{"id":7490,"date":"2019-01-03T21:20:25","date_gmt":"2019-01-04T05:20:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bluesguitarunleashed.com\/blog\/?p=7490"},"modified":"2024-01-24T19:22:24","modified_gmt":"2024-01-25T03:22:24","slug":"how-many-scales-do-you-need","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bluesguitarunleashed.com\/blog\/how-many-scales-do-you-need\/","title":{"rendered":"How Many Scales Do You Need?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today is a little bit listening, but with a purpose, so maybe grab some coffee&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not uncommon, if you&#8217;re kind of new to playing the blues, to think that the &#8220;same old&#8221; blues scale we all use a lot is not getting you what you want out of it.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, people come to me and ask me to teach them other scales and sounds, and it took me a long time to realize that it wasn&#8217;t because they wanted to learn other scales, it was because they were not happy with the sounds they were hearing from their pentatonic and blues scales.<\/p>\n<p>Believe it or not &#8211; those are two VERY different situations!<\/p>\n<p>So, if you think that you need more notes, and that the pentatonic scale is not enough for you, I submit the following as proof to the contrary:<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-plugin-new youtube\" style=\"max-width:100%; width:640px; height:auto; padding-top:0; padding-bottom:0; margin:0 auto;margin:0 auto; border: 0px solid #fff;margin-bottom: 20px;\"><div style=\"width:640px;height:0;  padding-bottom: 75%; padding-top:0;\"><iframe width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rb53-sDII0o?wmode=opaque&showinfo=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;controls=1&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;vq=&amp;rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<p>I&#8217;ve listened to, and watched that song a whole lot of times, and I have yet to find anything outside of the E minor pentatonic\/blues scale.<\/p>\n<p>Or how about something a little more on the traditional blues side like this:<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-plugin-new youtube\" style=\"max-width:100%; width:640px; height:auto; padding-top:0; padding-bottom:0; margin:0 auto;margin:0 auto; border: 0px solid #fff;margin-bottom: 20px;\"><div style=\"width:640px;height:0;  padding-bottom: 75%; padding-top:0;\"><iframe width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BKY8KIt9kqc?wmode=opaque&showinfo=0&amp;autoplay=0&amp;controls=1&amp;modestbranding=1&amp;vq=&amp;rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Now, granted, Albert King played upside down so you have to use your ears on this one, but I can&#8217;t hear a single note outside of the minor blues scale, no matter how many times I listen.<\/p>\n<p>So&#8230; the next time you feel like you need more notes to make your statement, spend some time listening and charging up your brain with ideas instead of running off to try to find more scales.
