This is solo #1 from the Blues Guitar Unleashed DVD Series.
Aside from the fact that I use it in other lessons, it's a great solo for a blues in the key of A in a straight (as in... not a swing) feel.
It's a moderate tempo... not slow, but certainly not fast either. And I made it a point to keep the licks reasonable and playable by just about anyone at the appropriate level.
Now, if you're a beginner... this is way too hard and I have to point you to the Beginning Blues Guitar course first.
But if you've been doing okay on the previous lessons I've been sending out, this should be a LOT of fun for you (not to mention pretty impressive to those around you.)
Here's a play-along video for it

My copy of Blues Guitar Unleashed has only recently arrived looking forward to jumping in with both feet.
Loved the 'Back Porch blues' session.
The Jam Tracks CD is brilliantly well done too, please give all those involved a pat on the back as I can't reach from this side of the pond.
Many thanks.
Colin Campbell
I bought your Blues Guitar Unleashed course over a month ago and it is brilliant value for money.
I am still enjoying improving my Solo 1 efforts.
Is there any chance you could provide some tabs of your good improvised blues licks?
You have demonstrated some in a few of the regular tutorial videos you provide but as they are not part of the lesson they are not tabbed.
Mark
Hi Griff Ive been combining some licks from Buddy Guy Jimi Hendrix BB King and so on this lesson here reminds me of what my Dad taught me when I was young its the chords so to speak that goes with the Guitar shuffle Thanks alot I appreiciate your lessons

Have to say a massive thank you Griff for making my life liveable again!! Your lessons (and I have tried a few web tutorials) are superb. I put on some Muddy Waters stuff and found to my amazement that not only can I play along mostly but I can add in some simple licks of my own.
Your 4 note solo helped me with finger dexterity and timing but also learning some major scales along with the minor is giving me so much fun.
Brilliant!
Ann
I would love more riffs like this one.
barry
thanks Griff. from Barry sore fingers .

thanks this is great!! i get lost of mails of people claiming to give free guitar courses but most of the time it's just publicity for their DVD's.Now this is what i like so much about you is that you are actually us giving some really cool stuff to work on...a real lesson....not just some publicity for the DVD's you are selling....so thanks a lot a lot a lot for that...and your teaching is very good...!!

Hello Griff,
Mentioned to my wife prior to xmas 2011,that I was intending on buying me a electric guitar & Amp in the new year 2012,well griff she decided to give me one as a xmas present,so i set about looking on the internet for info on amps/guitars how they were made etc, trying to get an understanding what they are made up of. Anyway after finding what i was looking for,I decided to look for guitar lessons,as i was searching I noticed a particular advertisement saying PLAY THE BLUES IN 4 NOTES...I thought no way,so i looked in on that particular source, needless to say I was totally convinced and bought your product,I used to play by ear via accoustic years ago but never continued and never owned a guitar,as you mentioned stuck in a rut...Look Griff I can talk on and on about this,so I'd like to thank you the last couple of weeks have been forfilling, one thing,i havnt been reading your emails till today, awesum how you keep us informed,I will recommend you to anyone...Cheers Dionlee

I really, really like it. It's great that I can download it and play it over and over until I learn it with the tabs. It's a wonderful gesture that you share your music and experience with other wanabe musicians.

Hi Griff,
Great little solo, which has given me a very pleasant afternoon's enjoyment while awaiting the arrival of the BGU course. I've just about got it nailed now and it sounds pretty cool. I am impressed by your teaching style which augers well for the quality of the main course.
I've been learning to play guitar for over 50 years now and have wasted years widdling around learning a multitude of licks, riffs and runs etc, but never really understanding their relationship, nor what to do with them. My wife [who is a talented flautist] brought it all to a head the other day when she asked me to play something for her that was recognizable as music and I failed miserably! I realized then that I needed a properly structured and coordinated course if I was ever going to be able to play the blues properly.
Hence my decision, after extensive internet research, to enroll on your Blues Guitar Unleashed course. I await its arrival with eager anticipation!
Kind regards,
Peter Walker

I'm a really slow learner and my fingers don't move as fast as yours, but I really enjoy the sounds you help me make, even if they aren't as cool as the ones coming from your guitar. Thank you.

Great video. I appreciate your hard work Griff! Keep it comin'.
John
I can't really tell when you have you pinky finger in play. You have ever thing so close that I can't tell what finger you are using. Please be very careful to show what finger is hitting what string and what fret.
Jim
i really like this lick, Griff. You rock, Dude

I think I bought the wrong course. this is too basic. what do I do Griff?

