Out All Night

Just the start to a little something going through my head.

A ten cent beer and a picture of you
Sitting on a stool wondering what to do
Should I go home now, or stay out all night
Cause I just don't what's wrong and what's right

Walking the streets till the break of dawn
Those stray cats howling all night long
Should I go back now, or stay out all night
I just can't tell, what's been wrong or right

Chorus

A cute little devil with a blue dress on
A big fat mama that's all ready gone
A couple in the corner trying to make it right
I guess it is what it is when you stay out all night

Hopefully more will come..

Excellent, was trying to think of the chorus...keep it coming...

Chorus:???

Walking the streets tonight
Walking the streets tonight
My heart tells me something ain't right

Actually, the four lines below the word chorus, are the chorus. I'm just trying to figure out the chord structure for it. The verses are standard 12-bar blues but I want the chorus to pick it up a bit, if you know what I mean.

Tim, you are right, being a newbie I am learning... ::)

I play 'err' guitar.
I like it too, but it may not easily fit the 12-bar format?  (Maybe I'm just singing it wrong in my head.)

A lot of 12-bar blues songs seem to use up all the early "I" bars by repeating the lines.  When you don't do that, I think maybe you need a lot of words to fill up 12 bars.

I tried chunking the lyrics into 12 bars, writing each bar on a separate line broken into the phrases I'd be likely to sing. If each verse has 12 bars, it should have 12 lines?

Maybe its me, but when I tried yours, I was running out of words before I ran out of bars.  ;)  I tossed in some lyrics of my own as an example... just repeated them each verse.

(I chord)
1. A ten cent beer
2. and a picture of you
3. Sitting on a stool
4. wondering what to do

(IV chord)
5. Should I go home now,
6. or stay out all night

(I chord)
7. Cause I just don't know what's wrong
8. and what's right

(V chord)
9. Oh, baby,

(IV chord)
10. you give me the all night blues

(I chord)
11. I'll just stay out
12. Cuz I ain't got nothin' to lose

Walking the streets
till the break of dawn
Those stray cats howling
all night long
Should I go back now,
or stay out all night
I just can't tell,
what's been wrong or right
Oh, baby,
you give me the all night blues
I'll just stay out
Cuz I ain't got nothin' to lose

A cute little devil
with a blue dress on
A big fat mama
that's all ready gone
A couple in the corner

Where did you see the chord changes in your original?  A lot of blues songs don't have many words...  :-/

Marv

I play 'err' guitar.
It occurred to me that some bars might have no words at all, leaving room for instrumental fills. Could still use the 12 line approach to organize the structure of the song, but a lot fewer words are needed!

Yeah, not counting the "free" ones in the casinos here, the best I've found is $.50 at the local pizza place.  [smiley=beer.gif]

I'm fooling around with a couple different chord structures neither of which are straight 12-bar.

One is a 1-4-5-4 structure and the other is too hard to explain although based on 1-4-1-4-1-4-1-4 for the verses and 4-1-4-1-4-1-5-4-1 for the chorus.

It must have been a while since you had a beer if they only cost 10 cents.
You really have to get out more.
The song sounds like your most of the way there.
I don't think you should think about it too much and just play it a couple of dozen times and it will fall into place.
But what would I know?

I have found it much easier to have the chords/riff before I start writing lyrics--I record the chords, put them on a loop,
and start writing whatever comes out, usally it is pretty raw, then start tweaking it--changing words around--comming up with a bridge--trying to write it around the riff. I have a few songs like this written on the V,IV,I,V chord turnaround

@ Carlos : Funny thing ... I can write lyrics all day and all night every day ... can't put it to music EVER ...

Give it a try, put on a backing track--and see what happens. ;)
Carlos

Good idea ... will give that a try when I can fit it in.

Also : I am currently working Griff's Guitar Theory course ... I am sure that will benefit me in the future  :)

By-the-Way : Really like your lyrics Tim   [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I'm interested in the bars with the 10 cent beers?
+1 I like the rhyme and meter to the lyrics but would really like to know where to get those 10 cent beers as well. [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=beer.gif] [smiley=beer.gif]

I've just heard Marv 's 4share version.
Great rendition of what should be playing in my bar if  I had one.
You both rock well done.
