Matt “Guitar” Murphy is one of the great Chicago blues guitarists still alive and playing today.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

I’ve been writing a posts about a lot of the really great blues guitar players, including those that fronted their own groups and some that might not have had the spotlight but still tore of the guitar. Well one of the big ones that I haven’t written about yet has been Matt “Guitar” Murphy. While he may have been popularized as one of the guitarists for the Blues Brothers, he was playing a long time before that gig came along. In fact, the roster includes appearances with Howlin’ Wolf, Muddy Waters, James Cotton, Memphis Slim, Chuck Berry and a whole lot of other popular musicians. The cool thing is, he’s still playing today. I collected a few performances from Matt over the years from his time with Memphis Slim, a recording with James Cotton, and a live appearance with the Blues Brothers. All are great performances with some stellar blues guitar work. I hope you enjoy watching all the videos as much as I did!<\/p>\n

Another one of the groups Matt was a part of was James Cotton’s group. In fact one of their live performances was recorded, featuring Matt on guitar and a solid lineup in the rest of the band too.