Hey Griff, Thanks for helping me get back into the groove of playing again. I have been playing for 40 years and put it down about 10 years ago. Only playing occasionally. I felt stuck in a rut and didn't really like what I was doing. I have played different styles but never felt like they were mine. I have been plunking at the blues for a while and found you on the net. I absolutely enjoy the way you teach and show how to play. I have never had lessons, outside of my father, and have really enjoyed playing along with your videos. They have opened my eyes to a lot that I didn't know and after all this time, I'm actually happy again playing. I can't wait to get your CD's after the first of the year and look forward to learning what your "not" putting on the net
Thanks for sharing your gift and love of music.

Hey Griff, A couple of weeks ago I didn't know a guitar neck from a nut... that's how much of a beginner I am. But, thanks to the great info, tips & videos you've been sending me, I not only know my way around a guitar, up to & including tuning & restringing, I can also manage a fairly decent "noise" that is close to being actual music, something I would have thought impossible after so short a time. OK so I can't keep up with the speed the emails arrive at, but, I can save them and get to them when I'm ready to move on. While I wouldn't dare call myself a "Musician" yet I can claim to be a future muso because I know I'll get there, eventually. Thanks for your help and great encouraging attitude.
Sincerely. David G. Hope. Adelaide, South Australia.

I'm just starting to play this now and I can't express how much I love playing this. This is not too hard for me. It's amazing how I can listen to a phrase and then replicate it perfectly. I now know that I'm really putting my listening skills to work.
Jane
You always make it look so easy!!! Thanks again, Jane

THANKS
Jack
I'm not sure if the problem is on my end or not but I barely hear the sound.
Rick
Hi Griff
Like the other replies, I have volume turned up but can hardly hear it, all the other videos have been fine.
Temple Weste
thanks, Griff, for putting all this together for us. just gotta get my callouses better for those great clean bends.
Aloha!
sal
Perfect example of how important it is to bend strings the right way. to get all that from 5 notes just goes to show it's not always about flying up and down the neck. I got so much out of this that I'll be playing at Madison Square Garden soon. But seriously, I think your a good teacher. you break things down very well. Maybe if the solo's were slowed down a bit, it might be a little easier to pick up. Good job
Russell Rhoades
Superb , just Superb , the ease of the method teaching and the lessons selected to teach.
the only think I could think of is to slow it down a little more some of the strings used in the lick
was hard to see, but after many replays i have it thank you Grill.
JACK RACZKA
Hi Griff, 0n the whole tone pinky bends ,can i us my third finger? It seems much easier for me.
tony
i call that the twelve bar blues shuffle . an like what every one else seems to experience is a very low output on the lesson needs volume. great lics but i wouldnt try to copy but create my own. S.R.V C.BERRY and alot of others use this . bye

Ed
Can barely hear the lesson, even with volume turned all the way up.
Randy Smith

harley

REJEAN FOURNIER

Robert LoRusso
Would love to slow it down very hard to keep up for me Need to incorporate a slow down feature on solos. Love everything else so far.

Wayne
I'm fixing to get into the BGU course. I've had it for a while but just haven't had time to get to it. I like your style of teaching. You are pretty thorough and pay attention to small details that make a big difference later. Some teachers don't realize there are 3 or 4 steps in their 1 step. So thanks for the help, hints and lessons
dennis richard
G riff, you have a lot of patience with us.but I tell you that these are the best lessons I have had that makes sense . Hard to believe I have just been playing chords and thats all, now you have helped me open up a whole new world. thank you Dennis
Dave Shephard
Griff: I have your Beginning Blues/BGU course and the Soloing w/o Scales course. All are excellent and so well done. It is so much fun to learn from you. Thanks for sharing your gift, talent and knowledge.
Graham Bowerbank
Good teaching method, consistent and clear. I really like playing the blues.
Santos Tijerina
Once again, you outdid yourself!! Now, it's fun to practice; actually learning something that other people will listen to and say,"WOW!!".

Hi Griff,
I enjoyed this lesson, but i couldn't find the backing track (by itself).

Pretty darn cool thats what I say

Just one word..... BRILLIANT !

Extremely cool. Ace guitar

The "Blues" are not simple. There are always new things to learn. It's about the small details in the way that the blues are performed that make it personal. The videos give me new ways to think about what I do and how I do it, thanks. I have been a blues writer for a long time and "voicing" the strings is always the carrot on the stick. I have 46 guitars, most I have built in my persuit of the tone and the bend. You can see my musical toys on facebook. If you actually read this I say again thanks for the videos. I am a retired Theratre Technical Director living on social security so I can't afford to buy your full sets of vids but I do appreciate what I get.
GP
Great Lesson....sadly, I could practice till the cows come home and not make the blues sound as good as you.
Ernst'r
I believe I have foudn the answer to all my anatomical maladies. This is pretty easy to grasp even though I only have four fingers ! Nice job !
kevin

Brilliant and I must congratulate you on the way in which the videos come over. You make everything so clear and therefore really enjoyable. Well done!

