionally feeling the rhythm helps and just continuing to push yourself to play new things outside your comfort zone helps.

BGU is a tough course for a beginner, your resolve to learn and your persistence are commendable. You are correct that the later lessons will take longer. Some of them took me a month of daily practice just to be able to record a decent take at the slow tempo. But I assure that the course rewarded me and it will you as well if you continue to invest your time in it. Griff is an excellent teacher and the BGU course you have in your hands has proven itself over time with A LOT of players.

I hope we have an opportunity to play together again soon. I enjoyed our brief jam sessions in Dallas a few week ago !

That was much better! It's always a problem for me when I feel I need to make a negative comment, but also make it constructive. Thanks for taking it in that vein.

Maybe its not out of tune because he was playing Jazz blues :)

Well, it's possible :)
