Cold Shot Style Groove
This is a fun style to try and get down. Just like lesson 10 in the Blues Guitar Unleashed course (the Texas Shuffle,) you have to kind of just play this full speed as soon as you can… even though it won’t sound that good yet.
It’s more about cleaning it up at full speed than speeding it up. At least that’s been my experience. Try and memorize the notes fast and then just play it and go for it.

I know how you feel griff , I grew just a couple of miles from him in oak cliff and never got to meet or see him .

Properly playing cold shot is not hard at all There’s many videos that show Stevie Ray Vaughan playing this song but 90% of it is in his picking hand The way he hits the strings, that sweeping j-stroke motion.

I met him once in Glendale, Ca. There is DVD called live at Antone’s I think.
He is in it and several truly amazing Guitar players. He was just starting out and his style was truly different then.
any guitar player should watch the video. It is a none stop playing of some of the best. Nice video on the style. As most people in the business are aware so many people are never herd of unless you sell your sole to Rock and Role. I got a pair of his Fender Texas pickups 20 years ago they are very cool. yes there on a fender Strat. Over 200 bucks back then. It was part of his recorded sound for years.

Thanks, Griff! I haven’t made it to lesson 10 yet but will keep plugging. And talk about bummed, I was in college in Austin when SRV played every night at Antones. And I never went! Like you, I was all about rock ‘n roll. A terrible youthful indiscretion!
My good friend and I became SRV fans in the early eighties after seeing him on Austin City Limits. Found out he was playing an outdoor concert in Greenville MS about two hours from us. We loaded up with the wives and headed up there. Got there about 10 PM just in time to see his hour long set from twenty yards from the stage. Absolutely awesome! This was the Double Trouble pre Reese Wynans keyboard period, which I actually preferred.

Lucky enough to see him twice but bummed that I could have seen him 2 more times before he hit the big time. Gave him a Hendrix photo when he was in Orlando.
Great video, Griff. I am blessed to have seen Stevie Ray live four times; twice at Summerfest in Milwaukee in the early 80’s, and twice at the Fox Theater in St. Louis (first when he toured with Jeff Beck and then with Joe Cocker). All great shows…

Cold shot with a gawd awful ugly Blond as his girlfriend, A Texas Cowboy with a SWEET Long legged Beauty. Been a few years playing his tunes, on My Mexican Fender strat (Sorry) It was all I could afford at the time. One of the great/best videos was Stevie and his Brother Jimmy playing a tune together on a two neck guitar. I’m sure its been around, but I just start to weep when I see that. Those Texas boys were born to Play! Griff, always the best lessons here, as usual! Always stay after work and run through your video lessons, and start pickin when I get home. I have a 46 year old Yamaha acoustic at work so everyone hears me for an hour a day. The office girls like it when I play Pride & Joy.. They all sing along.!! Take Care, HVAC David from Plymouth Ma.

I used to see him and his brother play around Austin in the 70’s. We liked him. He frequently played at a little dive bar called the One Knite. It was so loud, I could only enjoy it while standing outside.

Great fan of Stevie myself , I grew up a couple of miles From the Vaughan’s and didn’t know about
Stevie til 90 or 91 unfortunately.
But he’s the reason I play today .
Hands down I thinks he’s the best player I’ve ever heard .
Stevie was outstanding! Saw him three times, and loved all of them. Saw The Arc Angels on the 4th of July in Austin – Free. Great show, and a great time.
Saw Stevie at The Ohio State fair in ‘87. Gregg Allman band opened. I was only 18 but knew this guy was special. Stevie wasn’t cleaned up yet but he could rip your face off with one massive bend. Man do I miss him, still got his music though. Thanks for the lesson Griff!
So I was thinking of going to his last show at red rocks Colorado, but thought ide catch him next time, my co – worker ( who just happened to be in AA at the time went down, decided on an AA meeting before the show in Morrison Co. lo and behold Stevie was in the meeting! They had the meeting and he got to talk to him afterwards, he noticed the tics sticking out of his shirt and said ,” you coming to see me tonight man?, he said he’ll yeah! Stevie said “ see you there brother!
Greatest challenge for me is to keep the middle finger muting the 5th string while I’m moving the other fingers – any ideas how to practice on that?

The first time that I heard about Stevie Ray was the week after his death. I was cadding in The Milwaukee Open. The talk was about the crash at nearby Alpine Valley. DJ’s were playing Stevie’s music.
Thanks Griff. I’ve noticed on some of SRV performances that Stevie seems to play more on the pads of fingers (not necessarily the tips)

I saw him live a bunch of times. Like jim said.he was a regular dude. I lived in humboldt. His tour ended him up there one nite. He played at humboldt state at the theater up there. A very small venue. Well our band was playing at the red lion that nite. He wandered in there and took over the band stand. I cant remember dancing and singing more in my life. I had his tape. And an idol for the rest of his life. I actually cried when i heard the news of his passing. 😭🙏stevie was a bad motorscooter! You go baby in heaven with jimi and the rest!
Never will forget New Years eve 1985. Got to see Double Trouble from a table sitting about eight feet from the stage at a club called rhe Boathouse in Norfolk VA. Good friends great music and cold draft beer.
