  1. Sweet. I’ve been working on the short one-bar licks. This is raising the bar for me – but is eminently doable. I love the idea of playing by myself (without having to sing a melody all the time).

    Good stuff, Griff. Thank you.

Some nice nifty moves which bring together lots of bits and pieces that I have picked up along the way.

  3. Robert Taylor says:

Just as normally Griff you are awesome!

  4. Awesome Thanks Griff!

  5. Awesome, Thanks Griff

  6. Gaz T says:

    Great series of lessons
    Thanks heaps

I love this stuff! I worked on the material from the first video and added a “thump bass” to all of the licks which sounds really cool and works well over the E and A chords. It’s a little awkward over the B chord so you can just play the bass B on beat one.

Also I noticed the similarity between example 2 of the 1st video and measure 7 of Spent Money Blues. The 2 licks can be interchanged and/or merged to create another variation.

I’m starting to get aq bit better but slowly

  9. This is great. Exactly what I need.

Can I ask what string gauge you are using on that Taylor?

    Griff:
This stuff is so helpful to those of us without bands, and very little prospect ever being in one. Fun, cool sounding stuff to play that ups my guitar game in the process – I am 60 and will have been playing for two years in September. Very clear and thorough presentation, so well done, as usual.

  11. East Coast Bill says:

Love these lessons. Long enough for a challenge and short enough to pick up quickly.

  12. steve says:

I appreciate the theory/technique information about how the same lick can work with different chords. I need to know why something works, not just “do this in such-and-such order”.

  13. Great stuff as always Griff.
Just scratched the surface of the new course. Looking forward to it.

  14. Jake says:

Griff is simply the best guitar teacher I have ever seen. Unlike the other subscription online guitar lessons, Griff brings some personality and is do good at explaining the technique. I have transferred his BGU and 52RL to the piano, as well, and it is amazing how much you can improve in such short time with Griffs lessons. And he has such great lesson ideas! We are all so lucky to have found him.

  15. Jake says:

For those of you that are not signed up for Griff’s courses, which are cheap and NOT a subscription (most of them), these short free lessons are just a taste of what you get with the actual course. BGU, his groundbreaking blues guitar course is invaluable. But sign up for BGU2. It has better media quality and tabs. You won;t regret it!

  16. Billy says:

I love this short simple stuff. I started playing 5 years ago and bought BGU. Most of those lessons were beyond my ability at the time. However I could play the playing on the porch stuff.

The 1st lick from yesterday’s lesson is very similar to some of those examples from the book.

Hi Griff. The thing I noticed about this video and the previous one is that you have your right foot up on a stand – your knee is up there in the camera’s view. You don’t use a stand when you play electric – not even the 335. So how come you use a foot-stand for the big-bodied Taylor but not for the small-bodied electrics? I would have thought it would be the other way around. Just an observation. Great lessons!

Looking back through several videos it appears that I might be wrong about you not using a foot stand when you play electric? Maybe just these couple your right knee has been more obvious than is normally the case.

Griff this is really great as usual

  19. Philip says:

    Hey Griff,
thanks for the really helpful lesson and great energy. I can not find the accompanying video of one bar licks you mentioned at the begiining of this video.
    thanks again.

Good stuff, Griff. Thanks for the resend.

  21. Raul Moralez says:

    Great. I’m on it.

  22. Ernest Peterson says:

I have most all your courses, but I think this one will be a great help for just relaxing while playing guitar by myself. Another reply last week referred to you as his playing partner. I kind of like that, so that’s how I’m thinking of you – my playing partner.

  23. Don Craig says:

Cool, I think I can do that.

  24. Dennis Alberson says:

Thanks for all your videos and I did get this one, Dennis

I live in an apartment so playing my acustic guitar is not possible so I will be doing it on my electric guitar with head phones on…

  28. Jack Flash says:

I the tadpoles are connected to a bar across the top does that mean u pick down and if it is on the bottom with them going up does that mean u pick up wards?

  29. George Mabry says:

Griff, you are a National Treasure.

  30. Chad Harland says:

Griff as I come onto this new level of understanding, things your teaching are being put into my playing right away. It took alot of study and practice, an I mean what seemed like endless hours, for theory to start to appear on my finger tips. These 2 videos 1 bar and 2 bar licks are awsome, when the student is ready the teacher will come

  31. Ryan says:

    Thanks great little licks!
It seems that you play the double stops with a slight bend to them… I’m surprised you don’t mention that… It does change the flavor!

  32. john D says:

    just asking

Griff why do you send me the same videos over and over ?

  33. Dan Garrett says:

Griff, I’m 69 and next year will begin my 7th year in my guitar journey. Along with a fabulous personal teacher, your videos/courses have helped me tremendously. These solo licks are great, and I especially loved the Speed Building course!

  34. Roy Rupert says:

I’ve been playing for 54 years but have forgotten more than I realized. I have always had a hard time learning licks. Your videos from the emails have been great getting me back into expanding my musicianship.

  35. Jussi says:

I bought earlier this year Playing on the porch course and enjoyed it a lot. These 1 bar licks and 2 bar licks are excellent follow-up to it.
    Thank you.

  36. Barry Shaver says:

    Thanks Griff and Happy Holidays…

  37. Michael says:

Hey great blues lessons thank you Mome

  38. Wow!! I love your productions. I have been learning a lot when I watch them. I’m 77 years young and have been on a constant journey of learning how to play this here guitar.
You’re doing a great job of teaching me Griff. It’s been a slow process. I have arthritic fingers which makes it tough to practice on a regular basis. But I’ll keep working at it until I can’t anymore. I hope that day never comes because playing the guitar gives me great pleasure. Thanks for being there Griff. You are much appreciated.
    Thank you!

  39. Jerry says:

I’ve decided to christen you the B Man, you B the best Blues Man on the planet.

    Thank you.
