What to do with a lick

Most all your courses you supply licks and solos but what do you do with a random lick that is not yours that is given to us and showed how to use it or how about 2 licks that are kind of completely different. How do you use it or string them together or do they have to be somewhat compatible together. Not sure I'm saying this in the right manner but...

Where most folks fall down with this is they don't completely learn all the qualities of a lick, so it's harder to use.
