Republic Resonator

I've been thinking about a Republic Highway 61 for a while but there is no stock available.
Anybody bought one of these? Kev? Anybody played one?
Any recommendations on the pickup choice? Apparently the volume control is an aftermarket purchase and installation.
I'm wondering about the quality , set up etc. Medium relief/ action seems to be the standard. I want to pick and slide.
Thanks,
Pat B

I was actually talking to the Mrs a couple of weeks ago and told her that one of those would be the next guitar I get...especially if I'm wanting to learn some slide this year. I've heard nothing but good things about them, but I've never actually had the opportunity to play one. I've been eyeing the tri-cone model.

I have Gretsch resonator currently for sale on Craigslist if you are interested. I bought it thinking I could use it in the band I was in, but the feedback issues made it impossible to deal with, for me at least. It's a good guitar other than that, but in it's defense I think most resonators have similar issues. Send me a pm if interested.

Yup, I've got one! I had THEM put Lace sensor pickups in, but haven't added a volume control (although I have the part, just haven't gotten around to it).

Don't have a lot to compare it to, but I know that Joe Satriani has one (forget which album he used it on), and Keb' Mo' uses one extensively. I know that Steve Morse has one, but hasn't used it on an album yet.

Aren't most resonators main use for acoustic music? I can't say that I've ever seen an electric band using a resonator? When is the last time you've seen Derek Trucks using something besides an SG for slide? Or Joe Bonamassa? Anybody? Muddy Waters used a Tele for slide. Johnny Winter had the first Highway 61 off the line and he still used his Firebird on stage.

I'm pretty sure Keb Mo is acoustic. Did Joe Satriani just use his in the studio and something different on stage? And it doesn't sound like something that Steve Morse would play on a stage either?

I thought about getting one with a Lace Sensor pup (a noiseless pup) also. Not so much for a big stage with a lot of feedback problems but more for recording or through a simple acoustic amp for a slight boost. Resonators are loud as it is.

Yeah - for Satch and Morse they're used for "spice in the chili" - to get a vibe in a song on an album with background guitar.

Don't think you'll see either of them sporting a resonator on a live stage. :)

I have a Republic Duolian Single Cone Resonator and also a Gretsch "Alligator " like the one Tommy has for sale. In the past I had an Epiphone Hound Dog Dobro, but I sold it, see below. In comparison I would comment as follows.

Fit & Finish:- All are made in China, the Republic is supposedly set up and tested in Austin before release to a customer. Both the Republic & Gretsch are nicely made with no obvious flaws. If I run my fingers down the side of the fretboard I can just slightly feel the frets on the Republic, not on the Gretsch, otherwise they are equal. The Epiphone in comparison is poorly made. The Republic is probably a more sturdy instrument than the Gretsch.

Playability :- The metal body on the Republic makes it heavy and somewhat out of balance. I would not want to play it standing up for any length of time. However if you play gigs where they have bar fights it would be a lethal weapon!! The string recommendations from the manufacturers are 12-53 for the Gretsch & 13-56 on the Republic and that's the way I keep them. Both fingerboards are relatively wide and quite flat, the action is a tad higher on the Republic and the string tension feels a little higher also. Both are good for fingerpicking with the wider board. The Epiphone is strung with 16's which tore my fingers up and so I played it with metal fingerpicks which I don't like because I find it makes muting more difficult. I didn't try lighter strings because of the sound issues, see below. The Epiphone is also heavy. The Republic I have is 14 frets to the body, the others are 12, I prefer 14 to reach the higher frets easier with a slide but most resonators are 12. In overall playability I would give the nod to the Gretsch.

Sound :- The Republic is loud and sustains forever especially on the bass side so your damping technique has to be really good. The Gretsch has a more nasal sound than the Republic. Both sound like a resonator should with a slight edge to the Republic in this category. The Epiphone just doesn't project, not at all.

Electrics :- My Republic is acoustic only, so I can't comment. I have pick ups in the Gretsch and Epiphone but just to use for recording purposes not to play out. Here the Epiphone was better than the Gretsch.

Overall :- The Republic is really set up to play slide, the Gretsch is more versatile in that you could also play it as a regular acoustic guitar and get a "different" sound. If you're new to slide paying and fingerpicking then the Gretsch is probably easier to learn on. If I just had to have one resonator it would be the Gretsch but the Republic is a really nice instrument but more demanding, or should I say less forgiving of mistakes.

Hope that helps.

Desmo was my dog. RIP big guy
I'll give one more thumbs up to the Gretsch Alligator. I have one that I bought 4-5 years ago. It did develop a buzz but I figured out that it was the tailpiece just barely contacting the resonator under certain weather conditions. Multiple ways to fix it but the weather changed and I never got around to it.

I bought the guitar to learn slide on but ended up using it for fingerpicking instead. I use my Martin for standard tning and the Gretsch for any alternate tunings.

I don't have anything useful to add to this thread other than my own resonator porn below.. They are not easy to play (for me) but its going to be yet another retirement project... I heard nothing but good things on republic when I was doing my research years ago... But somehow I settled in on a Mule..

Hey Jack, I remember when you were waiting for you Mule to be built. Do they have one in a cut-away like the Highway 61?

Wow! That is a beauty!! It's a little above my pay grade this year with all of my moving then backyard retaining walls with landscaping expenses. Hopefully I will be able to find something like this in about a year.
I think the re-seller is taking advantage of the long wait time they now have.... Mine direct did not cost that much...

P.S. I'm into landscaping, send me some pics of your project...

A resonator (steel bodied, round neck) and an f hole mandolin are on my list of string holders. The problem is parting with something else to get one.

I bought one of these a few months ago. https://republicguitars.com/collections/highway-61-standard/products/highway-61-red-copper-rust

Like the link says, I got one of the ones that looks like it was laying around in a junk yard. I love the feel and the sound of this guitar. I hate he gig bag. The zipper broke in the first week or so. Has anyone found a hard case that works for this small guitar?
