We all do it every new year… the dreaded New Year’s Resolutions<\/em>…<\/p>\n

So I’m gonna make this real simple and get to the point, I want to know yours for the upcoming year… but there’s a catch (there’s always a catch \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n

Of course, let’s keep them guitar-specific… I need to lose 15 pounds too but that’s not what we’re here for.<\/p>\n

Also, goals need to be specific, so really try to focus on one (or maybe 2 or 3) single elements. And really think about what you would consider “success.”<\/p>\n

In other words, “I want to play a blues solo this year,” doesn’t really help anyone (especially you.) But something like “I want to be able to play an improvised solo over a shuffle feel like Sweet Home Chicago for 2 choruses,” makes perfect sense and is WAY more easy to go after.<\/p>\n

Or something like, “I want to play some songs,” also doesn’t really help you. But if you change that into “I want to play The Thrill Is Gone at my local open jam,” or “I want to play and sing Steam Roller Blues at the local open mic” is totally do-able this year.<\/p>\n

Finally – we’re only going to think about the first quarter of 2016, not the whole year. So your goal is actually for the end of March (or maybe April since we’re already a week into 2016.)<\/p>\n

Oh, you need a why? Partially it’s selfish and hearing where you want to be this year helps me decide where to focus my time (in the form of new videos) but mostly I think it’s important for you to take a few minutes and think about where you want to be 12 weeks from now.<\/p>\n

Most people way overestimate what they can do in a day, but way underestimate what they can do in a year and I’ve seen this many times as a teacher. Breaking things down to 1\/4 of a year at a time seems to work much better.<\/p>\n