Hey Griff, I transposed the solo to the bass clef, and it is still sweet.
Great work baby, thanks

john Fogle
Nice, got that Bonamasa sound to it. Thanks!! I've been following and practicing all so far. This is just what I was after. Keep 'em coming. Like to see some blues spreads on the neck from key to key. Were heatin' 'em up for the summer Jams here in North Dakota.
Thanks Grif!!!
frank
Awesome, enjoyed it and love how you put it together. I will keep checking in from time to time as my schedule allows. Keep on picking and Thanks. Talk to you soon.
Rob Millard
Cool stuff Griff, you could fit this lick into many blues tunes with a bit of fine tweeking making it sound completely new each time, this free stuff is THE best, saving hard for the proper programme, keep strummin man.
brent owens
you should name your next series "Griff's Riffs" or "Riffs by Griff" or "Gettin Riffy with Griffy" or "Riffilization using Griffilization"
lmao awesome stuff you do here! I've learned a bunch!
Rod Abrahams
Hi Griff this is good stuff.looks like i have to buy another electric guitar as i got rid of mine a couple of years ago not imagining that jazz guitar could be so interesting to play.then i can look at getting your lessons
Dean
I got to tell you Griff, you have really taught me a lot just from your free stuff.
I love the blues solo! Man that is just too cool, and it does seem to be pretty simple. I am pretty new with the guitar. Just picked it up a couple of months ago, and signed up for your emails.
I just started trying to learn the solo today, and I can already hear that it is there once I get it memorized.
I haven't bought your dvd lessons, but I am going to have to! You make the lessons thru email so easy, I'm wondering what I'm missing and how much better I would be if I had your dvd lessons!
I'm buying as soon as I get my next paycheck!
Tony
Hey Griff,
Thanks for all the vids & help, but do you have any tuned in open D or G ?
Also, do you have any vids teaching Mississippi Blues ?
ONE MORE THING-
When are you going to make a video using THE most awesome Blues Guitar in the whole wide world - The Amazing 335- ???,, heheheh
razvan
How about the backing track? can we download it please?
thanks
Russ Martin
The great thing about learning a new lick.....it brings back the motor memory of a lick seldom used, or long forgotten. Live music is a form of self expression that has no equal. Its kind of like snowflakes....no two are alike. Your instructional package is professional, and a great tool for musicians at any level. You did good!!
David Munson
Thanks for these lessons. I've been playing for over 49 years, and still find new things to learn. Keep them coming,I love it.
Randy Barger
Thanks Griff I have really learned alot. I play on old Vintage Aria guitars. I was just wondering what is the name off the guitar you play in your video,s It looks like a Fender strat but I can see it doesn't say fender. I have a 1971 Electra strat with several upgrades, great sounding old Japanesse Guitar. I realize this is most likely a stupid question, but I keep trying to see the name on the headstock but can't. Thankyou for all you have taught me. If you go to youtube to learn something they play it so fast there is no way you can get it, also each teacher plays the same song totally different from the other, so thanks again I am really improving because off you and practice practice practice. Thanks man for what you do. Randy
garron lee
Your material is helping a lot.
Can you suggest an app I can use on a Droid phone to allow fluent viewing of your videos and blogs ?
Twobits
Greetings Griff,
Although I've been playing a while now I'm breaking out of my comfort zone and learning (thanks 2 you, Marty and others) new techs on guitar. I have two main goals. One is to feel comfortable playing with others and the other is to lay down lead guitar tracks on my origional songs - some dating back over 40 years and others as recent as last month. Thanks again for your help. Twobits from NYC
Robert
Hey Griff, great solo and pretty easy too, thanks so much for all the lessons you've sent over the past few weeks.I'm not what I would consider a great player (yet!!) but thanks to you and your buddy Marty Schwartz,I am making some diffinate improvements in my overall ability.
I'd like to also take advantage of this opportunity to wish YOU and YOURS the MERRIEST of CHRISTMAS'S and hope you have a prosperous 2011
John
Just like Jock (comment above) playing a long time, and still can't get that blues solo feel, but this is helping. I more or less have a problem with the 4 & 5 chord changes, soloing over them, and i would love to get the call and responce feel, and where to go and note for that.
thanks griff
john new jersey
Jock
Thanks for the music Griff. I have been playing for 42 years and it is good to see others helping others learn to play the guitar. Just a small idea that may help, there is a small program called, " ChordPulse ", easy to understand, place the chord and play along. This may also help to play the riff or riffs, maybe it will help. Have a Happy Holiday and All the Best to your Family in the coming year. Jock. Keep Smiling.
