So I was listening to some Joe Bonamassa and I heard this groove and just really dug it… so much that I thought I’d make a lesson out of it.

Not much to say about it – watch, play, enjoy 🙂

Thank you Griff…This sounds helpful, I’ll give it a try

Griff I love Joe and haven’t really looked at your transcription yet, I’m still waking up from your show last night “,IT WAS AWSOME”!!!! It exceeded all my expectations, you and your Laura are a force of nature. I met at least 30-40 other of your students from Maine to Tulsa , California, and my home state Louisiana/Texas and loved all who I and my wife Fran met .

      Great track,great lesson

Hi Griff. I like to see more of early rythium & blues to birth of rock& roll tunes and riffs from Bo Didley, Buddy Holley, Scotty Moore and Junior Brown the guitar man who introduced the double neck git steel guitar. It’s a history lesson of sorts.

    • Mike K

You have some great sounding tone.

    • jim

When I grow up I want to be able to hear and nail licks just like Griff nailed this turnaround!!
      Great lesson, Griff! Thanks!

    • Bob

This is great. I really enjoy listening to Joe B. However, I am a rank beginner at soloing and this is beyond me. I am struggling with your Soloing Without Scales course and even had trouble on your four note solo videos. I like to see more VERY beginner soloing lessons to get me started so that I can graduate to something like this. Do you already have something like that or a recommendation? Lots of courses out there and it is hard to know which one is right. Maybe I should have done one of your other courses rather than the SWS one.

By the way, I really appreciate that you rarely play anything fancier than what you expect us to be able to do. Most teachers show off more than they teach. You have the chops to have easily done that here and you didn’t, so thanks.

      • Robert M

You have all those fabulous guitars. How about saying something about your collection. From watching your videos I was able to count 8 guitars is that a fact?

      • PatB

Bob, 3 years and several courses later, I know I should have started with Beginners Blues Guitar Unleashed. It will get you started and playing some solos.
        Hope this helps.

      Hey Griff,
Nice and Cool I also like Joe B stuff. Cool shirt soon you will be bundling shirts in the courses. Advertising is everything maybe you should put up a BGU T-Shirt for sale on your website with your website on it. I am sure a lot of members of BGU would like to have one. I get out to a lot of clubs in my age group to watch Bands especially the guitarists and you might just get a few folks wanting a musical hobby in retirement if they see I am wearing a BGU T-Shirt. As long as it is in 3 colours. A) Black, B)Red C) White.
I am keeping this in my library for when I advance a bit. All good.

Hi Griff. Great lesson as always.

Could you give me your thoughts on the left hand position Joe uses when playing this riff. Joe is using his thumb on the sixth string (but you don’t). I’m moving over to blues (from classical) and using your thumb like that is completely foreign.

Is it worth me learning the technique Joe is using?

    • Ken Little aka cowboy

I’m a Brit but I love that shirt so can you tell me where you got it if poss ty,..ok to business, thanks to you I now have a great solo and bridge to my blues numbers..the main one being Bad Boy Blues,..which my friends and I play at my open mic in Southend name of Fretz Open Mic,..under the stage name of..Scraping the Barrel..lol,and I picked this track up far quicker then I would have thought possible again thanks to your teaching of timing etc..I have recommended you to may people so take heart my friend ..you change the lives of people ..people like myself a 63yr out of work thru injury over 14yrs but I see your post Griff Hamlin and it’s like chatting with an old friend….and there I am till 3am playing my heart out out unplugged of course lol..again many many thanks.Ken Little..aka cowboy.

    • bishop

thanks griff super lesson have a good thanksgiving

    • robert

thanks thats fun griff turn it up run the neighbors to town LOL you can take things like that a lot of direrent directions.

    • MikeJones

these tips are always so timely for me. it seems like you answer my questions as I think.
What did you mean when you said guitarists don’t care what key they’re in? Often when
I ask at a jam what the key is, I get odd looks.
      thanks Griff!

    • Mark Arnold

Super great lesson Griff happy Thanksgiving to you and yours !

    • tony

just a couple of remarks here . You really have to listen carefully to figure out the key a song is played in . I was once really stomped an hung up on playing night moves by B.Segar . Turns out I put a capo on the first fret and that was that. This shuffle feel sounds a little like Claptons further on up the road no?

    • saddler

Great Lesson Griff. Love Joe Bonamassa’s music got to try and learn this one. Keep up the great work, Lovin it

    • Charlie Banana

I want that shirt Griff !

    • Art

WHAT AN AWESOME LESSON AND HAVING TO WORK THE FINGER ROCKING AND TRYING TO GET THOSE LITTLE HITS THAT ARE REALLY ANYTHING BUT MAKE THE RIFF SWEET. THANKS AS ALWAYS AS I’VE HAD A BLAST WORKING IT. THANKS ALSO FOR THE BACKING WITH THE DRUMS AND BASS TO WORK ALONG WITH. OUTSTANDING LESSON GRIFF

    • Mike

Great lesson Griff! Thanks. Very helpful, as usual.

    • Ray Jackson

Another great download and if I weren’t such a lazy B and plugged in my lecy instead of always playing your lessons out on my acoustic, I would have nailed it quicker.

My belief is, if I can do it on my acoustic then, no problem when I plug in my lecy. The only trouble is I can then tend to over cook it, as bending and hammering on on the acoustic takes a little bit more effort.

Guess I’m fundamentally just a lazy git! or just a natural acoustic player? Whichever, it’s fun and that’s all that matters.

      Thanks Griff. Ray (UK)

      Re: Joe B groove and F# key….
Joe Bonamassa – I Got All You Need (Live At Shepherds Bush Empire London
      27/03/2013) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nw1FrO6A70k
Clearly shows F# position 2nd fret and standard tuning. And sounds
      correct, playing along with video.

Thank you. Love your music and lessons.

    • Ian Robins

Awesome, Griff. Thanks so much. Great to learn some JB stuff.

    • Dolson80301

Great lesson. I love the fingering breakdown that just doesn’t happen in Tabs without your demonstrating how easy it really is. Some of us try to hit the note as notes not part of a chord fingering etc. and it becomes harder to play. After watching how you do it including the muted strings, its so much easier…
      Thanks

      • riche

Thanks for this awesome lesson Griff! You broke everything down in such detail that I don’t even need the tab, though it’s good to have. The jam track is a great bonus. I will incorporate this groove, along with the box 1 and 4 riffs, into my arsenal. I love Joe B.s guitar playing, and your coverage of this song sounded awesome as well. I also happen to love the key of F# minor. Cheers!

    • JimJ

I really, really appreciate the downloads~!
      Another fine lesson, Griff.
      Thank you~!
You are the best teacher of guitar that I have ever had~!!
I am so glad to be your customer and student.

      I appreciate you.
